I was exploring the Rocinha favela, one of the largest slums of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, when I heard the sound of kids playing echo through the maze of narrow, decrepit alleyways. I followed the noise until I reached a wall with this hole at the bottom, and a handful of children peeked through it the same moment I did. I gazed deeply into this child's eyes, and I saw his soul. His joy, optimism, and innocence beamed light through his dark, impoverished environment.
I was fortunate enough to have this photo published in the National Geographic Daily Dozen.
