Temple of Good Will, acclaimed by the people as one of the seven wonders of Brasília, is the most visited monument of the Brazilian capital, according to official data from the State Secretariat of Tourism of the Federal District (SETUR).

The colonial town of Pirenópolis was founded in 1727 by Portuguese searching for gold, easily found in the Rio das Almas river. From 1750 to 1800, four churches were built and Pirenópolis competed with Vila Boa (present day Cidade de Goiás) as the richest town in the province. After 1800, the gold boom subsided and part of the population emigrated. With changing commercial routes to Anápolis, the city became economically isolated. In 1890 the city changed its name from Meia Ponte ("Half bridge") to Pirenópolis, the city of the Pireneus, the nearby mountain chain. With the construction of Brasília, which is about 150 km away, an intensive exploitation of the "Pedra de Pirenópolis", a rustic quartzite stone used for walkways and interiors, began. Pirenópolis lives today mainly from tourism, especially from Brasília, as well as from cattle grazing in the surrounding pastures. The town has been restored artistically with its stone-paved streets and colonial houses (casarões).
