“Patriotism is proud of a country's virtues and eager to correct its deficiencies; it also acknowledges the legitimate patriotism of other countries, with their own specific virtues. The pride of nationalism, however, trumpets its country's virtues and denies its deficiencies, while it is contemptuous toward the virtues of other countries. It wants to be, and proclaims itself to be, "the greatest," but greatness is not required of a country; only goodness is.”

While cleaning my office today I found the 3 Little Pigs Finger Puppets I bought from this very nice lady a few years ago.
The memory of walking around the Ipanema Hippie Fair in Brazil crowded my mind and I had to dig up some old photos to reminisce. This HUGE fair is held every Sunday and has evolved into a major arts and crafts market, showing off the works of some of the city's best artisans. It was a truly wonderful place... very different from American Flea Markets. This place had character, culture, and unique handcrafted gifts made by very talented artists.
I traveled all over Brazil by myself and left with so many new friends.

U persuaded me to give a little talk on Brazil to her class. I made pão de queijo, showed them that in Portuguese a tilde goes over a vowel, wore white and brought flowers for Iemanjá, talked about New Year's Eve on the beach in Rio, and passed around a pile of books with pretty pictures.
Oh, yeah, and U made a mix CD of her favorite Brazilian tracks for every kid in the class. Think we could get into a Mac ad? Probably not, since we didn't buy them at the iTunes Store.
The books mostly came from the APL. I tried UT first, but despite having arguably the best Latin American library in the world, it is segregated in a non-circulating special collection. UT's main library has a total of about two dozen books on Brazil. It's madness. But one of them is the 1962 Life classic in the middle with the Rio shot I most needed.
This shot was taken from outside the window of my hotel. Didn't really have a lot of time to go out on a photo walk.

I went down and checked out the Olympic venue Mr Liz is working at. There was the most amazing Brazilian band playing. They were so wonderful!
This is one of their carnival dancers. I am SO jealous of her job.
Landscape captures how we see our world, our fragile home, so that each is a kind of nature portrait.
Sunsets represent the mystical moment, the glory that arises in the threshold of light and dark, day and night consciousness
I am exploring how personality, form, light, gesture, colour and composition express meanings.
I enjoy the personality of colour and the grace of form.
