The small lobby for the Apollo has a very Italodisco feel to it. Not the best picture to prove it, but then I was in a rush and didn't have the guts to barge through the doors, just take a picture and leave. Or explain in my poor (non-existant) Italian to them what I want. Next time I will.
I love the strange little hexagonal mirrors stuck to the booth, the bright green color, and the gold ironwork. Gold seems to be popular in Italian cinema interiors.
THE CORE is playing. Have a look at the interior on Apollo's own website. It's a stunning example of how green can in fact be tasteful (okay, in a retro environment). www.spaziocinema.info/sale/apollo/comera

Box office for the drive in movies. Closer view.
Apparently the drive in has been open since 1948 and has shown movies every year. The theater has one of the biggest screens in California at a 100ft. Admission is $5 per car up to six people per car.
Paducah, Kentucky's grand Columbia Theatre is a large, squared building on Broadway, just a few blocks from the Ohio River.
This Greek revival movie house was built in 1927, at the height of the era of the movie palace, and sat around 2000 people. Rather than just using a few Grecian architectural forms, this facade has a frieze of a chariot team at the roofline, classically-styled busts, Grecian urns, and temple-like pediments above some of the windows. The alabaster and blue terra cotta is unusual and quite beautiful.

American country music performer and actor Smiley Burnette (1911-1967) was known as Gene' Autrys plump, comic sidekick 'Ole Frog' Milhouse in over 60 Westerns. His trademarkd were his floppy black hat and his trick voice, imitating a deep, froglike croak. Smiley's career, beginning in 1934, spanned four decades.
Lester Alvin Burnett (he added the final 'e' later in life) was born in 1911 in Summum, Illinois, USA. He began singing as a child and played 100 instruments proficiently, and some simultaneously. Yet, he never learned to read or write music. After high school, Smiley worked in vaudeville. In 1929, he started to work at the state's first commercial radio station, WDZ-AM in Tuscola, Illinois. Burnette came by his nickname while creating a character for a WDZ children's program. He was reading Mark Twain's 'The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County' at the time, which included a character named Jim Smiley. He named the radio character Mr. Smiley and soon adopted the moniker as his own, dropping the title. Always interested in music, he was friends with Gene Autry. His break came in December 1933, when he was hired by Autry to play accordion on National Barn Dance on Chicago's WLS-AM, on which Autry was the major star. When Westerns became a big draw with the introduction of sound film, the studios were on the lookout for singing cowboys. In 1934, producer Nat Levine cast Autry and Burnette in their film debut (unbilled) as part of a bluegrass band in Mascot Pictures' In Old Santa Fe (David Howard, Joseph Kane, 1934)., starring Ken Maynard. Burnette sang and played accordion, and the film included two of his compositions. He had other small parts until a secondary, but more prominent role in the serial The Adventures of Rex and Rinty (1935). That same year, Levine gave Autry his first starring role in the 12-part serial The Phantom Empire (1935), with Burnette playing Oscar, a comic-relief role. Mascot was soon absorbed by Republic Pictures. Smiley became well known as Gene's plump sidekick Frog Milhouse in Republic's musical Westerns like Melody Trail (Joseph Kane, 1935), The Singing Vagabond (Carl Pierson, 1935) and Comin' 'Round the Mountain (Mack Wright, 1936). They worked together in over 80 Westerns. A part of his shtick was to talk and sing in a 'frog' voice, so his nickname became Ole Frog.
By 1940, Smiley Burnette ranked second only to Autry in a Boxoffice magazine popularity poll of Western stars, the lone sidekick among the top 10. Offscreen he earned a reputation as being moody and temperamental. When Autry left for World War II service, Burnette provided a sidekick to Eddie Dew, Sunset Carson, and Bob Livingston. He also appeared in nine other films with Roy Rogers. Burnette's film horse, white with a black-ringed left eye, also became famous, first as Black-eyed Nellie, then as Ring-eyed Nellie, and finally as just Ring Eye.Burnette also provided a lot of the music for his films as he wrote over 300 Western songs and sang quite a few in the films. After leaving Republic in June 1944, he became the sidekick to Charles Starrett at Columbia Pictures in the new Durango Kid series. Starrett and Burnette were paired in 56 films, from 1945 to 1952. When Starrett retired, Burnette was still under contract, so Columbia teamed him with Jock Mahoney for a new series of Westerns. A pilot film with Mahoney and Burnette was completed, but never released; Columbia then reassigned Burnette to its Gene Autry series, reuniting Burnette with his former partner. When the 'B' movie Western reign ended in 1953, Smiley retired from the screen. Burnette turned to broadcasting and made guest appearances on many country music radio and TV shows, including Louisiana Hayride, the Grand Ole Opry, and Ranch Party. Hollywood stars usually left their publicity and promotion to the studios that employed them, but Smiley Burnette took charge of his promotion personally. He was highly aware of his box-office value and shrewdly merchandised his name and likeness. He organized a national Smiley Burnette Fan Club, aimed mostly at the juvenile audience, and sold autographed photos and souvenirs to club members. He made additional money by making personal appearances at theatres showing his films. Burnette's base of operations was Springfield, Missouri, where he produced and hosted a nationally syndicated 15-minute radio program, The Smiley Burnette Show, through RadiOzark Enterprises. He also made regular appearances on ABC-TV's Ozark Jubilee (1959) from Springfield. He had his name legally changed to Smiley. In the 1960s he owned a drive-in restaurant chain called 'The Checkered Shirt'. His last performance was as railroad engineer Charlie Pratt on Petticoat Junction (1963-1967). Just after filming wrapped for the fourth season of Petticoat Junction, Burnette became ill. In 1967, Smiley Burnette died in Encino, Los Angeles, California of leukemia. He was married to Dallas McDonald. He and his wife adopted four children: Stephen Burnette, Linda Burnette, Brian Burnette and Carolyn Burnette.

I was a projectionist at this theater in the '80s working my way through college. Having Tim work here was kind of like reaching back into time. Working in movie theaters with only one or two screens meant you had a lot of time to hang out doing nothing. I spent a lot of it flirting with co-workers. I also hired all my friends.

The AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland -- a restored Art Deco movie palace operated by the American Film Institute.
The Stadium Theatre was built in the late '40s, and I'd guess it's on the tail end of Streamline Moderne. In fact, having just gotten a copy of Thomas Hine's "Populuxe", I might even say that this is on the border between Moderne and that sort of Populuxe style of the '50s and '60s.
The vertical lines on this facade are really striking, and the whole thing kind of looks like a giant radiator, or the grill of a car. I hadn't realized how cool it would be 'till I got there in person. I enjoyed seeing it almost as much as the Granada!
It looks like the building's current function is as a church.
