The Black Swan (Cygnus atratus) is a large waterbird, a species of swan, which breeds mainly in the southeast and southwest regions of Australia. The species was hunted to extinction in New Zealand, but later reintroduced. Within Australia they are nomadic, with erratic migration patterns dependent upon climatic conditions. Black Swans are large birds with mostly black plumage and red bills. They are monogamous breeders that share incubation duties and cygnet rearing between the sexes.
Described scientifically by English naturalist John Latham in 1790, the Black Swan was formerly placed into a monotypic genus, Chenopis. Black Swans can be found singly, or in loose companies numbering into the hundreds or even thousands. Black Swans are popular birds in zoological gardens and bird collections, and escapees are sometimes seen outside their natural range.

Even this Black Grouse must have been feeling the cold when he was standing on one leg. A little battle with one of his mates might have warmed him up but I guess he was conserving energy.
Not overly happy with these shots due to the light, but they are the first I have ever taken of this bird :-)

One of a pair. They have one youngster from last year, and had 5 cygnets this year - except that is down to two at the moment. Not sure what happens - whether the male kills them or if they get stolen?
I had been set up on the beach shooting shore birds when I caught a glimpse of a Black Skimmer fishing in the breaks of the waves. I was able to capture the moment when the bird feels a fish in its lower mandible and then contorts its head to get a better grip on the fish. It is just amazing on how this birds can fly in precise patterns regardless of their head position.
Please view large to see fur detail & whiskers etc :) Its suprisingly difficult to take a good photo of a completely black cat. I have been working on it for days & this is the best one I have taken so far.
Last month I was called out to TNR a black tomcat. An extremely nice cat loving couple had been feeding him for about a year but couldn't catch him. They were also feeding a female stray who showed up one day about ready to give birth.
I went over to visit the kittens today and was happy to see that all were doing fine. They will all be placed for adoption [ momma will be spayed when the kittens are weaned] and hopefully they will find purrrr..fect furever homes.
No need to comment. ( 1 of 4 pics)
Obama’s cavalcade of black vehicles had just entered the Ritz Moscow after midnight. The black ambulance was particularly ominous, but when I snapped a peak in the rear, the diaper preparedness seemed even more surreal… like the shear size of the security detail (dogs, metal detectors and a posse of about 1000 people).
