This is a shot of my room, as it is right now.

We've been without power for a few hours, and there's no telling when it'll be restored. If this is the worst that happens to us as a result of this monster storm, I'll count our blessings. There's already been so much destruction from this hurricane and it's expected to continue throughout the night into tomorrow.

I probably won't be on until power is restored, having to conserve my phone's battery.

Until then, stay happy, stay safe. and keep on shooting!

this weather here in BP totally drives me crazy!!!!

Taken a few very high contrast surfer shots lately, look great in black & white… agree?

Blackout:

(...) a moment in the theatre when the lights on stage are suddenly dimmed.(...) 2- a temporary loss of consciousness:

"she was suffering from blackouts"

I feel like I'm living a blackout episode in my life. When something hurts you so violently, that you're not able to feel anything anymore. You're just in shock.

I know I will recover from all of this. Soon or later.

Because no one ever, having a different color of the skin, a diffferent religion, a different belief, a different sexuality should be ever EXECUTED like George Floyd has been, whatever the reason of the arrest may be, just because being different.

Executed, yes, because that was a execution, a sentence to death with no process by a man who is supposed to serve and to protect.

STOP the violence.

Captured in: Gantry Plaza State Park, Long Island City, NY.

Pictured here is a sunset riverside view of a silhouetted Manhattan skyline, as seen from Gantry Plaza State Park.

I happened to be experimenting with different shots at sunset, and just happened to like the end result of this one. Certainly a much different look than my other shots from this series.

Not often where you get a look at NYC without any lights at all. I'd have to imagine this is similar to what it looked like at sunset during the Northeast blackout of 2003. Glad days like that are very few and far between!

Some quick info about the park itself:

Gantry Plaza State Park runs along the banks of New York's East River, and offers many beautiful views of the NYC skyline -- including the Empire State, Chrysler, and MetLife buildings, as well as the new WTC tower.

There are several 'Long Island' gantries found throughout the park, as this area was once a dock facility used to load and unload rail-car floats. The gantries were refurbished during the park's construction, and are now centerpieces of the area.

Railroad tracks once connected these floats to the Long Island Rail Road, and aided in the transport of shipments to and from various industries as far back as the mid-1920s.*

Severe storms caused blackouts to our area so we had to resort to candle power for about seven hours as the power lines were brought down by broken trees.

My daughter still managed to do her crosswords and Sudoku in the glimmering candlelight.

Thanks to all my Flickr friends who have Faved my last photo and to those who e-mailed me.

I am on antibiotics for the next 20days to make sure the tick bite is controlled.

My back problem, although not good, is slightly better as I am doing McKenzie exercises to strengthen my back and I am feeling some improvement. I am not allowed to bend or stretch or to stand still (shopping :-)....)

Gardening is out for the time being and I have had to employ someone to help out - this is not a happy situation for me as I am used to looking after my own home and garden.

I cannot stay on the computer for long so I will mark photos from my Flickr friends to show I have seen their work and appreciate it. Please bear with me.

I took this photo on November 15, 2022, during the first massive missile strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. That was when the first prolonged blackout hit Ukraine — and Kyiv in particular. The city was plunged into total darkness. Along with the electricity, mobile connection, water supply, and heating also disappeared.

I had a large wax candle that I’d once bought from some beekeepers at a fair. During those blackouts, I finally put it to use. Sitting by that candle, I got into making alcohol burners out of empty cola cans — I made quite a few of them and later gave them away to my family and friends.

Back then, we were told: “We just need to endure this winter — by spring, Russia will run out of cruise missiles (experts estimated they had around 300 at the time), and the war will be over."

Three years have passed since then...

The war goes on. Just yesterday, Russia carried out another attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. It took only a dozen drones and several ballistic missiles for the Russians to disable two city thermal power plants and plunge the entire Left Bank of Kyiv (and part of the Right Bank) into a total blackout. They also knocked out several other thermal and hydroelectric power stations supplying other Ukrainian cities.

It seems that this winter in Kyiv and across Ukraine will be terrible — without water, without light, without heat.

My country is being systematically turned into a land unfit for life. The war has turned into the slow destruction of Ukraine and its people.

Dead star shine

Light up the sky

I'm all out of breath

My walls are closing in

Days go by

Give me a sign

Come back to the end

The shepherd of the damned

I can feel you falling away

No longer the lost

No longer the same

And I can see you starting to break

I'll keep you alive

If you show me the way

Forever - and ever

the scars will remain

I'm falling apart

Leave me here forever in the dark

Daylight dies

Blackout the sky

Does anyone care?

Is anybody there?

Take this life

Empty inside

I'm already dead

I'll rise to fall again

I can feel you falling away♫

For September's Monthly Scavenger Hunt.

Blackout, the practice of minimizing outdoor lighting for protection from attack. I don't think any enemy aircraft will be able to spot me!

I'm working this weekend (boo!) but then got all of next week off (yey!) so hopefully I'll have more time to spend on my photos.

And I've just found out my photostream has been marked as unsafe!!! If the person who raised a complaint would like to point me in the direction of what they found offensive I'd like it to be pointed out! In the meantime, sorry if you can't see my photos.

no photos today. the camera is down. we must rise above all of this. we are one all of us.

This was taken near my house the night of the 2011 San Diego and Southern California blackout.

When my dad and I got the idea to walk down to the bay, it was beyond weird and ominous. I ran back to the house to grab my camera and just took a quick picture. It's impossible to give it justice.

The lights in this photo are mainly the emergency lights and a few buildings had some generators but mostly downtown was dark.
