Day 3 at 2018 NA LCS Regional Qualifiers in Los Angeles, California, USA on 16 September 2018.

We threw a birthday party for the family. Among the treats was this wonderful chocolate-date cake covered with strawberries and blueberries.

I managed to snap one off before it disappeared.

High in the mountain they waited for picking fingers and watering mouth to spray their taste of wonder.

Blab!

By Michael Vance

Its press release claims that BLAB! is "the preeminent anthology of the graphic design and illustration arts." It also claims that this coffee-table edition showcases fine art, illustration and comix featuring a diverse jumble of counterculture [i.e. liberal] artists.

In other words, most of the art looks like your worst nightmare after you've dropped acid. It intentionally warps reality.

That statement isn't criticism, but an observation of intent. Even art that attempts to accurately duplicate reality fails to do so.

So BLAB! is a collection of one- to eight-page vignettes focusing on abstract, comics-based art with only a taste of prose. If you prefer art over counter-cultural comment, and art that is post-modernistic, surrealistic, cubistic or "just-splatters-of-color-istic," this is the time for you to jump up and down for joy.

But if you are really expecting a coffee-table anthology of fine art, you'll be disappointed. Instead of the artistic children of Picasso, Dali, Monet and artists who live on contemporary museum walls, you'll find the close cousins of Zap and other underground "hippie" comics from the 1960s.

There is no comment here on BLAB! dialogue, plot, characterization or storytelling because there is too little to critique. Still, if you don't mind nudity and profanity, BLAB! is recommended for adults.

MINIVIEW: Femforce: Claws of the She-Cat [AC Comics]. This is standard superhero fare depending on action and glimpses of female nudity to attract male readers.

Both art and story will remind older readers of comic books from the ‘40s, ‘50s, and ‘60s.

Gratefully, a prose summary of She-Cat’s history makes it easy for new readers to enter her continuity begun twenty years ago.

The endurance of this and other AC Comic titles is an astonishing feat and a testimony to their entertainment value for a dedicated niche audience.

The sheen starts to show. These are some of the most beautiful colors and effects I ever obtained since I started calligraphy.

Yeah, things were taken away.

SO! Yeah, I feel like talking/writing about my day. Yay! So, you can stop reading now if you're not interested, haha. SOOO, during lunch I became one of those "library kids" (no offense) which was actually really nice. A lot nicer than being a T.A. for the library, haha. And oh, man how that place is a mess with out me. But yeah! I liked it. I FINALLY began reading Paper Towns! AAAAHH, and soon I will own it! Cause geez, for some reason I really want to read it. Even though I felt kinda silly reading a "teenager book" (no offense). Even though I heard it was a lot more than just that. AND diushriuewhr! Sorry, haha! Excited noises. Well, at least it wasn't like... yeah I don't want to say what cause then I know I would offend butt loads of people (coughtwilightcough). But yeah! I liked it, although I only read 15 pages. BUT! One of the characters really bothered me. Meh. AND! Maybe I'm just a little creeper but yeah! I really like (this probably is going to come out wrong) observing people? I don't know how else to put it with out me sounding weird. Yeah! I do it a lot. It's actually kinda bad though. Cause then I'm one of those kids who laugh at jokes some one said to their friends across the room. Sorry I don't mean to eavesdrop. I really don't. But I find it so darn interesting how other people interact with their friends and such. Yeah, like I always wonder what certain groups of friends talk about and how it differs from what my friends and I talk about. Like... yeah! Really interests me. So, today I "observed" (yes, you are zoo animals, haha) a group of guys playing cards. It was funny. They talked about video games and their rates and scores and all this other mumbo jumbo. It was nice. Yeah, okay. Um, I think I'm done ranting. Alright day I guess. Incredibly boring :(

And then tomorrow

and Friday.

I already talked about harsha (harsha ) in my last post a few months ago, so I won’t blab again (Here is the Link for my last post about this bread). I frequently turn to this stuffed harsha when there is no bread to serve with Harira or any type of soups for supper. This is a classic harsha recipe that lends itself to endless possibility and variation. I like to use cheese cream with coriander, but you can use any herbs or soft cheese that suit your preference, and you can use either fresh or buttermilk powder. It really tastes great when warm, a perfect blend of soft and crunchy texture, and I think it is the buttermilk that makes this harsha deliciously moist, giving it loads of flavour. It was soft and crusty with a lovely mild flavour, compared to a nice sourdough-ish taste, segueing into hot metlted cheese and olives mixture, cooked to a perfect melding of flavors. I just have to exercise great self-control to stop at ONE harsha. I'm submitting this post to Susan's Yeastspotting, a blog devoted to yeast bread. Please check it out!

Benefit Thursday greetings, my collector friends! The editions I've been blabbing about all week long (and then some) are finally here and I'm super excited to introduce them. I'm also nervous... I've been thinking about Penelope Umbrico's work a lot, for a long time and I am a huge fan of the Aperture Foundation. I'm counting on all of you collectors to help us support them in a big way!

Without futher ado, I present to you: 87 Suns From Flickr - 29 Visible and 79 Moons From Flickr - 51 Visible. All profits from the sale of the Moons print will be donated to Aperture. Penelope created these prints exclusively for the Aperture/20x200 collaboration, using her brilliant Suns from Flickr as the foundation for the final images. She picked a great place to start: the Suns project has many ties to Aperture itself, and it's also the genesis of my ongoing and public fascination with her images.

My first encounter with Suns was its stunning installation at The Ubiquitous Image exhibition, curated by Aperture Books Publisher — and HHS! panelistLesley Martin. The show was part of last year's inaugural New York Photo Festival, where Penelope also did an artist's talk that blew me away. Her process, her humor and her fresh perspective captivated me; she sees the internet as a vast repository of source material and does ingenious things with its plenty. Her perspective transcends the confines of art and internet culture, moving beyond each discipline's tendency to be hopelessly self-referential. Being someone who dwells in both worlds and works hard to unite them, the discovery of Penelope's point of view was downright thrilling.*

I feel incredibly fortunate to be writing this newsletter today. To be presenting the work of someone who inspired me from a stage, in support of a foundation which advances the medium about which I am most passionate is truly an honor. I am so grateful to artists like Penelope and organizations like Aperture for the important work that they do — the role of artists and what they create is grossly undervalued in contemporary culture.

Aperture plays a vital role in advancing the medium of photography, which I consider to be the most crucial medium of our time. They produce gorgeous books, mount ambitious exhibitions and publish a terrific magazine. They support emerging artists and collectors via their competitions and limited-edition print programs, and their offices are populated by some of the hardest working, most thoughtful and passionate people I've met.

Most recently, they've been focused on putting together The Edge of Vision: Abstraction in Contemporary Photography, curated by Lyle Rexer. The exhibition features work from a fascinating array of photographers, including Ms. Umbrico herself. Aperture's hosting an opening reception this Saturday, May 16th, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. and the show is on view through July 9th.

I've already mentioned that Penelope's got a lot of good things to say; tomorrow's your chance to hear them firsthand. In conjunction with the show, Lyle Rexer will be moderating a panel at NYPH'09 with Penelope and two other participating artists, Jack Sal and Silvio Wolfe, at 5:00 p.m. on Friday in DUMBO at St. Ann's Warehouse.

Not in New York this summer? Snatch up your prints and bring a little abstraction to your neck of the woods. Be sure to add Aperture's book that accompanies the exhibition to your wish list as well — it'll be available later this month! We got a sneak peek and it is indeed a beautiful book.

There's a lot of other gorgeousness to be found on Aperture's site, but don't take our word for it. As an added incentive to get you to go see for yourselves, Aperture's offering an additional 10% off already discounted books when 20x200 collectors shop at www.aperture.org. Use Coupon Code UMBR59 during checkout to receive this exclusive discount on some of the best photography books available today.**

*I was tempted to insert what feels like an obligatory aside here about my utter sincerity in spite of what might seem to be an excessive use of superlatives, but I'm putting it down here instead. Trust me, I am this excited, engaged, impressed.

**Offer expires May 31, 2009. Discount does not apply to Curated Collection, signed, and limited-edition books.
