Bending a length of pipe for use in one of the pieces of rail equipment being repaired or restored at the Niles Canyon Railway maintenance yard near Sunol, California.

The Colorado River started to cut through endless layers of rock, and when it ran into Horseshoe Bend, it creates this natural, sculptural landscape. The river eventually went around it, and now there is a 270-degree bend in the river which created the now-famous horseshoe shape. The sheer Cliff walls are made of Navajo Sandstone, a particularly dense type of sandstone. In the process of erosion, the sandstone acted as a natural barrier, forcing the water to make a sharp bend in the river thorough softer rocks.

from the archives, as evidence for my friend Anja, I was there.

... in the Snake River. Long exposure in the early early morning light. This was very much the blue hour, but warmed this up a little with the White Balance. It was one glorious morning there in the Grand Tetons, and hope to return there again some day(s).

Maybe many days :)))

Bending an iron bar to fit an old piece of railway equipment at the Niles Canyon Railway maintenance facility near Sunol, California.

Vrbas river, Bosnia, autumn view of the river bend, the horizon seems uneven, but that's an illusion, it looks like this in just about every photo I've seen online. I was worried that this spot would be covered in fog, because I was driving through thick fog until 5 minutes before I arrived at the viewpoint. This seems to be a morning spot, it was too shadowy when I passed by the previous afternoon. Many more river bend photos to come this time, from other rivers and countries. Happy belated Thanksgiving to USAians.

Long exposure in the early morning at Oxbow Bend.

It’s been brought to my attention that this also looks like Dead Horse Point in Utah. This is an older photo that I had on a laptop and I think it’s Horseshoe Bend, but not positive! I should research more before posting.

Oxbow Bend is an overlook along highway 89/191 between Jackson Lake Junction and Moran Junction.

An oxbow is a crescent-shaped section of river lying alongside a flowing, winding river. The oxbow is created over time as erosion and deposits of soil change the river's course.

Oxbow Bend is home to a variety of birds and animals, including pelicans, Great Blue Herons, muskrats, otters, moose, and bear. On calm days, Mount Moran can be seen reflected on the surface of the water. Oxbow Bend is a popular area to view sunrise or sunset, and is visited by photographers hoping to capture the river and Teton Range.

Because, sometimes you need two torches.

Round The Bend, Castle Stalker

Have a nice weekend :-)

A section of Horseshoe Bend near Page AZ during sunset. I really liked the way the clouds were reflected in the Colorado River. If you look closely you can see a few people taking pictures on the edge of the canyon. The really give a sense of scale to this awesome place.

I call this s-curve in the Spaulding Drain of the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge the "Heron Bend". When the light and sky are right, it makes for a compelling look, as taken on July 22, 2023.

This is the sky and reflection in the wider view that the beaver in the previous post came swimming through.

Two trees seem to bend away from the sun.

This is a mediocre shot of Oxbow Bend in the Teton National Park. I love it, but plan to go pack and try it again! I am hoping for a day when there are more clouds in the sky and the water is calmer for a perfect reflection.

Formed when the Colorado River looped around an impassable sandstone escarpment, Horseshoe Bend is one of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area's more famous highlights. Not an easy feat, considering nearby is Antelope Canyon and the second-largest manmade lake in the United States, Lake Powell.
