The list of works by architect James Miller includes in 1936 "Broadcasting House, additions, Queen Margaret Drive, Kelvinside, Glasgow".
"Additions" may refer to the block in the centre, pared down classicism, the pediments tying it into the original mansion, North Park House, to the left. The link to the old house is quite neat, as is the keystone element above the top row of windows. To the right is the medical building added in 1895 by John Keppie with Charles Rennie MackIntosh when North Park House was the Queen Margaret College for woman. A brick BBC extension from the 1960s has been demolished.

This photo of a Presto disc-cutting machine in a BBC recording channel at Bush House was taken on August 16th 1962. It was popularly believed that some of our Prestos came over under the wartime lend-lease system whereby America helped Britain during the Second World War, prior to its own involvement after Pearl Harbour - I don't know for sure whether this is true.
The cutter head can be seen to the right of the central spindle, moving along a lead screw. The crank handle on the right end of this is turned to increase the speed at which the head moves across the disk, for scrolls between items and the run-out at the end. The microscope is for examining the gooves to adust the depth of cut. The tube running from above the head and to the right sucks the swarf (off-cut) away and into a safe bin (it was highly inflammable).

I was demo.ing kit at the BBC R&M Radio Festival when an old lady pointed at this device. "Young man, can you tell me what this is?" I didn't have a clue. I'd never seen it before.
As I floundered it transpired that she had brought it in herself and just plonked it on the side next to all of the DAB radios, Blackberries, iPods etc. It is a 1922 radio set. It had originally belonged to her grandparents.
You tune by moving the slider pin from left to right across the copper coil. An aerial is attached to the left and earphones on the right. Reception was improved by placing it in a large bowl!
