BBC History Manager and former continuity announcer John Escolme writes about how he fulfilled his dream of 'Announcing Christmas' over on the About the BBC Blog.
An illegal radio receiver built to pick up foreign broadcasts. After May 1943 most Dutch people were supposed to hand in their radios to the Germans. The only exceptions were members of the Dutch nazi party. So some people built radios like this one out of spare parts. This one has been built into a matchbox. People who handed in their radios were given a receipt by the Germans so that after the Germans had won the war they could present their receipt and get their radio back. That was the theory.
This photostream has been created as supporting material for a documentary called " Ottringham Calling " first broadcast on BBC Radio Humberside at Christmas 2013. This photostream is not however operated by the BBC.
You can now hear the programme via the internet. Go to soundcloud dot com and put "BBC Ottringham " into the searchbox. Look for a black and white picture of a German confiscating radios.
Je kunt nu het hele programma via internet beluisteren. Ga naar soundcloud punt com en zet "BBC Ottringham " in de zoekbox.

Rare Red weather warning issued by the MET Office on BBC Weather this was broadcast when winds reached 100mph in the majority of the UK which was subject to the remains of a hurricane.
Some areas would see 1 month's rain in the next couple of days. The fact flooding on the River Severn and Thames had flooded many places before this with storm after storm.
In the days when children might have to watch an imported film in the original language on TV, with just an announcer telling us the story in English as the programme went along.
Another keyboard shot: the iconic (to me at least!) BBC keyboard with its distinctive red function keys.
The DualOS Master Board from RetroClinic replaces the original 1Mbit ROM on the BBC Master 128. It contains 2 versions of the Master MOS, the original 3.20 that most machines come with, and the later MOS 3.50, with all the later versions of the utilities.
A switchable MOS gives the best of both worlds for compatibility. As was the case with the B+, and the Master when it first came out, because of changes to the OS code, software that accesses the operating system directly did not like the changes, and either ran badly, or crashed completely. This is still the case with the MOS 3.50. If you use only the later version, some of the games and utilities you used to enjoy and use will not work any more. Having both in your machine, available at the flick of a switch, gives you the most flexibility.
Both versions of the MOS have been correctly patched for the Y2K bug, so the year displays correctly from 1980 to 2079 - essential if some software was not written to be Y2K compliant, and you need to back the year off to make it run. Also, the DFS in MOS 3.50 has been patched to correct several bugs, and allow double density formatting under the DFS with the correct system calls. Add to that, the ADFSs on both versions of the operating system have been patched to use the Compact Flash Hard Drive.

Antiques are sometimes a family affair. When the BBC came to Lytham in June there were visitors of all ages queuing up for a selfie with Fiona Bruce et al. This guy has his hands full though. So does the girl. At a guess we’re witnessing at least three generations here. There’s no valuation up for broadcast yet, but I’m guessing the little chap’s more likely to be asleep when all is revealed on the Antiques Roadshow.
