Hummingbirds are New World birds that constitute the family Trochilidae. They are among the smallest of birds, most species measuring in the 7.5–13 cm (3–5 in) range. Indeed, the smallest extant bird species is a hummingbird, the 5-cm bee hummingbird, weighing less than a U.S. penny (2.5 g).

They are known as hummingbirds because of the humming sound created by their beating wings which flap at high frequencies audible to humans. They hover in mid-air at rapid wing-flapping rates, typically around 50 times per second, allowing them also to fly at speeds exceeding 15 m/s (54 km/h; 34 mph),[1] backwards.[2]

As everywhere in the world caring for the young ones is a kind of instinct for most animals and human beings. To watch the lioness with her three cubs was really a joy for me. The young ones were playing, took a pause, walked away from their mother, were running around. The lioness waited, turned around, walked backwards and at the end they disappeared together into the bushes.

I wish you all a wonderful Christmas time.

The day I fancied pulling in this ancient monument it was totally clouded over and a car and a minibus or campervan were already parked in the small layby. It was so dull that we drove a little further and turned back the way we came. Both vehicles were just pulling out so we parked up and nipped over the style for a quick look but the lighting was as flat as a pancake and we went back to the car. When crossing a style I have a tendency to descend backwards so saw this partial rainbow and in those few moments the clouds had bunched up and there was a bit of blue ( just enough to make a sailor a collar ) as my mother used to say :)

I couldn't believe it honestly and don't think I ever moved faster pulling a camera from its hiding place I practically flew back over that style. Now if you knew me at all you would know that is NOT how I usually move lol..

Hand held and I suppose not particularly special but that rainbow only came out for me at this particular time I'm sure.. Later the same day I got more rainbows and also soaked to the skin but I was as excited as a child with this very short lived partial rainbow in this special place.....

You can see the structure from the road if you stand on the roof of your car and peer over the hedgerows, but it’s well worth the two-minute walk to experience it firsthand. In the field, a large flat stone, or quoit weighing around 12 tons, rest on top of three upright stones. The dolmen was constructed around 2500 BC as part of a barrow, or chambered tomb, the remains of which are barely visible in the surrounding landscape today. Lanyon means “cold pool” in the native Cornish language. The site is also known as “The Giant’s Table,” for obvious reasons, and has been mentioned in Arthurian legends.

Originally, the dolmen was much higher, perhaps tall enough to accommodate a horse and rider beneath it. However, after a storm in 1815, the ancient structure collapsed. In the course of the 1824 reconstruction by locals, one of the supports broke. With only three uprights remaining, the quoit was lowered about five feet and rotated ninety degrees from its original orientation. Today it’s barely five feet from ground to ceiling.

The surrounding moors are windy and beautiful in themselves, and the spot is perfect for a respite on the drive from St Ives to Penzance.

I love purple and gold together. I’m sorry about not replying to your faves and comments. I do appreciate each and every one of my positive feedback. I am nursing my entire rib cage, so I’m going to try to take it easy for a few days. Thanks so much for your kindness and understanding. A fave is a nice thing along with a comment. May I suggest that y’all stay veritical and don’t trip backwards into o solid oak night stand. 😭

In surprise the teacher stops and stares at the wondrous scenery in front of him - a ridiculous Kabedon, performed by a carrothead and some blushy schoolboy. Next to them was a white hair boy humping a banana pillow while two girls watch the entire scene with laughter. "These kids today...", the teacher murmurs to himself and shakes his head. With determined steps he adjusts his glasses. Sunlight reflects from it and enlightens the hallway for a shear moment.

"Excuse me!", he raises his voice and crosses the arms in front of his chest. "What are you thinking you are doing here?! Show some respect! This is a school after all!"

The kids turn at each other and then glance the teacher, without even a slight attempt to change their posture or interrupt their little - whatever this was. Only the white haired boy stopped humping the Banana. Instead he decided to go for the teachers leg.

"What the...."

"We are taking a picture.", interrupts the carrothead.

"A what?", asks the teacher with anger in his voice.

"A picture! And actually this isn't even a school", the white haired girl says.

"It's just a backdrop ... also you aren't even a real teacher.", continues the other girl.

"Yeah, right. And I am a Nanny!", answers the teacher with sarcasm.

"Actually you are.", replies the blue haired boy with a smile.

"W-what?", the teacher stumbles backwards in disbelief. Those kids were crazy!

"It's true.", says the orange haired boy. "And actually none of this ever happened. It's just the description of a picture."

I thought this was an undershot mill wheel, but my husband thinks it is an overshot mistakenly put in backwards during the restoration. The creek is located about 20 feet below the wheel.

Three Southern Railway GP50’s wheel a southbound manifest through Faber, Virginia. Although GP50’s had been around for close to two years, they did not sell in the northeast, and this was my first encounter with one.

The Temple Island in Henley-On-Thames is a beautiful little spot tucked away amongst the more exalted bustle of the Henley Regatta. I first caught wind of this place a few years ago when I had been a spectator at the Henley Regatta. Although I wanted to take some shots, there were not a lot of cloud cover to make it worth my while.

As a landscape photographer, everyone would nod their heads in unison that whilst sunny weather is preferred, all sun with little clouds does not really make for some compelling viewing especially at dusk.

So I went back thinking I should be here on other day when the clouds would play ball. Thing is you do not need too much of wind either or your reflection would be shot. So in all, there are a lot of factors that need to come together to get a good photograph of a place. There wasn't much of a wind blowing although there were a lot of boats going backwards and forwards which leaves a big wake every now and then. So you have to time the shot in between such instances.

In all, it was a decent evening's work at the temple island. Midsummer is a good time to be here with the sun setting adjacent to this location.

Where do these huge birds live?

How may they taste?

Why does neigbours tomcat walk backwards if I try to give him a kiss?

Would he love me if I present him such a bird?

Female White-crowned sparrow observes setting sun. Or not. But she's watching something from her perch in fir tree. I love these pretty sparrows.

“White-crowned Sparrows hop across the ground and through low foliage in brushy habitats. You may see them “double-scratching,” a move they share with towhees involving a quick hop backwards to turn over leaves followed by a forward hop and pounce.”

A Common Blue Damselfly on a tall grass stem. It was quite breezy and the stalk was blowing backwards and forwards, so I got my wife to hold the top of the stem as steady as she could while I attempted to get a shot.

100 Photos of Places That I love to Take Photographs.. In Southern New Jersey:

Lake Lenape, Mays Landing, New Jersey. (Atlantic County). USA.

_________________

On my way home earlier I stopped to take a few quick photos at the Lake. It was pretty windy, which made it chilly- so I had to make it quick... but I did manage to get a few photos that I really liked. (This being one of them).

This photo makes me think about life.

> So many different paths, different directions to take.. But no matter which one, they all come from the same place (the ground) & lead to the same place (reaching for the sky).

Some break off, and you will have to go backwards in order to go forwards in a different direction.. Just like life.

But regardless, we all come into the world the same way & ultimately after our long unique journey.. we all must deal with the very end at some point.

Just some thoughts..

A koa’e ‘ula spots fish, stops and hovers in mid-air, then plunges into the water for the catch. Tropicbirds are superb aerial acrobats and underwater swimmers. Their aerial courtship displays over the ocean are fascinating to watch. One of the few birds that can fly backwards. The red-tailed tropicbird is one of only three species of tropicbirds worldwide and identified by the red bill and distinctive long, red, central tail streamers. Surely among the most beautiful of all the seabirds! Koa’e ‘ula, red-tailed tropicbird, Phaethon rubricauda.

Nose to nose, two Norfolk Southern C39-8’s pull a northbound freight through Teel, Virginia. Some may think that this is neat, but the sight of a non-first-generation long hood first leader holds no appeal for me.

This Arctic Skua reminded me of the conductor of an orchestra. He had been bathing in a fresh water pool and was just flapping himself dry. This photo also shows the white wing flashes and deep barrel chest characteristic of this species. In summer they don't catch their own food like most seabirds, but mug other seabirds for food they are carrying back in their crops. When chased panicking seabirds will regurgitate their last meal and the skua will gather it all in mid air with astonishing dexterity. I photographed this one on St Kilda where I had another encounter with a breeding Arctic Skua. When I walked high on the hill one Skua called at me to signal its displeasure as it had a chick somewhere nearby. I didn't want to disturb it so headed back down and as soon as I turned my back I felt a rush of air as it divebombed me. This one wouldn't attack while I was watching so I then had to walk backwards out of its territory. But one bird on Svalbard wasn't so timid and physically struck me as I was taking a photograph of it charging me. Here's the photo just before impact: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/9459817588/in/photolist

One final thing; Skuas have webbed feet like most seabirds but there is an optical illusion going on here that makes the feet look unwebbed. That is because the webs were almost submerged, but the "middle toe" is a reflection of the leg making the toes look normal.

Looking back and enjoying the pleasure still of my favourite place.

Taken from behind my favourite chalets.and nothing really but that simple view is imprinted on my brain. i don't usually look backwards but occasionally find I missed the essence of a place that was there all along...and what's more it will still be there unchanged next year...Happy Holidays dear friends... Sue xx
