2011/04/23.RD6056. B.R. Standard class 7 Pacific 70000 BRITANNIA catches the last rays of the setting sun at Cholsey, one station to the east of Didcot. It was working the return leg of the Stratford upon Avon to London Paddington 'Cathedrals Express' and there was a 20 minute pathing stop here.
BRITANNIA is seen running in a plain, unlined, black livery and without nameplates, just as she would have looked when she first emergerged from Crewe Works in 1951.

A York bound D.M.U. awaits departure time at Manchester Victoria whilst another D.M.U. waits on the right hand side of the platfrom.

Shipley Bingley Junction signal box. The signal has come of for a D.M.U. Shipley station had a triangular layout with platforms on all three sides.
Trains could depart in three directions: Skipton, Leeds or Ilkley. The D.M.U. moves of in the Skipton direction.

My very first week on shifts after training was on nights and on freight trains from Sighthill Goods Yard Glasgow to Perth Yard, the trains were either 'unfitted' or 'partialy fitted' to use railway parlance to describe the braking available on the wagons.
In both circumstances a Brake Van was provided on the rear of the train to assist with the Brake Force.
It was my job to look back to see two of these lamps, one each side, of the Brake Van to prove the train was complete, both on departure and during the journey.
The lamp has two lenses with the WHITE showing to the front and the RED to the rear.
The RED lens is a seperate attatchment carried in a seperate slot.
This was because if the train was in a loop or slow/relief line the red lens had to be removed from the side nearest the main line so as not to be misread by a driver of a pasiing train. They could also be removed if the train was making a propelling movement over a long distance (Tail Light removed) to appear white as frontal lighting should be.
If there was a problem with the train the Guard could reverse the lamps to show Red towards loco to attract the Drvers attention.
