After a few days shooting the ocean I feel slightly more comfortable with a lens pointed towards the water. I had been years since I was on a beach. Maybe five? Maybe more. And now that I'm back, I find myself missing it. Or at least understanding better how people miss it. Maybe it's awakened the Unquiet of Ulmo. Maybe.

One of the unique things about winter is that you frequently go to bed with the world looking one way and awaken to it looking completely different. All it takes is the right kind of snowfall to create a pure, white frosting on everything. We had the wonderfully unique combination of both fresh snow and a mild temperature yesterday. If only winter were always like this... This is my first share from the brand new Canon EF-M 18-150mm IS STM kit lens that has started to ship with the new Canon EOS M5. This is the 24'th portrait piece (Noémie Merlant inspired) of my SHADOWS series where face features are created and accentuated by deleting parts of a shaded area. Actual lines are only used around the "eye area".

Once more Lake Michigan has been awakened from her slumber. The results are "awesome" in the original sense of the word.
The photos in this trio were taken mid-morning (Thursday).
Sometimes the memories
Are wrapped in a haze.
Little points of color,
the touch of your fingertips
or the scent of your kiss.
Enough to tease the edges,
But not enough to fill it all in.
Then I awaken and reach for you, finding you in everyday magic until I can hear your voice and we find the corners of our world wrapped in each others arms.
Here is to more adventures.
ღHappy Valentine's Day!ღ

The monstrous Wisteria has awaken, still not a bloom on this vine but if not pruned back will over take the back in one summer.

gradually, our snow melted. and now the earth awakens. this process rouses us all; rouses our spirits and our curiosity. hibernation is over. let the dance party begin.
[11:52, on the ground]
i wear a purple string around my wrist. it reminds me of my intention from a recent meditation retreat. the intention comes from words spoken by the teacher: “if not now, when?” if i don’t practice mindfulness now, when? if i don’t practice compassion now, when? if i don’t inhabit my life now, when?
my ordinary front yard, in its autumn-morning beauty, reminds me to awaken. now. with kindness and love.

28/365
After yesterday's failed attempt, I tried again, and today I went in prepared with exactly what I wanted to shoot. I still had a different idea, but I like how this turned out. Sometimes these things take a life of their own, maybe for a reason, maybe by chance, but nevertheless...
Almost 1 month of 365...
The early morning sun slithers through the trees to gently awaken a deserted barn that really doesn't need waking up for anything particular. As we enter the last couple of decades of our lives, we often think what time we get up is of no importance. But there is a strong correlation between starting the day off early and having a motivating purpose in life, something we all need.

Out of the 5 years of scouting and shooting the California hills, this morning was by far the most epic. The conditions I had dreamt about all came together for this magical morning consisting of green hills, high clouds, and low fog blanketing the hills. First, the show began with a 360 degree full sky burn followed by first light on the fog. After sunrise the fog slowly began to lift and lowered itself within the bumps and grooves of the hills, creating this scene with the hills moving in and out of the fog. It was a morning worth remembering!
Black Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park, CO
Went out with a bang for my final day of summer break and went all the way to Black Lake for sunrise. At the beginning of the summer, I set a goal to get here for sunrise by the time I headed back to work. I arrived at the trailhead at 2:45 and was on the trail by 3. I am used to doing about a mile or so to get to a location, but this one is 5 miles. Hiking 2 hours in the pitch black mountains is one of the most exhilarating things I've ever done. When the sun finally rises, all that adrenaline turns to joy. I also love the fact that I was the first soul out there. A couple climbers came hiking past me as I was waiting for the light, but other than that, I didn't see anyone else until I started heading back. Then, the park really began to awaken with visitors. This image really conveys the way I felt being out there in the quiet solitude before the summer crowds arrived.
It's back to work and the start of a new school year tomorrow. I must say I had a successful 2 months of getting out and shooting. I learned a lot and progressed to a new level with my photography. I've also learned that predicting weather and light in the mountains is incredibly hard. Lots of learning from failures this summer too. Looking forward to some weekend backpacking trips coming up before the leaves begin to change.
Hawaii's weather was awful for the past week or so and didn't have anything new to post yet but here is my final comp from the fog event on Black Friday. This is at the very top of Hawk Hill and the Sun rises right between the two towers of the GGB. I really don't like shooting directly into the sun but seeing the Sun rises and illuminates the fog is really a pretty sight .
Northern lights over the village of Hamnoy. It would still have to be the most spectacular thing I have ever witnessed.
