Just off Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia, between Point Addis and Anglesea is a spectacular, but hazardous, 5 km section of cliffed coast and energetic beaches. The cliffs are composed of weathered sandstone that continually slumps and, in places, falls onto the beaches. The three beaches face south-south-east and receive waves averaging 1.5 m which, beside producing wide, energetic surf, help to erode the base of the cliffs and bluffs. Access to these beaches is not recommended owing to rock falls. The first beach (Black Rocks Beach) extends 1 km from Point Addis to Black Rocks. It can be reached via a walking track from the Point Addis car park. It usually has a single bar, cut by permanent rips against each headland, and two central rips. The backing bluffs are fairly subdued, reaching only 30 m. Eumeralla Beach is 2.2 km long and backed by massive slumps in its 90 m high bluffs. The beach sand is coarser, resulting in a surf zone dominated by rips every 300 m. Demons Bluff, as the name suggests, is a sheer, 30 to 50 m high, eroding cliff, fronted by a narrow, 1.5 km long beach that is awash at high tide. Rock falls commonly cover parts of the beach, which can only be reached on foot along the base of the cliffs. The beach has a wide surf zone, dominated by rips every 300 m. The Anglesea sewer works back the beach. (sourced from Beachsafe)

This was taken on an overcast morning, the sun came out to illuminate the cliff faces just for a few very brief moments.

Tōkyō Station (Japanese: 東京駅) is a major railway station in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan. The original station is located in Chiyoda's Marunouchi business district near the Imperial Palace grounds. The newer Eastern extension is not far from the Ginza commercial district. Due to the large area covered by the station, it is divided into the Marunouchi (west) and Yaesu (east) sides in its directional signage.

The station opened in 1914 as an integrated terminus for the present-day Tōkaidō Line, Tōhoku Line, and later the Chūō Line, which previously had separate termini in Tokyo. Since then, it has served as the main terminus for inter-city trains departing Tokyo westwards. The station was badly damaged during the Bombing of Tokyo on 25 May 1945 but soon resumed service. The Tōkaidō Shinkansen, the world’s first dedicated high-speed rail system, opened between the station and Osaka in 1964. With the extension of northbound Shinkansen lines from Ueno in 1991, the station also became a gateway to northeast Japan.

Served by the high-speed rail lines of the Shinkansen network, Tōkyō Station is the main inter-city rail terminal in Tokyo. It is the busiest station in Japan in terms of scheduled trains, with more than 4,000 trains arriving and departing daily, and the fifth-busiest in eastern Japan in terms of passenger throughput; on average, more than 500,000 people use Tōkyō Station every day. The station is also served by many regional commuter lines of Japan Railways, as well as the Tokyo Metro network.

The bottlenose dolphin weighs an average of 300 kg (660 lb), but can range from 150 and 650 kg (330 and 1,430 lb). It can reach a length of just over 4 m (13 ft).

Its colour varies considerably, is usually dark gray on the back and lighter gray on the flanks, but it can be bluish-grey, brownish-grey, or even nearly black, and is often darker on the back from the rostrum to behind the dorsal fin. This is called countershading and is a form of camouflage. Older dolphins sometimes have a few spots.

Bottlenose dolphins can live for more than 40 years. Females typically live 5–10 years longer than males, with some females exceeding 60 years. This extreme age is rare and less than 2% of all Bottlenose dolphins will live longer than 60 years. Bottlenose dolphins can jump to a height of 6 metres (20 feet) in the air.

This image was taken near Tazacorte on the Island of La Palma in the Canary Islands.

It was intersting to see a Remora (Sucker Fish) on its body, which may explain why ithe Dolphin was breaching out of the water to try to dislodge it from its body.

While some of the relationships between remoras and hosts, such as Sharks, Turtles, Manta Rays and Dolphins, are mutualistic, it is believed that dolphins with remoras attached do not benefit from the relationship.

The attachment of the remora increases the dolphin's drag, which increases the energy needed for swimming. The remora is also thought to irritate the skin of the dolphin, hence they may breach to dislodge them.

Grand Canyon National Park

South Rim

Arizona, USA

I'm always amazed at how the Grand Canyon can look so different with the season, time of day and cloud cover.

The Grand Canyon was formed over 5 to 6 million of years by the erosion caused by the Colorado River. Many visitors are surprised with the cool rim temperatures, but with the South Rim at an elevation ranging to over 7,000 feet, winter snow averages about 60 inches a year. The North Rim elevation is about 1,000 feet higher and receives an average of 144 inches of snow a year and is closed from mid-autumn to mid-spring.

The photo was taken during the afternoon with the warmer light of a late autumn day. I am often amazed at just how much the light difference from season of the year, time of day and the clouds influence the colors viewed from any location within the park.

The canyon is more than 200 miles long 12 miles wide and a mile deep. The national park is visited by about 6 million people a year. On a clear day, like this one, it is possible to see for 100 miles and the distance across to the North Rim seems to shrink.

There are always visitors at the South Rim of the park, but during the winter season, it is possible to find overlooks with few or no other visitors. One can find a sense of serenity when viewing a scene like this especially when viewing it alone.

On a sad note, while millions of visitors respect the beauty of the work of Mother Nature, on this trip, we saw that a few felt compelled to use markers on some of the safety walls and leave behind messages, initials, etc.

03-November-2023

It happens on average every 15 years, now around 20, that the south-westerly wind blows strong and prolonged into the Gulf of Trieste coming from northern Romagna.

The gulf is very windy, but there are also long periods of calm, but no wind, even the strongest one, Bora, can create high waves, given that within this stretch of sea the maximum distances between the coasts are around 30km.

The only exception is provided by the wind that comes from the south-west in the wind rose and enters the only opening towards the rest of the Adriatic between the Grado peninsula (FVG, Italia) and tip/rt Savudrija (Istra, Hrvatska).

Through this passage the wind fishes on approximately 250km of sea surface and manages to generate waves of up to 3/4m (sea force 4/5 on the Douglas scale) which are decidedly important values for the area.

This is what happened on Friday 3 November 2023, due to a strong Atlantic front generated by the extratropical storm called "Ciaran" to which a strong high tide was added, flooding the adjacent State Road 14 (viale Miramare) in the Barcola section and where wood, branches, porphyry cubes, concrete blocks dragged for meters and metres, algae, sea stones'n'gravel and seafood were found.

The road surface is approximately 6m above the sea level.

The photos were taken in reportage style, so point and shoot without paying too much attention to the composition and limiting the image quality to have a quick shot with very short times.

The purpose is not that of likes, obviously, but to document an event which for those who know these little waves areas was very significant.

The precedents of the last 70 years are very few (1957, 1969, 1984 and 2003) and each time the seafront and the popular bathing establishments have been strengthened so, from the significant damage that occurred, it can be argued that it could have been the strongest storm ever or, at least, among the strongest for this area.

The average June temperature on Khodovarikha is 3 degrees Celsius.

Landmark

I could not believe my eyes when I saw this goatsbeard (Tragopogon dubius or western salsify) plant growing on our acreage! I love experimenting with the seedheads!!

Tragopogon dubius (western salsify, western goat's-beard, wild oysterplant, yellow salsify, yellow goat's beard, goat's beard, goatsbeard, common salsify, salsify) [...] has been introduced into North America where it has become widespread, being reported from all the continental United States except for a few in the far south-east, and all provinces of Canada except Newfoundland and the northern territories.

Like most salsifies, the Western Salsify grows as an annual or occasionally biennial forb, reaching a height of typically 20-60 cm but sometimes almost a metre. It grows typically in warm, sheltered spots with moist soil. Its yellow flower is 4-6 cm in diameter and is likely to be seen in late spring or early summer. The flowers open early in the morning and often close up by late afternoon. Later the plant forms a seed head that resembles that of the dandelions but is distinctly larger. The seeds themselves (known as achenes) are 2-4 cm long but featherweight, weighing about 8 mg each on average. [...]

Above average heat today ahead of a very blustery southerly buster tonight ... made for some very photogenic storms cells off Wollongong today.

Have a great weekend folks.

On average March is the 6th wettest month of the year for the Ucluelet/West Coast area with around 346mm (13.5 in ) of rain making it a very wet time to visit. This rainfall is typically spread over 19 days, although this varies considerably year to year. Yesterday alone the rainfall was 4.7mm ( 0.18 in ). With many days of rain in previous days adding to the accumulation, there were waterfalls falling from any cliff or mountainside. There is always the good side of very heavy rainfall, the falls were so amazing to see covering the hills as we drove around exploring.

Seems like its been forever since I uploaded anything. We have been caught up in the worst heat wave and drought since 1895 here in Oklahoma. The average daytime temp for the month of July in Okla. was well over 100 degrees, the hottest ever. Shot this last November just after a light freezing rain, wouldn't that feel good about now. Its better on black if you have the time. Thanks for stopping by and have a great week!

"Snow Moon"

February 15, 2022

Seeing was below average and the wind was gusty from the SE making imaging a little complicated. I managed to capture four videos (two of the eastern 2/3rds of the Moon, two of the western 2/3rds) to create a two-frame stitch of tonight's nearly full Moon. I played with my 80mm f/6 refractor telescope and my ZWO ASI 224MC video camera (with UV-IR block filter). This was mostly a chance to test color capture settings with this camera and filter combination.

Here is what I got from my South Huntsville neighborhood.

Locally, the time of the Full Moon is about noon on the 16th. Clear skies, y'all!

BNSF 7921 leads a southbound vehicle train through Colorado Springs, CO.

I don't catch many SB autoracks, but I see my fair share of NB racks. Those NB vehicle trains typically run 1x1, so I was happy to see this one running with the power up front.

Heading into April 2016, traffic on the Joint Line has been down ~70% with the line seeing an average of 10-12 trains per day. But on this particular morning, I saw 5 trains in a 4-hour window making it feel a little like the "classic" Joint Line...

Landscape of Tibet

Tibet is the highest country on earth with an average elevation of over 4000m. The lowest regions of Tibet are still over 2000m above sea level with Jomo Langma (Everest,Sagarmatha) ཇོ་མོ་གླང་མ being the highest point at 8848m. Tibet is covered in grasslands, mountains and valleys.

Many of Asia’s largest rivers have their headwaters in Tibet such as the Ma chu རྨ་ཆུ་ ( Yellow River), Dri chu འབྲི་ཆུ་ (Yangtze), Nag chu ནག་ཆུ་ - རྒྱ་མོ་རྔུལ་ཆུ (Salween), Yarlung Tsangpo ཡར་ཀླུངས་གཙང་པོ་ (Brahmaputra) and Dza chu རྫ་ཆུ་ (Mekong). Western Tibet (Ngari) is a high, arid region with few people, while southeast Tibet (Kham) is forested and suitable for farming. Northern Tibet (Amdo) is covered in vast grasslands filled with yaks and sheep and central Tibet (U-Tsang) is the most densely populated area of Tibet lying along the fertile Yarlung Valley.

The North Sea averages about 100 m. The beaches and coastal waters of the North Sea are popular destinations for tourists. The Dutch coasts are especially developed for tourism. Windsurfing and sailing are popular sports because of the winds. Because of the strong tides and areas of still water, the North Sea is more difficult to sail than the Baltic or the Mediterranean. Mudflat hiking, recreational fishing, and diving, including wreck diving, are all possible.

The climatic conditions on the North Sea coast are thought to be especially healthful. As early as the 19th century travellers used their stays on the North Sea coast as curative and restorative vacations . The sea air, temperature, wind, water, and sunshine are counted among the beneficial conditions that are said to activate the body's defences, improve circulation, strengthen the immune system, and have healing effects on the skin ;-)

I was lucky to catch this boy and girl running into the North sea during sunset at 22:00 with a sea surface temperature around 18.5 ˚C. It must have been romantic and

so refreshing for them ;-)

The Hopewell Rocks are located in New Brunswick, Canada, within one hour of the nearest airport in Moncton, N.B.

An UNESCO site, the Hopewell Rocks, also called the Flowerpots Rocks or simply The Rocks, are rock formations caused by tidal erosion in The Hopewell Rocks Ocean Tidal Exploration Site in New Brunswick. Carved by melting glaciers, then sculpted by the world's highest and most artistic tides, these stacks stand 40–70 feet tall. They are located on the shores of the upper reaches of the Bay of Fundy at Hopewell Cape near Moncton.

Due to the extreme tidal range of the Bay of Fundy, the base of the formations are covered in water twice a day. The formations consist of dark sedimentary conglomerate and sandstone rock. The large volume of water flowing in to and out of the Bay of Fundy modifies the landscape surrounding it. Each day 160 billion tonnes of seawater flows in and out of the Bay of Fundy during one tide cycle, more than the combined flow of the world’s freshwater rivers! After the retreat of the glaciers in the region following the last ice age, surface water filtering through cracks in the cliff has eroded and separated the formations from the rest of the cliff face. Meanwhile, advancing and retreating tides and the associated waves have eroded the base of the rocks at a faster rate than the tops, resulting in their unusual shapes.

Because the Fundy Bay is funnel-shaped - wide and deep at one end and shallow at the other, tides are pushed increasingly higher as they move up the Bay. By the time they reach "The Rocks" they are over four stories high! Although the tides vary from day to day, the high tide can be as high as 16 metres (52ft) and an average of 10.7 metres (35ft), giving the Hopewell Rocks one of the highest average tides in the world.

We only had barely over an hour's time there because the tide was coming in very fast. Luckily the light was reasonably good.

From the National Park Service website, Hoodoos are tall skinny spires of rock that protrude from the bottom of arid basins and "broken" lands. Hoodoos are most commonly found in the High Plateaus region of the Colorado Plateau and in the Badlands regions of the Northern Great Plains. While hoodoos are scattered throughout these areas, nowhere in the world are they as abundant as in the northern section of Bryce Canyon National Park. In common usage, the difference between Hoodoos and pinnacles or spires is that hoodoos have a variable thickness often described as having a "totem pole-shaped body." A spire, on the other hand, has a smoother profile or uniform thickness that tapers from the ground upward. At Bryce Canyon, hoodoos range in size from that of an average human to heights exceeding a 10-story building. Formed in sedimentary rock, hoodoo shapes are affected by the erosional patterns of alternating hard and softer rock layers. (www.nps.gov/brca/learn/nature/hoodoos.htm)

I love to go to movies. In a theatre with a crowd. The crowd is optional, but prefered...

I probably average one a week during the course of a year.

A FEW RANDOM THOUGHTS AND WORTHLESS OPINIONS...

I hate arriving late for a movie. If the show is about to start... be prepared to see something else or buy tickets for the next showing. "I'm very anal about this". The last time I walked into a darkened theatre was the final installment of "Star Wars". This was only because I had already seen it... I like to have my popcorn and be seated before the coming attractions... "coming attractions" ARE a part of the movie experience. Commercials, on the other hand, suck.

Jodie Foster is the only movie star who's films I go to just because she's in them.

Russell Crow is my favorite actor. I am still miffed that he did not win the Oscar for "A Beautiful Mind". A film which won "Best Picture", "Best Director", "Best S. Actress", and "Best Writing". All for a movie in which every scene surrounds his character. losing to Denzel Washington(a very good performance) in "Training Day"(an ok film)... so wrong.

... that said. I do think Halle Berry was brilliant in "Monster's Ball". The last ten minutes alone were worthy of an Oscar nomination. She had very little dialogue during this part of the film. The emotions were conveyed in her facial expressions and body language. "Simply amazing"

"As Good As It Gets" is that rare movie where I leave the theatre wishing the characters would just keep going... the only film since then to bring out this response in me was "Friends With Money". A movie for which I have yet to lend to anyone who liked it.

UP 1986 and 2196 had the Friday edition of LTA42 well in hand, finally rolling east through Winona after shoving out onto the CP at Tower CK about a mile west of this location. While nothing more than a pretty average wedge, this image does a good job showing off my favorite crossing from my hometown of Winona, MN.

Located a handful of blocks from my parents house, this four way intersection of South Baker and 7th street is split at a 45 degree angle by the Canadian Pacific River Subdivision. The sound of the 3 off timed mechanical bells that were mounted to 3 of the 4 cantilever type crossing gates at this intersection (All since replaced) will forever be ingrained in my head from over 20 years of watching trains pass through town.

Shot at night I chose the spot meter to the lamp at zone 7 and lightened the shadows in development to achieve a better exposure instead of using matrix or averaging modes.

The start of an average day in a medieval farming village, as the farmers go off to work in the fields...

My second entry into the CCC this year for the Village Life category. This build took almost a month to finish, which is considerably longer than I was expecting. I would also like to say thanks to all the builders that helped me out with WIPs while I was working on this, and especially to The Maestro for his help with the corner of the tudor building and inspiration for fence and wheat techniques.

Many thanks for the visits, faves and comments. Cheers

Comb-creasted Jacana

Scientific Name: Irediparra gallinacea

Description: The Comb-crested Jacana, also known as the Lotusbird, has a red fleshy forehead comb, a black crown, back and breast and brown wings. The belly, face and throat are white, and there is a faint yellow tinge around the eye and throat. Both sexes are similar in appearance, but the female is larger than the male, and slightly brighter in colour. In flight, the long legs and toes trail behind the body. Young Jacanas resemble the adult birds, but are rufous to black on the head and nape, and have a rufous-black breast band. The red fleshy comb is much smaller and darker.

Distribution: Comb-crested Jacanas occupy coastal and sub-coastal regions from the Kimberleys, Western Australia, through northern Australia to about Grafton, New South Wales. They are more common in the north of their range. The species also occurs in New Guinea, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Habitat: Comb-crested Jacanas are found in tropical and subtropical freshwater wetlands, including lagoons, billabongs, swamps, lakes, rivers, sewage ponds and dams, providing there is adequate floating vegetation.

Seasonal movements: Comb-crested Jacanas will move to new locations, particularly in response to changes in their current habitat, such as droughts or excessive flooding.

Feeding: The Comb-crested Jacana feeds on aquatic insects, which it seizes from floating vegetation or the surface of the water. It also feeds on seeds and aquatic plants. Birds rarely come to shore. When searching for food, the Comb-crested Jacana bobs its head and flicks its tailed continuously.

Breeding: The female Comb-crested Jacana may mate with several males, while the male alone builds the nest, incubates the eggs and cares for the young. If danger threatens the young birds, the male has the curious habit of picking the chicks up under his wings and carrying them off to safety.

Minimum Size: 20cm

Maximum Size: 23cm

Average size: 21cm

Breeding season: September to May (later in the north than in the east)

The fortified evangelical church of Cincșor was built in the 14th century.

The settlement was first documented in 1377 in the papal tax lists (Rudbertus de Parvo Promotorio), the second mention being in 1434 when it appeared under the name of "Kyssenk". During the following centuries, Cincșor became a real bastion on the route of the Olt on the path of the migratory peoples, the Turks and the Tatars. The fortified church dates from this first period.

The church with a tower to the west was erected between 1421 and 1427 and dedicated to the "holy apostles Peter and Paul". In the middle of the 15th century, the first enclosure was erected and a defense floor was added above the choir. The fortified church of Cincșor is one of the best preserved churches in Transylvania, the changes that have taken place over the centuries are minimal.

The church organ was brought by Samuel Matz Birthalm and is dated 1805. The Cincșor organ is one of the most famous church organs in Transylvania. In the bell tower, there are two bells, a large one dating from 1937 and an average dating from 1644.

The famous Transylvanian painter Carl Dörschlag painted the current altar in 1868. The old altar of the triptych is located in the country's museum in Făgăraș

In 2011, the village community of Saxon origin had only 22 inhabitants.
