Not liked by the average person but some species of blow fly can help forensic scientise pin down the time of death of a body by looking at the size of the maggots. Some species can live for several months or even a year if overwintering. Here you can see the extended mouth part called the pseudo trachea and at the end what looks a bit like a mop is a device that consist of many tubes. Through these tubes the fly will gulp its stomach contents over the food to help digest and turn the food into a liquid to be swallowed up. Which reminds me where did I put my last large slice of Victoria Sponge as I'm very hungry now !

This goldfinch looks very glad to see the sun, since we only average about 7 such nice days of sunny weather in January.

It was a gray day in Winneshiek County with some scattered sprinkles since the temperatures topped 40 F, a full ten degrees above average. This downy woodpecker was doubtless pleased to get a break from February's bone-chilling cold.

Znaczącym zabytkiem jest Basilica San Vincente upamiętniająca św. Wincentego z Saragossy. Słynie ona z niezwykłego grobowca umieszczonego pod baldachimem w orientalnym stylu.

Was reading some articles on low hanging fruit to reduce CO2 emissions and its crazy to me that we still allow flaring - the burning of natural gas as a waste product during oil development. Surprisingly on average 1% of gas produced across the US is flared – amounting to 1 billion cubic feet per day (Bcfd) in 2018. At $2 per thousand cfd, this amounts to a wasted $2 million per day, as well as a significant increase in GHG emissions. With all that money on the table you'd think someone would have cracked this nut by now. I took this photo over a decade ago in western Colorado and have taken ones similar in Texas just in the past year.

It is undoubtedly the place that most identifies Tenerife. The Teide National Park was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2007 with the category of Natural Asset. It is also a European Diploma by the Council of Europe and is part of the Natura 2000 Network Places. And there is no lack of reasons for receiving such recognitions. On the one hand, it is the most complete example of supra-Mediterranean vegetation that exists. On the other, it constitutes one of the most spectacular manifestations of volcanism in the world, and of course, the most prominent in the Canary Islands.

The P.N. del Teide is located in the center of the island, at an average altitude of 2,000 meters, and its top represents the highest peak in Spain, at 3,718 meters. Its record figures also include that it is the most visited national park in Spain and Europe, receiving about three million tourists a year.

From the geomorphological point of view we are facing a wonder of nature. The structure of the caldera and the Teide-Pico-Viejo stratovolcano are unique on the planet. Although its value is not there. The hundreds of cones, flows or caves that it has enrich its scientific and landscape interest. Added to this is its wealth of fauna and flora, with a large number of Canarian endemic species and species exclusive to the park.

The park was created in 1954 in recognition of its volcanic and biological uniqueness. Its extension is almost 19,000 hectares, which makes it the largest and oldest of all the national parks of the Canary Islands. It has a Peripheral Protection Zone, and is surrounded by the Corona Forestal Natural Park, which with 46,612.9 hectares of extension, is the largest protected natural area in the entire Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands.

The Calapooia (cala - POO - ya) River is an 80-mile (130 km) tributary of the Willamette River in the state of Oregon. The Calapooia was named for the Kalapuya (also spelled Calapooia), a tribe of Native Americans.

The McKercher Park to Brownsville section of the Calapooia River is 7 miles long and is, according to American Whitewater, a class I section of whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Oregon tend to be more challenging than the national average, so don't forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable.

One of the largest muroids, it is a brown or grey rodent with a body up to 25 cm (10 in) long, and a similar tail length; the male weighs on average 350 g (12 oz) and the female 250 g (9 oz). Thought to have originated in northern China, this rodent has now spread to all continents except Antarctica, and is the dominant rat in Europe and much of North America—making it by at least this particular definition the most successful mammal on the planet after humans.[2] With rare exceptions, the brown rat lives wherever humans live, particularly in urban areas.

Especially effective You can visit that at this place, the Rhein Falls from Schaffhausen. On average 373 cubic meters of water are falling down the rocks per second. On the maximum in 1965 it were 1250 cubic meters per second. That makes that waterfall to one of the three largest in europe.

A few weeks ago I was out on a walk when I came across this wonderful froth of white cherry blossoms, tinged with a touch of pink on an old tree in the front garden of a grand Edwardian villa. The sunlight cascading through them made for a delightful half hour of happily photographing them. Due to quite a lot of cloud that day, I had to be patient and wait for the sun to appear and highlight them. The results I think, were well worth the wait.

Melbourne has experienced a colder and wetter than average winter this year, which is now bleeding well and truly into a wetter and greyer than average spring, however on the rare sunny days we are currently getting, the showing of flowers and blossoms is beautiful.

White stork (Ciconia ciconia)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_stork

The white stork (Ciconia ciconia) is a large bird in the stork family, Ciconiidae. Its plumage is mainly white, with black on the bird's wings. Adults have long red legs and long pointed red beaks, and measure on average 100–115 cm (39–45 in) from beak tip to end of tail, with a 155–215 cm (61–85 in) wingspan.

It was taken on the northwestern edge of Spitsbergen, in the Svalbard archipelago, not far from the receding snout of the Aavatsmarkbreen glacier — a place where the Arctic breathes in whispers and fractures. The date was late August, the season of deceptive warmth when the midnight sun hovers low and the ice begins to bleed.

The formation in the photograph is not solid rock, as some might think at first glance, but the collapsed mouth of a subglacial tunnel, formed by meltwater carving through the glacier’s underbelly. Years of pressure and refreezing sculpted those contoured ridges — layers of ancient snowfall compressed into dense, cerulean ice. The faint cyan glow inside the cave isn’t artificial; it’s scattered light refracting through air bubbles trapped millennia ago when mammoths still roamed the Siberian steppe.

The air inside smells faintly metallic, like cold iron and salt. It’s utterly still, except for the slow, rhythmic crack of thawing ice — a sound like distant gunfire, echoing across the bay. On calm days, the sea around the ice gate mirrors the sky in a sheet of mercury grey. On others, the wind funnels through the arch, producing a low hum, as if the glacier itself were exhaling.

Scientists who mapped this region in 2023 used drones to capture melt patterns here. They found that the ice retreated 37 meters in just two years — a rate almost double that of the previous decade. Beneath this particular overhang, water temperatures measured 1.4°C above the long-term average, enough to weaken the internal structure. Within a few seasons, this cathedral of ice will collapse into the fjord and drift into oblivion, another silent casualty of warming currents from the West Spitsbergen Current, which brings Atlantic heat ever closer to the pole.

The island nation of Iceland sits at the juncture where the 2 giant tectonic plates, the Eurasian plate and the North American plate, meet. This long exposure photograph shows a small waterfall that flows over the North American plate in the background, onto the Eurasian plate below in the foreground.

Although most of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is located underwater, portions of it extend above sea level, as shown here.

The section of the ridge that includes the island of Iceland is also known as the Reykjanes Ridge. The ridge has an average spreading rate of about 2.5 cm per year.

White Rock is an oceanfront city in British Columbia, Canada, and a member municipality of Metro Vancouver.

White Rock has a moderate climate, with average daily high temperatures of 23 degrees Celsius in summer and 6 degrees Celsius in winter.

White Rock is named for a distinctive large white boulder on its beach near the promenade, a glacial erratic that migrated south during the last glaciation. The 486-ton granite boulder was kept white by shellfish-eating seabirds whose guano covered the rock, so much so that 19th-century sailors used it as a beacon. However, it is now kept white through monthly applications of white paint by the city parks department, and has been a popular graffiti target for over thirty years.

Legend.

The large, white rock is mentioned in the legends of the local Coast Salish peoples. One legend says that the white rock marks the landing spot of a stone that was hurled across the Strait of Georgia by a young chief It was said that he and his bride would move from Vancouver Island to wherever the rock landed to make a home together.

but nonetheless we wanted to find and photograph an Osprey

(Well why make it easy!?!)

And somehow we did!

Light wasn't the best., no fish or aerobatics., We know this shot isn't going to 'wow' you

(And we hope they'll be better ones to come)

But none of that really matters

What does matter (to us) it's our first Osprey the year

Lots of freshly emerged bees today like this one. Look closely at the eye and you can see some damage where it was attacked before it was ready to fly. 18-march-2022: the perpetual alternation between low and high tide, more marked precisely in this area where the tidal masses are channeled along the entire narrow Adriatic Sea, has greater variation in conjunction with the days around the full moon and the new moon.

It is therefore an astronomical phenomenon, but that Weather Patterns can alter, even massively.

In "my area", for most of the winter and with a peak in March, there were numerous extreme low tides and minimal high tides, this due to the over 1040hpas of adiabatic pressure and the continuous currents prevailing from the East or North-East.

So, every +1hpas over the terrestrial average pressure (gravity) value of 1013hpas corresponds to 1cm less in the level of that sea placed under the adiabatic pressure of the anticyclone and obviously vice versa in case of decreasing pressure.

The north-eastern currents tend to move the water masses towards the West and then towards the South following the anti-clockwise current that goes up the Adriatic along the Dalmatian coast and descends it from the Italian side.

All these factors "empty" the Gulf of Trieste which is also the Northernmost Spot of the entire Mediterranean Sea!

The exact opposite occurs with Low Pressure and the activation of persistent "long currents" from the South or South/East, in which cases not only Venice ends up under the surface of the Northern Adriatic Sea.

This vintage Catapiller sits on display at the Guy Goodwin Education Center in Carrizo Plain national Monument, San Luis Obispo County, California. Cattle were brought to the grasslands of the Carrizo Plain by the early 1850s. The next big change came when dryland grain farmers started homesteading in the valley. Eventually vast amounts of the grassland was put to the plow. The farm work was orignally all done with horse drawn euipment but eventually tractors like this one did the heavy work. The Carrizo Plain gets only 8 to 10 inches of rainfall a year on average but the amount during any given year can be highly unpredictable. The risk of crop failure due to insufficient moisture became to great and most of the farming efforts were abandoned. In the last few decades many of the homesteads were bought and became part of the National Monument which is administered by the BLM.

This scene is actually not that unusual in the Midwest however. With modern agriculture, farm sizes are much larger than the 80 acre sections most farms were setup on in the early part of the 1900's.Most farms had one to three sections(80-240 acres),now the average size is over 450 acres....

Immediately west of Delicate Arch, there is this natural amphitheater known as a "panhole", set in an area of sweeping mesas with rich red-to-orange colored sandstone. This view here, looking to the South, was itself worth the 1.5 mile hike up to the most famous arch in the park. Note the distant sand dunes in the upper left background. To get some idea of how immense this basin is, find the intrepid photographer in the bright teal shirt mid-left in the frame of the photo. In order to get his shot of Delicate Arch to the left of this photo, he's standing near the edge of a cliff...

Arches National Park contains the highest density of arches in the world, more than 2000 natural sandstone arches. It also features a variety of unique geological formations such as Balanced Rock, The Three Gossips and The Tower of Babel. It borders the Colorado River on the Colorado Plateau and is 4 miles north of Moab, Utah. It’s truly high desert, receiving an average of less than 10 inches (250 mm) of rain annually. In spite of it’s relatively remote location the park received more than 1.6 million visitors in 2018 and the lines to get in can be long…so get there early!
