this is the twelfth image in a series titled "get back to the country", with the title coming affectionately from neil young's song.
i grew up in rural indiana, and though i've chosen to live an urban lifestyle now, as you know the steady decline in rural areas is something i document from time to time. i do this because it gives me a healthy break from my usual urban street photography, and also because i feel the plight of rural america is worthy of documentation.
in rural americana, nearly every small town has at least one, if not several, auto repair shops. when i grew up in the 1950's and '60's, the small mom and pop gas stations usually reserved one of their two bays for auto repair work. the mechanic wore many hats, pumping gas at pennies a gallon for customers, washing windshields, and checking the oil, in addition to actually working on the cars. i remember a mechanic at the gas station one block from our home. his hands were covered in black grease always. i don't think they ever came clean. he was covered in grease from head to toe, everyday. i wouldn't have recognized him clean.
nowadays, the auto repair shops struggle to stay in business, and many don't survive for long. the auto repair shops are part of the fabric of rural america, but getting back to the country might mean your car or truck repair comes with a surprise or two.

On our trips north to Rockingham County, every time Dona and I go by this empty red building, we say we need to stop and take a picture. Finally, remembering where the entrance to the place was, we drove up the hill and parked. No sooner had we parked then a car drove up to us from the opposite direction. It was a charming, elderly black couple wanting to know if we were the owners of the building. It seems they were very active in their church and the church was looking to rent a place where they could perhaps sell things like a thrift store and use the other half as maybe an auto repair shop. They were quite elegant looking in their pristine eighties era Cadillac. I regret I did not ask to take their pictures. They were really a cute couple.
