When I stopped for a red light I saw this old 1970 Ford Galaxie peeking out amongst all the newbies in the parking lot of an auto repair shop. Looked to be in decent condition.

A notable business on 54th Avenue N, St. Pete. It’s run by Elzie Mahoney, a devout Christian. One St. Pete friend who runs a ‘64 Chevy gives Honest Mahoney a good mention. A neat ‘39 Plymouth shows off its streamlined profile.

For years this was a busy auto and truck repair shop; it closed some time ago and has been slowly falling into ruin ever since. Colonie, New York.

In 2022, when the photograph was taken, the building housed an automobile repair shop. The building painted and decked out to resemble a Texaco gas station did not have gas pumps.

At the junction of Nevada highways 6 & 379 we came across some abandoned buildings and a camper. One large, open building had been a tire and auto repair shop with quite a few beautiful, funky, photogenic remnants inside. It proved to be another great place to stop and shoot during our one-day wall-to-wall drive across Nevada.

I admire my brother and his passion for mechanics and electronics. If it weren’t for his irresponsible older brother and the unfavorable environment during his youth, he would today be a top-class specialist.

Right now, he’s putting the Triumph Speed Triple engine back together after the pistons were damaged—they seized up during a faster ride on the road. It might have been a factory defect or the wrong oil. He is self-taught, and the hundreds of hours he has spent in a garage turned into a workshop have allowed him to get to know his motorcycle down to the smallest screw.

Adolphsen Real Estate exists within a large stately mansion on an alignment of old US Route 99, and it is connected to Barry's Quality Machine shop. I imagine this used to be a service station with gasoline pumps when Market Street was the old 99. That these are conjoined by such an ersatz-lookin' lean-to makes this one of the most uniquely sprawly commercial additions I've ever seen.

There are three apartments upstairs in the house.

Maryhill Washington. Population 98. The town was conceived as a planned community at the turn of the 20th century by a Quaker named Sam Hill. He built the first paved roads in Washington state.

In 1918 in Maryhill, Sam Hill began buiding a replica of Stonehenge, which overlooks the Columbia River, as a tribute to local fallen soldiers during WWI.

Later most of the town burned and never recovered. Maryhill now consists of a few interesting old buildings, a few orchards and several trailer homes.

The town is situated at the eastern end of the Columbia Gorge (just outside of the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area) and it's setting is breathtaking.

When most people think of Washington State, they think of Seattle, rain, Puget Sound, Mt. Rainier and tall trees. But Maryhill is on the dry side (east) of the Cascade Mountains, where it rarely rains. Sagebrush and short grass dominate the landscape as well as one of the worlds largest rivers, the Columbia.

During our 10-day roadtrip at the junction of Nevada highways 6 & 379 near Currant Mtn we came across some abandoned buildings and a camper. This was another great place to stop and shoot in this expansive, beautiful desert state. With so many good photo ops, it was a long (but enjoyable) drive going wall-to-wall in one day.

The job has to be done.

Small auto repair shops like these are disappearing quickly. The last mechanic retired and so did the shop. Big oil companies buy these places and use the pumps only, as a self service.
