Automatic pilots like this one guided the JB-2 to its target. The heading, altitude, and length of flight were pre-set into the autopilot before launching. Gyroscopes, servo-motors, an air-log counter, a compass and an altitude control instrument assisted the autopilot during flight. The servo-motors, geared to the autopilot, adjusted the missile's control surfaces (elevators and rudder) to maintain target heading. The automatic pilot and servo-motors operated on compressed air carried in tanks aboard the missile. The JB-2 was a U.S. version of the German V-1 "Buzz Bomb."

My morning Americano is almost always brewed on autopilot. I've made literally 1000s of Americanos over the years, and there's been many days where my first waking moment is standing over the espresso machine, watching the shot develop. I don't remember getting up, getting to the machine, grinding the shot, or setting things up. This morning was one of those mornings. My camera was nearby, so I quickly grabbed it and snapped this photo, which has pretty shallow focus.

The engines are Perkins 265i, with Vetus cableless throttles. Instrumentation and autopilot are Raymarine and was upgraded a few years ago. I have since added AIS and a rear view camera.

 

Teal had been kept on a marina berth connected to shore power more or less throughout her working life. One result was that the moisture content in the hull was a little bit high but even the surveyor did not think it was anything to worry about. We were intending to keep the boat on a swinging mooring at Marchwood where shore power would not be available. After contacting Fischer Panda and checking that there was still space available to install a generator, this was done before I moved the boat to Marchwood. We took the recommended option where the cooling water is separated from the exhaust. Maybe that explains why it is so quiet. Also, we like anchorages, such as Newtown (Isle of Wight), Chichester, South Deep (Poole) and Keyhaven. If two fridges are to be maintained, then a generator becomes essential. My engineering adviser suggested that to keep a decent load on the generator I should use a low wattage fan heater. So now I get up, start the genny, and put on charger, immersion heater and fan heater. When Dairne gets up, the cabin is warm, a hot shower is available, and she has a smile on her face.

 

We also have an electric 750w kettle and a 1kw hotplate, but something has to be switched off to allow their use, or the 4kw generator would be overloaded and would trip. I have done that once. When shore power is available, these save an enormous amount of expensive gas, especially useful in France where electricity is always included in the marina fee. But beware using higher power kit or you may trip out the whole pontoon!
