A GP38 and GP30 power a westbound over the Potomac River at Harper's Ferry WV in early 1976. There appears to be some empty autoparts traffic returning from Wilsmere on the head end, so this may be train #397 but who can say for sure. Ray Slagle photo, JL Sessa collection.

Having left NS's Oakwood Yard a few miles back, CN's daily interchange with NS rolls south down the Dearborn Sub and across Conrail's Lincoln Secondary at Penford, named for the original owners of these two lines (Pennsylvania Railroad and Henry Ford, of the DT&I).
The concrete arches that line much of the Dearborn Sub once held the catenary of the DT&I's short-lived electrification, put up by Henry Ford in the 1920's.

B&O 491069 was one of over 400 cars assembled by the B&O at Dubois from Thrall kits in 1965 and 1966. They were built in two number series in four different projects, underscoring the B&O's investment in the growing autoparts business during the middle 1960s. Built as class M81, they became B86 class cars under the unified car class scheme when the Chessie came into being. Notice these cars were originally built with roofwalks. While many railroads bought cars from PS and ACF that had fishbelly sills, the B&O 60' boxcar fleet had mostly examples with full length side sills, resulting in a long, low appearance. This car was photographed by Richard Louderback at Camden NJ on 11-29-1986. JL Sessa collection.
Try and get a rise from an atrophied muscle
And the nerves in your thigh just quivers and fizzles
So you know, that you're over the hill
When your mind makes a promise that your body can't fill...

A string of well-traveled auto parts boxcars sit on the old ice house track in Fleming Yard. These models belong to Scott Ascher.
Auto parts boxcars were developed in the 1960s to carry lightweight components such as body parts from stamping plants to assembly plants scattered across the country. Although the materials these cars carried were of varying sizes and could change from year to year as models changed they were shipped in racks which had standard dimensions to match the interior width and height of these boxcars, this allowed the cars to be reloaded with any of the plant's parts instead of being restricted to hauling a specific part; it also allowed the cars to easily get reassigned to another plant as traffic demands shifted. Changes in the automobile industry in the 1980s — including a decline in domestic production and locating new stamping plants close to assembly plants — made many of these cars surplus and some were reassigned for other lightweight loads such as home appliances while others still shuttled parts in the Midwest.
Here is something different from my usual but something I was asked to do. Here is an old rusted automobile in a Guilford, Maine junkyard. (image 34a8259) Please also visit: www.acadiamagic.com/.

Ryan Fleage, the owner of Fleagle's Painting, is on top of NYC 243880, blasting away years of road grime on the X67-type 86' autoparts boxcar. It's the first step in painting the car back to its Conrail appearance from 30 years ago.
In 2019, when the board of the Conrail Historical Society agreed to pursue a boxcar to house a public museum and archives, CRHS President Rudy Garbely asked CSX for the biggest boxcar in the fleet. He did his homework, and found a block of X67's that were coming to the end of their 50 year lifespan, and put in a request. The answer we wanted came back at the end of the year: where do you want it sent?
We didn't have time to inspect it before being shipped, but when it arrived we were thrilled to find a car that had been completely overhauled in 2003, sporting significant rivet replacement, roof work and a total repaint that had protected the car from corrosion.
Fleagle started on the roof, stripping it and coating it silver. Then it was time to take the blue off the sides and replace it with Freight Car Brown.
The once proud high priority autoparts train 396 (now R396 at the time of the photo) is seen at what I believe to be at Wills Creek & Philson Rds on the east slope of Sand Patch. Some color here on this date, October 3rd 1991. Mark Demaline photo, JL Sessa collection.

CN's daily local out of Oakville shuffles over Sixteen Mile creek with GTW GP40-2 6420 (ex-DTI) and CN GP38-2 4906 (ex-LIRR) leading some mixed cars for switching along the way, and a block of autoparts for Aldershot.
On the evening of May 27, 1982 Milwaukee Road train #220 is moving at a good clip as it passes Milepost 66 just east of Kirkland, IL. The train was the Union Pacific connection in Kansas City as evidenced by the pair of SD40-2s here: MILW 147 leading UP 3439. These trains were short and sweet--limited to 60 cars with intermodal and hot autoparts traffic from the Grand Trunk in Chicago. Summer evenings were usually spent around here waiting for this train to show up--it was usually through right about 8 p.m.
Image from my series called "Work spaces". This is an image of the garage owned by Lou Mandich, Unionville, Pennsylvania. The garage breathes new life into old automobiles. I am interested in the collections that one is surrounded with, and I hope that in some way these images become a kind of portrait. My images are created using light painting, allowing me to show tremendous detail, shape and texture, all of which are captured by the P45+.
With some of us eagerly awaiting new Class 50 models in OO I thought this snap from 24 June 1985 might be of interest - 50010 passes Spetchley with the Swindon to Longbridge at 19.58 - the records show it was taken on a Canon AT-1 with 50mm f1.8 Canon lens at 1/250th f4

is now my junk! My son loves tinkering with cars. So much so he now works for Tesla as a technician. But once he moved out of our house and across country, he left a lot of his ‘Treasure’ behind.
Here a box of fuses for a prior cars no longer owned, a rusty bolt and a spark plug gap gauge. Engine oil (or some other auto fluid) has spilled over the edge of the shelf he had claimed & labeled.
It was said by Lamarck that the function creates the organ. . . This applies in the biological field, but also mechanical, industrial, etc. The work of Bernd and Hilla Becher brought out this aspect of photography. What is now known as the “Düsseldorf School” has greatly influenced modern photography.
That said, I was lucky yesterday to photograph an incredible motorcycle! The goal was to present it in its entirety, but I also had fun doing “close-ups” by taking inspiration from the Becher.

A Southern 86' auto parts box car built by Greenville Steel Car passes through Manville on the Lehigh Line. At the time new automobiles were still being produced in New Jersey.

Car: SSW 65057
Date: 2019/01/05
Location: Janesville, WI
Train: None
Notes: Built in 12/67 by Pullman Standard, this 86' double door Hy-Cube was not long for the world. Several of these were in storage at South Janesville and by the summer of 2019, they were scrapped. These were a personal favorite of mine, despite looking a bit ragged near the end.
