Looking into the auto aperture mechanism, it looks very similar to the Nikon lever, except the springs are the wrong way around.
The aperture is open by default on M42 and as the pin is pressed, the lens stops down.
On Nikon F, the lever is down by default and the body holds the iris open when the lens is attached and lets it come down to the selected aperture when needed.
I stumbled upon this old truck graveyard around Tallahassee, Florida. Not sure what they were doing there, but, it made for some interesting pictures.
