Introduced in 1978, this is the very last 35mm rangefinder made by Canon, right before the auto focus cameras took the lead. It is also very similar to the 1977 A35 Datelux. The only difference is the omission of the date printing capability. The design is mostly derived from the Canonet 28, with the body being slightly wider and thicker due to the inclusion of the built-in flash, and with some body parts being made of plastics.
The programmed shutter goes from EV9 (1/60,f/2.8) to EV17(1/320,f/20), controlled by a CdS sensor powered by a 1.35V PX625 cell. The shutter is locked if the meter falls into the underexposure zone (either because there is not enough light or because the battery is low). The exposure can be locked by half-pressing the shutter release button. The selected aperture value can be seen in the view finder.
The built-in pop-up flash is powered by a single AA battery. The pop-up action turns on the flash, but the camera won't switch to the flash mode until the flash is ready (i.e. when the pilot lamp is lit). This is also reflected in the exposure meter reading-- the needle in the view finder will move from the underexposure zone into the selected aperture value. This also means it is impossible to circumvent the shutter lock by popping up the flash without installing the flash battery.
Had a great time watching a pod of pelicans fishing off the beach....
Seems like it should be a flock, but according to Wiki, a group of pelicans is a pod. Anyhow, they were fun to watch.

Here's the boom I constructed to try out some rig shots, at full extension and lowest height setting. From end to end, it is approximately 5 metres. I managed to scrounge up some Croker rowing oars that had broken near the blade for the black section - these are perfect, as one should never let free carbon fibre tube go to waste ;-). It is actually two oars, with one sliding partially over the other so the whole thing is in three sections for disassembly (it fits in the car it is being trialled on in the photo). The end section is aluminium tube from a whipper-snipper shaft, which extends and is drilled to lock at a range of intervals via a pin. The PVC end piece is just to enable really low or high shots, and to stop the pole from being so prominent in the photo and make photoshopping easier, and I just screwed my tripod ball head onto the end of that. Essentially, the only cost was the three panel-beater suction cups and plastic spring clamps, which totalled about AU$30.
