Saw this sleepy bridge resting peacefully in the fog this morning and could not resist stopping the car to capture this.

While at the main overlook to Yosemite Falls with a view looking south and downstream of dried up Yosemite Creek. My thinking in composing the image was to have a more or less leveled up view with the forest of trees leading up to the more distant ridges and peaks on the other side of Yosemite Valley. The problem, in my mind at least, was how to meter the setting given the smoke haze present added to the brightness with the highlights and minimize losing any of them. I wanted to also ensure that I captured the more shadowed areas in the nearby forest. I chose to work with Aurora HDR Pro to better bring that complete setting in the image. I later exported a TIFF image to DxO PhotoLab 5 where I did some final adjustments with contrast, saturation and brightness for the final image.

Another Acqua Alta in Venezia

A view looking to the northwest across the canyon and gorge with a setting sun at the Sunset View overlook in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Not wanting to blow any highlights from the sunlight, I metered the exposure and shutter speed to that. I chose to work with Aurora HDR Pro to better bring that complete setting in the image. I could make adjustments in the shadowed areas of the canyon and remove any color cast. I later exported a TIFF image to DxO PhotoLab 3 where I did some final adjustments with contrast, saturation and brightness for the final image.

A setting looking to the south while taking in views across eroded rock formations and walking along the Mobius Arch Loop Trail in the Alabama Hills National Scenic Area. The focal point as I composed this image was the one prominent formation that seemingly jutted out and above the others as it pointed to the skies above. I pulled back a little on the focal point to include some of the surrounding landscape to add a sense of scale and grandeur to the setting.

While walking the Wall Street area along the Navajo Loop in Bryce Canyon National Park. The view is looking to the north and up at a few trees that have grown in the openings between the soaring walls of this slot canyon. My thought on composing the same age was to go wide angle with a view that included as much of the trees as I could with the blue skies above. I felt that including the tree trunk leading up to the crown would help give a sense of perspective with their height. The problem came though with what I perceived as a large dynamic range between the sunlit areas in the upper portion of the slot canyon and the more shadowed areas around me. I made adjustments to the image exposure compensation and later worked with Aurora HDR Pro and DxO PhotoLab 5 to process the image I wanted.

From the canoe dock at Wonder Lake with a view looking to the south across the waters with Denali and other peaks of the Alaska Range off in the distance. This is what I would call an average wide angle view, where I angled my Nikon SLR camera downward, so that I could capture a more sweeping view across the lake waters. With the gently blowing breeze that morning, there wasn't really much of a chance to capture reflections off the lake. But the ripples themselves did add that shimmering feel to this national park setting. I decided to do some initial work and create an HDR image using Aurora HDR 2019. I then exported a TIFF image back to DxO PhotoLab 3 and did some more post-processing work making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation.

Korita Mostnice, near Stara Fužina / Lake Bohinj, Slovenia. I clambered up one of the side canyons to get in close to these waterfalls.

Polariser and 3-stop ND filter used.

This is a focus stack drawing from 4 sets of 5 exposures, merged/preprocessed with AuroraHDR, focus stacked (automatically) usign Photoshop, and some retouching using Lumenzia and Luminar (as a Photoshop plugin).

Between AuroraHDR's batch mode, and Photoshops automatic blending, focus stacked landscapes are a breeze. Previously I'd found the idea of blending in multiple images too much effort/daunting, so I was using just one bracket and ignoring the rest of the set. Likely makes little to no difference sharing on flickr/facebook with the current resolutions supported, but will be important for printing since I've captured all the distant detail, and now I can effortlessly pull that in to my workflow (takes more time, but is automated enough it costs me little).

I process once in AuroraHDR to produce a preset, batch apply it to all brackets (gives me a set of TIFs), which I pass the photoshop to work out which parts of the image to blend in to maximise focus throughout. Then I flatten the result to a single TIF, which is the starting point I would have had if I'd just used a single exposure/bracket, and can work from there.
