A Sunset Makes for Such a Beautiful Thing

Daylight had guided our way

But now darkness comes in only a short time

We all get to experienced the closing of a day

And I tried to make the most of today

I definitely look forward to tomorrow

So no matter where I am on this planet Earth

There’s always a book end for the day

Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one early evening as the sun was setting in Jasper National Park. This was at a roadside pullout along the Maligne Lake Rd with a view looking to the northwest. My thought on composing this image was to create a layered look with the nearby, hillsides and then more distant mountains of Pyramid Mountain and the Victoria Cross Range. The rest was metering the image to not blow any highlights from the areas caught in sunlight, while still being able to later pull out the more shadowed areas nearby in post production.

I chose to work with Aurora HDR Pro to better bring that complete setting in the image. I later exported a TIFF image to DxO PhotoLab 6 where I did some final adjustments with contrast, saturation and brightness for the final image.

What a beautiful monastery. This photo is an HDR picture consisting of three photos with +/- 3EV and then composed in Aurora HDR.

An arm of the Lake of the Ozarks can be seen from the trail leading the the castle ruins in the Ha Ha Tonka State Park in Missouri.

Trying out Aurora HDR on Windows.

The other day when I was out on the town at night, I wanted to try my hand at the Parliament building fountain. I've seen this at night many time but this is the first time I had been there. What do you think? How is my interpretation of the fountain?

Rain on Last Day in Big Bend

Rain came pouring down from dark skies above

But there’s a spot of sunshine coming through

Not far from The Window and the Chisos Mountains

The refreshment from those cooling winds

Surrounded by jagged peaks and mountainsides from a volcanic distant past

It’s the wonder of Big Bend in the west Texas desert.

Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one late afternoon/early evening in Big Bend National Park while watching a rain storm from the Chisos Mountains Lodge area. The view is looking to the northwest in the direction of The Window where one can see the sun shining off in the distance. Composing the image was then just a matter of angling my Nikon SLR camera to capture a sweeping view across the basin area to the brighter area beyond the mountains. I decided to meter the image based on that brighter area, knowing I didn’t want to blow any highlights in that portion.

I chose to work with Aurora HDR Pro to better bring that complete dynamic range present in this setting. I later exported a TIFF image to DxOÊPhotoLab 5 where I did some final adjustments with contrast, saturation and brightness for the final image.

A view looking to the west across the canyon and gorge with blue skies above at the Cedar Point overlook in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. A single HDR image I worked on in Aurora HDR Pro and later in DxO PhotoLab 3. This was definitely a difficult image to capture as I was looking almost directly at the sun from this view with the canyon below.

Saxony-Anhalt/ GER

Quedlinburg is a town situated just north of the Harz mountains, in the district of Harz in the west of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. In 1994, the castle, church and old town were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Quedlinburg has a population of more than 24,000. The town was the capital of the district of Quedlinburg until 2007, when the district was dissolved. Several locations in the town are designated stops along a scenic holiday route, the Romanesque Road.

In the centre of the town are a wide selection of half-timbered buildings from at least five different centuries (including a 14th-century structure, one of Germany's oldest), while around the outer fringes of the old town are examples of Jugendstil buildings, dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Since December 1994, the old town of Quedlinburg and the castle mount with the Stiftskirche (collegiate church) are listed as one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. Quedlinburg is one of the best-preserved medieval and Renaissance towns in Europe, having escaped major damage in World War II.

In 2006, the Selke valley branch of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways was extended to Quedlinburg from Gernrode, giving access to the historic steam narrow gauge railway, Alexisbad and the high Harz plateau.

The castle and Stifstkirche St. Servatius still dominate the town like in the early Middle Ages. The church is a prime example of German Romanesque style. The treasure of the church, containing ancient Christian religious artifacts and books, was stolen by an American soldier but brought back to Quedlinburg in 1993 and is again on display here.

The former Stiftskirche St. Wiperti was established in 936 when the Kanonikerstift St. Wigpertus (of male canons) was moved from the castle hill to make way for what became Quedlinburg Abbey. The church was built at the location of the first Ottonian Royal palace at Quedlinburg. Around 1020, a three-aisled crypt was added to the basilica. The crypt, which survived all later alterations to the church, is also a designated stop on the Romanesque Road today.
