The first Northen Lights this season!
I like to hear what you think. I love creative comments, I have no problem with negative such as long as it's somewhat constructive.
My personal favorite from August 2006
It's a bit unsharp, and far from technically perfect, but at least it gives a good impression of the great display we had on jan 24. 2012

With news that Mother Nature was going to put on a Northern Lights display we headed to one of our favorite spots to view and capture them – Moosehead Lake, Maine - located just above the 45 degree latitude point.
The Visual: a huge green arc with dancing spikes, pulsating waves of light that stretched overhead and over 180 degrees across the sky. At a few different points it was a variable rainbow of colors. All of this was being perfectly reflected in the smooth-as-glass water right in front of us.
The Audio: a nearby crackling campfire, the call of the loons, some crickets & frogs and the occasional sound of a chipmunk scurrying past.
The show started just before 10PM. It ebbed and flowed through the night until almost 3AM - this was easily the longest and most impressive aurora display we have witnessed. This image is one frame from an 800+ frame time lapse that captured the entire event.

Auroras dancing on thin ice.
Taikamaa is one of those places where I often photograph the first Northern Lights of the Autumn. The name Taikamaa is self-invented. Taikamaa was found by chance a few summer ago. I was looking for new photography places with my wife Tarja who is also an avid landscape photographer.
It was a bright summer night when we drove in the countryside in Northern Finland. You could only see forest around. Suddenly a wonderful sight opened up. The sight was so beautiful so we named it Taikamaa. “magic land” in English.
After that night we have visited the site several times and it is one of the best places to photograph Aurora borealis because in autumn when the sky is bright you can almost always see aurora borealis from Taikamaa. In addition there is water everywhere and water reflects auroras beautifully as you can see in the photo above.
The photo above is one of the best photos I’ve taken of the Northern Lights. That image is a four-photo vertical panorama. Panoramic photography of Northern Lights is the type of photography that is challenging and it requires concentration and good routine. I have photographed panoramas for a long time and I try to improve my skills all the time. My desire for photography is still growing.

For months I've now been away from Scandinavia and I have to say: its the northern lights I miss the most...
Aurora borealis over Austnesfjorden, Austvågøya, Lofoten, Norway, March 2010
This one is from 2014, but I never processed it and can't remember why. It must be an age thing.
Just looking at my aurora pics again for another project, I saw this and loved the range of colours in it.

Dog Sleds at the Aurora Village
The most fun you can have at -41c!
This was my first night at the aurora village with Holly and Sinead, and we had a blast ! The aurora activity was only classed as 'moderate' but it felt like it should have been rated higher, it was in the sky for most of the night! Also, I spent 5 hours here last night (2 alone after the girls went back to the room to sleep). Yellowknife is a photographers dream!
This is just 1 shot from the 1022 I took last night, and is of an overturned dog sled in front of the dog kennels. The aurora was dancing over them most of the night, and I have several timelapses ill try work on over the next week or so!
3 more nights of this, and tonight is supposed to be classed as 'active' so looking forward to what it brings!

That was the first time in my life, that I saw "Northern Lights". Great!
Great to see the Aurora again on Saturday night which went on and on for hours. I took this outside Scone.
I'm out of practice with night photography, focus is a bit off, photo a bit grainy but you get the idea!
The Northern lights, photo taken last winter in Geta, Åland, Finland. Hope to get some new photos of the Aurora this winter!
Northern lights over Interior Alaska. It's still early in the season, so I'm going overkill with the quantity of photos, lol.
This was a display of the aurora from the Forest of Bowland Lancs at around 10pm on Sunday night. I had seen an earlier showing down at Rivington reservoir which was the brightest aurora I've ever seen. It came & went very quickly and I also had a lot of cloud to contend with, but this is the third time in 2016 I have seen naked eye aurora, so not bad going. Here's to more!
