Once upon a time…
Anamorphic mural created by Leon Keer and Massina during Vibrations Urbaines Festival in Pessac, France with Augmented Reality by Joost Spek.
Leon Keer is a specialist in creating anamorphic street art. The 3d effect caused by this technique is only visible from one viewpoint. The artwork invites spectators to grab their phone and interact with the art.
The Leon Keer app connects Augmented Reality with the anamorphic art. By scanning the painting with your smartphone or tablet, you can see how the painting will come to life.
If you are not on location you can also download an image (www.leonkeer.com/ar/) and use that as the marker to start the 3d animation.
This, I am sure, is one of many pics of Ohan Oda and Steve Feiner's "Augmented Reality Games" Interactivity Demo at the CHI 2010 Media Showcase. Professor Steve Feiner and PhD Student Ohan Oda came to present the work and it was a crowd favorite.
The game depicted in this picture is a very basic game where you have to use a UMPC with a touch screen like a targeting lens and shoot a bunch of blocks off of the table surface.
Where are the blocks you ask? That's the cool - and slightly awkward - thing about augmented reality (AR, for short). Augmented Reality combines the physical world of surfaces (such as tables, floors, and walls) with the digital world of targets to shoot, projectiles to shoot the tiles, and any number of other illusory features. In this case the entire game happens somewhere between the physical table and the digital artifacts rendered on the screen. As player tap - or pound - on the screen small, round, projectiles appear to shoot from just below the UMPC camera's view, which the players can see on the screen. The game begins tame enough but quickly intensifies as the limited range of the camera and lack of peripheral vision encourages the players to wildly flail about as they try to get their blocks in their sites before the competition does. The added benefit of face-to-face, heads-up, competition is a definite quality to AR play - the likes of which have not been seen since the old school tabletop arcades!
More cool AR towards the end of the set, when I visited Blair McIntyre's Lab at Georgia Tech's Graphics, Visualization, and Usability Lab.

This was the first ever-made 3D Hello Kitty and Sanrio characters with the Augmented Reality (AR) technology. Users simply stand in front of a camera with the marker card and they will then see on screen their face turned into Hello Kitty or other characters, depends on the market card that they have selected.
This was a project initiated by Sanrio Digital as a promotional campaign for Hello Kitty Online in Hong Kong. Dream Cortex designed the booth display and developed the AR Hello Kitty game.

Take a look at the future with Google - a vision of your life in augmented reality with AR glasses that will allow you to interact with your world just like a phone; but these sit on your nose.
You certainly won't be able to ignore the small icons popping up in front of your eyes as you look at the sky, the tube or at your breakfast.
Google has already started testing the glasses and has created the video below to start a conversation around their potential uses and improvements.
They want your feedback so watch the video and then click here to make your suggestions. bit.ly/HarHvc
I was lucky enough to test the pre-release of the iPhone ARToolKit SDK from ARToolWorks, so here's the result of a few days of hacking around.

The ultimate goal was to find a way to run the AR software on a wearable game system, but of course it was prototyped on a PC.
Augmented XP:
