This is an Augmented Reality Simulator from The University of Pittsburgh Center for Simulation and Medical R & D displayed at the IMSH 2012 Serious Games Showcase.
Poor Anderson Cooper. Somebody stuck him with this gimmicky augmented reality panel and he struggled awkwardly to get it to work.

Through augmented realities (AR) displayed on smart phones, guests put themselves into two iconic surrealist artworks and interacted with two virtual sculptures.

This was an online application which 'augments' reality.
Essentially, you print out a black and white graphic which the computer can recognise, this is used to project a 3d image image.
In this case, the image was of wind turbines. Blowing into the microphone caused the turbines to turn.

Pretty much the best thing ever.
So, here's the next steps for this technology. Rather than encourage you to print it out, direct people to load the image up on your smart-phone (see below links for origin of that idea), but then create 2-way communication between the phone image page and the augmented reality page, so that they update. How crazy would it be if when the model disappears, it re-appears on your phone?!

About RWR
READ/WRITE REALITY (RWR) is an intensive and visionary workshop created by FakePress Publishing and Art is Open Source (AOS) in collaboration with Centro Studi Etnografia Digitale to pragmatically explore the methodological, technical and technological possibilities offered by Ubiquitous Publishing. The first edition of RWR was held on September 2011 in Cava de’ Tirreni (Salerno, Italy), at the Ostello “Borgo Scacciaventi”. The result of the workshop was an Augmented Reality Movie created by a wonderful group of 35 people from allover the world, in a complete hand-to-hand process.
