sometimes you need to raise your head up despite your wish to look on the world from the top downwards. Not only good exercise but also amazing things might be there to observe.

The Atrium of the UBC Student Union Building - Alma Mater Society (AMS) is south facing to let in an abundance of natural light.
Updating my take on a location I last visited a year ago, this is the west atrium inside the 35-storey CityPoint Building on Ropemaker Street. I would have used any excuse to revisit the location because it's such a beautiful example of geometric urban architecture, but my aim when reshooting this look-up was to capture a wider, sharper, brighter and slightly more balanced finish.
The image is a blend of seven exposures, allowing for a very clean finish in the shadows while controlling the highlights at the top of the atrium. Using luminosity masks combined with dodging and burning, I was also able to emphasise the structure of the building and the reflections in its glass. Finally, I desaturated the warmer colours within the windows (where, even at dusk on a quiet Sunday, there were people working), and created a gradient map to add a slightly cooler tone within the shadows.

Even though naturally ventilated and exposed to natural light at a number of points, the interior spaces felt dark and bland due to the expansive use of concrete. The internal circulation didn't work as well as intended as spaces lacked definition and purpose.
Now something completely different...
The grocery store where we shop has a beautiful, raised atrium roof which lets a lot of natural light into the store, making the shopping experience more pleasant.
The other day I realized it would make for an interesting photograph, so I took a couple of minutes to take a few shots with my iPhone 14 Pro Max.
The blue sky and white clouds can be seen through glass windows on the periphery of the 14-segmented roof structure.
It is located in the center of the store and is probably 40 feet above one's head.
Enjoy!

Whenever there's an upcoming change in life, I end up getting a bit wistful for other times in life and looking back at old pictures like this one. Sometimes, the old memories they invoke help me make the final call.
Another twilight shot of the interior of the Reichstag dome in Berlin, designed by Norman Foster. I could have stayed there for hours taking photos!
I’m not sure “Atrium” is the correct designation but I don’t know what else to call it. I like the angles that create the vanishing point perspective along with the pattern of the shadows coming from the sunlight through the roof.
