The Colors are not true in this pillow. The yellow is really green, as the gone stitching colors are green and purple. It also has many fabrics and trims and looks really rich.

The Japanese motorcycle most commonly associated with café racer conversions is the ubiquitous Honda CB750. But we haven’t seen anything like this one before. It’s raw and different, with a rough ‘n’ ready look that strangely works. It was built by the Alabama shop Garage Company Customs—not to be confused with Yoshinobu Kosaka’s Garage Company in LA—and shop owner Larry has sent us a little background. “We built two bikes for a father and a son, and this one is the son’s bike. We started with a ’75 CB750 from a local junkyard that was pretty rough: the owner of the yard said it had been with him for at least 15 years. We either redid or replaced everything on it. The customer wanted something rigid, but wanted the café look as well. I’ve never seen a rigid café bike, so we elected to use the stock tank along with clubman bars to give it the look he wanted. The stainless 4-into-2 exhaust was a collaborative effort between us and a good friend, Walker at Morgan Performance Fabrication. The motor was completely gone through with all OEM parts and stock specs, and we used a ribbed rear fender instead of a tail section because of the rigid back half.” The result is long, low and mean-looking, the motorcycle equivalent of a rat rod auto. GCC styles itself as “Blue-collared, brash and blunt, building kick-ass bikes on a real man’s budget,” and by the looks of this CB750, they’re on the right track.

Nothing says get 'er done like a toast.

Went for an explore back in April 2003, with my new GPS receiver. It kept a log of where I went. In this case, I was exploring the Clifton Iron Mine ruins, and associated railroads and roads.

The mine was discovered in the early 1800's when compasses would go crazy because of the magnetite. But due to the remote location in the wilds of the Adirondacks, the iron was left untouched. After the Civil War, however, iron became extremely valuable, making it worthwhile to try to mine this lode.

First they tried building a road past Huftle Hill to the northwest. It was built as well as they could, with the gentlest slopes possible. The oxen couldn't haul the heavy ore carts up and over the hill, though.

Second, they tried building a railroad from the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg in DeKalb, mostly following the West Branch of the St. Regis River. But iron was very expensive, so they built it using maple rails with an iron strap to help bear the weight. 26 miles. They ran it for some number of months, maybe more than a year, I'm not sure. Unfortunately, the iron straps curled under the weight and pulled out of the rails, sometimes penetrating the car above.

They gave up.

Time passes.

The US is embroiled in another war, and iron becomes very valuable again. This time, they build a highway from Degrasse in the west, and extended a logging railroad in from the east. They had a few spur tracks at the plant, and a wye. The wye is quite obvious because I walked it, and you can see my trace.

The mine operates until about 1954 when it becomes uneconomic again, and is mostly torn down. The remains of a few buildings exist, and the office building is now the hunt club's building.

Cullman City Swearing-In Ceremony Organizational Meeting 2016

Monday evening was auspicious at the Lucille N. Galin Auditorium inside Cullman City Hall.

At 7:00 pm, the City of Cullman hosted a Swearing-In Ceremony, Organizational Meeting, and After-Reception.

The room was at beyond full capacity with a head count at or near its fire marshal approved capacity.

The occasion was primarily for Cullman city government to official swear-in mayor-elect Woody Jacobs, and city council member-elects Johnny Cook, Jenny Folsom, Garlan Gudger, Clint Hollingsworth, and Coach Andy Page.

The evening began with Cullman City Clerk Wesley Moore calling the proceedings to order. Then, after an invocation by Reverend John Bussman of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Cullman City Police Department, and Cullman Fire Rescue Honor Guard conducted a somber yet uplifting Presentation of Colors.

After the standing room only crowd inside the auditorium participated in the Pledge of Allegiance, Katie Burney came forward to sing a touching rendition of "God Bless America”.

Next up was District Judge, the Honorable Wells R. Turner, III. He conducted administering the oaths of office to the following elected officials:

CULLMAN MAYOR

• Woody Jacobs

CULLMAN CITY COUNCIL

• Coach Andy Page - Place 1

• Garlan E. Gudger, Jr. - Place 2

• John W. Cook - Place 3

• Clint Hollingsworth - Place 4

• Jenny Folsom - Place 5

New Mayor Jacobs ran a smart, targeted, hard working campaign to defeat defeated popular, two-term incumbent mayor Max A. Townson during the August 23rd municipal election.

Clint Hollingsworth was challenged by cagey political veteran Wayne Walker in the same election. Hollingsworth won in decisive landslide fashion.

Cook, Folsom, Gudger and Page ran unopposed.

Next, a not-so-brief organization meeting ensued with Moore surrendering the gavel to Gudger.

Through roll call votes, the City Council voted in the following parties in positions of leadership inside City Hall:

Garland Gudger - President

Jenny Folsom - President Pro-tem

Roy Williams - City Attorney

Jason Knight - Municipal Judge

Micheal Fuller - City Prosecutor

Also, council member appointments were made to fill various utility boards positions.

Andrew Siegenthaler, Pastor of Christ Covenant Presbyterian Church, closed with a topical and spot-on benediction.

The after-reception was then held in the lobby of Cullman City Hall. Light refreshments, finger foods, and good spirits were made available to all. The artichoke dip rated somewhere above 5 stars.

It is believed the new Mayor, his immediate family as well as close associates celebrated at All-Steak Restaurant immediately after. Before he departed City Hall, the new mayor provided his thoughts on the the evening's events and the immediate future of his office. He also made respects to departing former Mayor Max Townson.

The next officially scheduled meeting of the Cullman City Council will be November 14th at 7:00 pm in the same location.

For years, Jordan has been associated with its epic history and landscapes, from the hidden ruined city of Petra to the red-sand dunes and canyons of Wadi Rum.

It's a country with stunning history, but not really known for hiking - the Jordan Trail, a recently introduced epic 650km route stretching the entire length of the state from its north to the south, may however well change that perception.

Each hike must have its most popular and admired part, and for the Jordan Trail it comes two-thirds of the way through the route with the stage from the Dana Biosphere Reserve to the ancient city of Petra.

Starting in one of Jordan's most scenic nature reserves, it takes four days mostly on the little-trodden and unmarked paths to finally reach the country's most iconic sights at Petra, which one enters - contrary to the vast majority of visitors - backdoor and alone.

-----

During the third day, we left Wadi Feid shortly before 5AM hiking in the eastern direction on the mostly dry rock riverbed.

The trail then continued along the escarpment line of the Jabal Safaha mountain ridge, offering stunning views of the deep valleys below us.

Having passed the Qutla ruins of a former settlement (no water source), we continued hiking in the southern direction, following now a slowly diminishing footpath.

Then, we entered an interesting sandstone landscape full of beautiful rock formations of different shapes and colours - the area here somehow reminded me of the Needles national park, Utah.

Then, we decided to make a shortcut to the Ammarin camp, our place of overnight stay - following a 4WD track to a ridge eastwards, we reached the pass realizing to our great relief that the shortcut is passable, despite quite steep descent requiring some minor scrambling.

We reached the secluded Ammarin camp shortly afterwards, and having much needed shower we enjoyed lazy laying on mattresses in the shade below a tall rock, sipping mint tea and taking a much needed rest.
