Mark Crain, Simon Professor of Political Economy and chair of policy studies, Nicole Crain, visiting professor of economics, and John Leone, associate director of major gifts, with Kevin Mandia '92
Students got some firsthand insight into the state of national cybersecurity when Kevin Mandia '92, senior vice president and chief operating officer of FireEye™ security software firm, visited campus last week. A computer science graduate, Mandia presented a talk on “The State of the Hack,” and was interviewed for an upcoming segment of Lafayette Lens, a student-run production created in partnership with WLVT Channel 39, the Lehigh Valley PBS affiliate. Every aspect of the half-hour show is produced by students in the Political Economy class taught by Mark Crain, Simon Professor of Political Economy and chair of policy studies. It airs on PBS at the end of each semester.

Ms. Erinna Dia, Associate Director Early Childhood Development UNICEF New York HQ, Mr. Zacharie Fotso Fokam, Monitoring Specialist UNICEF WCARO, accompanied by Ms. Seny Mamé Loua, in charge of community health at the Division Provincial de la Santé (DPS) of Nzérékoré for the past 20 years and Mr. Felice Yoamou, Community Relay for 2 years in Kobéla, will visit the family of 2-month-old Niama to provide advice on good feeding and care practices for infants, young children and women in the convergence commune of Kobéla, Nzérékoré region in Guinea. UNICEF Guinea country office in collaboration with UNICEF WCARO regional office and UNICEF New York headquarters, conducted a field mission in October 2022 to review the status of the effective implementation of primary health care and the Child Friendly Communities (CFC) initiative in Nzérékoré region, Guinea.
The administrative region of Nzérékoré, located in the southeast of Guinea, 954 km from the capital Conakry, includes 6 health districts and has an estimated total population of approximately 2 million inhabitants. The epidemiological profile of this region is characterized by outbreaks of epidemics, including cases of measles, Ebola virus disease, Lassa hemorrhagic fever, and Marburg. Over the past two decades, the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene in Guinea has been committed to making maternal, newborn, and child health a priority. However, insufficient progress has been made based on the results of the DHS from 1999 to 2018. There has been a slight decrease in neonatal mortality rates from 48 to 32 per 1,000 live births, infant and child mortality from 177 per 1,000 to 111 deaths per 1,000 live births, and infant mortality from 98 deaths to 67 per 1,000 in 2018. Only 27% of children under 5 years of age sleep under Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs). 55% of children under 5 with diarrhea received treatment with Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS) and only 22% with ORS-Zinc. Only 83% of children with Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) received treatment or counseling and 30% on the same day. Only 24% of children aged 12-23 months received all vaccinations with persistent measles outbreaks. Low rate of exclusive breastfeeding 33%. High prevalence of stunting at 30%, 9% are emaciated or acutely malnourished and 16% are underweight. Low level of sanitation, 52% of households have an improved sanitation facility. The Ministry of Health's main strategy for Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is based on primary health care. In 2018, UNICEF in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene (MSHP) operationalized this new policy in 40 communes known as convergence communes with the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralization (MATD).

Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown, Lisbon Portugal
Charles Correa Associates designed this research and diagnostic centre located in Lisbon. It is a state-of-the-art facility guided by some of the best scientist in the world. The site, where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean, is steeped in history. It is the site where Henry the Navigator, Vasco de Gama and other great Portuguese left on their journeys into the unknown—a perfect metaphor for the discoveries of contemporary science today. The 3 units that constitute the project are:
•the largest for the doctors and scientist,
•the second for the theatre, the exhibition hall, the foundation offices, etc,
•the third is an open-air amphitheatre for the city.
They have been arranged to create a 125m long pathway leading diagonally across the site, towards the open seas. This pathway is ramped up at a gentle slope of 1:20, so as you ascend, you see only sky ahead of you. At the end of the ramp are two stone monoliths, straight from the quarry. When you reach the highest point, you begin to see a large body of water, which seemingly connects (i.e. without any visual break) to the ocean beyond. In the centre of this water body, just below the surface of the water, is an oval shaped object—made of stainless steel and slightly convex, so that it reflects the blue sky and passing clouds above.
“Associated” is a site specific show in a severely damaged brownstone, currently with a Vacate Order, issued by the DOB. As you may recall, the huge fire on Nov 12th 2010 at the Associated Supermarket on 5th Avenue and 17th Street not only damaged the supermarket building including the Open Source Gallery, but also a brownstone next door. The 3 family house, the Gallery owners’ home, was also rendered uninhabitable by the blaze.
There is no exact date for the show. There will be a 2 week window when the Vacate Order will be dropped and the contractors will start their work. All participating artists are prepared to install their work any day within the next month.

Wat Chalong is Phuket’s most important Buddhist temple and is the biggest and most ornate of Phuket’s 29 Buddhist monasteries. The architecture is typical of wats found throughout Thailand. Wat Chalong is associated with the revered monks, Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang, both of whom were famous for there work in herbal medicine and tending to the injured. During the tin miners’ rebellion of 1876 they mobilized aid for the injured on both sides. They also mediated in the rebellion, bringing the warring parties together to resolve their dispute. Statues honoring them stand in the sermon hall (viharn). Many Thais come here to be blessed by the monks and receive a good luck charm in the form of a string tied around the wrist, which they believe protects them from injury and illness.
Many local Thais and Asian tourists will set off fire crackers and ask for the lucky lottery numbers, and have their fortune told. Just inside the main hall on the floor before the image are two cans of what looks like shaved bamboo chopsticks. Pick one up and shake the can back and forth rhythmically until one of the sticks works its way to the top and falls to the floor. Read the number, then walk around the corner to the right where there is a wooden cabinet on the wall. Open the drawer with the corresponding number and take one of the slips of paper inside. Get someone to translate it for you or hold onto it until you get back to your hotel where the desk clerk can translate it. Also on the floor are several pairs of red wooden blocks made from bamboo roots and shaped like twin halves of a mango. These help you make decisions. Pose a question that requires a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer. Toss the a pair blocks in the air and watch how they land on the floor. If both land with the same side up the answer is ‘no’; if they land, one up and one down, the answer is ‘yes’. Whichever form of divination you choose, be sure to leave a donation at the alter. It will go towards the upkeep of the shrine.

The Fountains Abbey was sadly lost on the Dogger in February 1962 inbound to Hull/Goole from Hamburg and Bremerhaven - 2 crewmen lost. Cargo combusted in a force 11 storm and she burnt out. Crew took to the lifeboats and saved by Trawlers from Lowestoft.
The name Chautauqua is usually associated with the town of Chautauqua in Chautauqua County, New York. Chautauqua was named for Chautauqua Lake and the lake received its name “Chautauqua” from the Native American Seneca people who lived in the area. Also located in Chautauqua is the Chautauqua Institution, a popular nonprofit education and summer resort that can trace its beginnings back to 1874.
The Chautauqua Institution today says, “We are a community of artists, educators, thinkers, faith leaders and friends dedicated to exploring the best in humanity.” They annually host a series of programs featuring lectures from a wide variety of fields along with music and theater just as they did in the late 1800s.
In 1904 Keith Vawter and Roy Ellison appropriated the concept of the Chautauqua Institution to create a for-profit business much to the chagrin of the Institution. They basically saw an opportunity to make money by taking the Chautauqua Institution idea on the road as a form of entertainment going from town to town as “Circuit Chautauquas” or “Tent Chautauquas.”
These traveling Chautauqua shows were not affiliated with the Chautauqua Institution. Instead, they traveled about the country much like a circus or fair selling locals’ tickets to see lecturers, musicians, and theater productions under a tent while marketing it all as educational and enlightening. Circuit Chautauqua’s reached their peak in the mid-1920s appearing to over 45 million people in over 10,000 communities before finally playing out by 1940.
On Wednesday, July 1, 1914, a Chautauqua opened in Statesville for a 6-day run featuring 31 events all for a $2-dollar ticket. A large 3 ft. x 20 ft. banner advertising the event was hung across a downtown street and 2,500 “Photo Story Booklets” containing the programs schedule passed out. The Chautauqua tent with 1,200 seats was set up on a lot on the corner of Broad and Tradd Streets.
The Chautauqua continued to visit Statesville and Mooresville over the next few years. On June 10th, 1918 the “Statesville Chautauqua” opened for a six-day run featuring “Life in the Trenches Vivid and Timely Lecture by Captain Leslie Vickers of the Royal Scotch Fusileers.” The Royal Scots Fusiliers was a line infantry regiment of the British Army that existed from 1678 until 1959.
A rare 1918 copy of “Life in the Trenches” is part of the Local History Collection at the Iredell County Public Library in Statesville. Images of newspaper articles from the Chautauqua visit to Statesville in 1914 were taken from microfilm of the Statesville Sentinel (1909-1922) housed at the library and created by the State Archives of North Carolina, Division of Archives and Records, part of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
