The Maya associated the colour red with death and rebirth, and often covered graves and skeletal remains with cinnabar.

Burial sites were oriented to provide access to the next world.

Graves faced north or west, in the directions of the Maya Heavens.

The concept of reincarnation is one strongly mentioned in Mayan belief and religion.

Mayan Representation of Reincarnation

The 'Popol Vuh' gives importance to the 'Maize God', and how the Mayan people themselves descended from 'maize people' created by this god.

In the 'Popol Vuh' that the K'iche' Maya wrote, (one of the few surviving codices), it tells the story of the reincarnation of the Maize God.

In the tale, the Maize God retreats to the underworld, and with the Two Hero Twins, battling the monsters and lords of the place, makes way back to the material world.

He is reborn again, dies, and on and on the cycle continues.

The Christopher Columbus Memorial, executed by sculptor Giuseppe Ciochetti, was dedicated in Washington Park on October 12, 1927. Funded by the Associated Italian Societies of Newark and the Giuseppe Verdi Society, the memorial features a bronze portrait of Christopher Columbus atop a tall square base adorned with four bronze relief plaques depicting the commissioning, embarkation, voyage, and landing of Columbus. Each corner of the base, between the reliefs, is adorned with a standing female figure representing discovery. The female figures stand with their faces directed toward the sky and their hands raised to their chests. The corners above each female figure are carved with fluted stone columns, above which a bronze garland encircles the base. Un March 1973, one of the base plaques fell off and was taken to the Bureau of Parks and Ground warehouse to await replacement by the Department of Public Works. Graffiti was cleaned from the base of the memorial in April 1985.

El cuervo pescador / fish crow (Corvus ossifragus)

The fish crow (Corvus ossifragus) is a species of crow associated with wetland habitats in the eastern and southeastern United States.

The fish crow was given its binomial name by the Scottish ornithologist Alexander Wilson in 1812, in the fifth volume of his American Ornithology.[2][3] The binomial is from Latin; Corvus means "raven", while ossifragus means "bone-breaker". It is derived from os or ossis, meaning "bone", and frangere, meaning "to break".[4] The English-language common name fish crow also derives from Wilson, who ascribed the name to the crow's aquatic diet, as described to him by local fishermen. He distinguished the fish crow from John Bartram's great seaside crow by the former's diminutive size when compared to the American crow

The fish crow's taxonomic relation to other species of the Corvus genus is still poorly understood, but DNA sequencing indicates that it is most closely related to the palm crow (C. palmarum) and the Jamaican crow (C. jamaicensis), with the three species forming a Nearctic clade.

For years, Jordan has been associated with its epic history and landscapes, from the hidden ruined city of Petra to the red-sand dunes and canyons of Wadi Rum.

It's a country with stunning history, but not really known for hiking - the Jordan Trail, a recently introduced epic 650km route stretching the entire length of the state from its north to the south, may however well change that perception.

Each hike must have its most popular and admired part, and for the Jordan Trail it comes two-thirds of the way through the route with the stage from the Dana Biosphere Reserve to the ancient city of Petra.

Starting in one of Jordan's most scenic nature reserves, it takes four days mostly on the little-trodden and unmarked paths to finally reach the country's most iconic sights at Petra, which one enters - contrary to the vast majority of visitors - backdoor and alone.

-----

During the second day, we left Feynan Eco Lodge before sunrise, with packed breakfasts and lunches prepared by the lodge staff for our hike. Also, we needed to take care of water; on top of two 1,5 l bottles, I was carrying another 6 l of water (using the rather practical MSR Dromedary Bag) - almost 10kg in total in the form of the precious liquid! (We knew there is no water source till the stage end in Wadi Feid).

We followed a few 4WD tracks when crossing Wadi Malaga, and then hiked on footpaths to pass on the eastern side of smaller hills of Jabal al-Hamra, Jabal Mahzan and Jabal Barwas.

With expansive plains of Wadi Araba to the west and the rising mountains to the east, we started to gradually ascend the slopes, crossing Wadi Barwas, Wadi abu Hamdtha and Wadi al-Jilf, and finally reaching a point near the shallow wadi to meet an old graded donkey & camel trail ascending more steeply up the hillside.

The pass widened closer to its top where we finally reached the saddle called Ras Naqb Shdeid, offering breathtaking views in both the directions.

Then we continued downhill using the same old path to the right side of the saddle, cutting the steep grade down at the top and then flattening up as it winded to the left to follow a small gully, finally meeting the perennial spring-fed Wadi Feid below.

“Associated” is a site specific show in a severely damaged brownstone, currently with a Vacate Order, issued by the DOB. As you may recall, the huge fire on Nov 12th 2010 at the Associated Supermarket on 5th Avenue and 17th Street not only damaged the supermarket building including the Open Source Gallery, but also a brownstone next door. The 3 family house, the Gallery owners’ home, was also rendered uninhabitable by the blaze.

There is no exact date for the show. There will be a 2 week window when the Vacate Order will be dropped and the contractors will start their work. All participating artists are prepared to install their work any day within the next month.

U.P. Breaking News: K. I. Sawyer Latest KC-135 Emergency Landing/Raising Safety Concerns

The following exclusive information was not reported yet by Upper Peninsula TV stations and other media.

Many safety questions remain and a military plane is officially grounded after an emergency in the skies over Marquette County, Michigan on Tues. July 8, 2014

The emergency landing of a KC-135 refueling tanker is the latest in a series of similar hydraulic incidents involving the aging fleet of Milwaukee's 128th Air Refueling Wing, Upper Peninsula Breaking News has learned.

Veteran Investigative Reporter Greg Peterson has the story:

upperpeninsulabreakingnews.wordpress.com/2014/07/09/u-p-b...

youtu.be/tocLjvEslBA

-----

Essentially a flying gas station – this Air National Guard KC-135 is grounded – following an emergency that has happened at least 5 times in the past two years to KC 135 refueling tankers from the 128th Air Refueling Wing in Milwaukee.

That's right – at least 5 times in the past two years – a KC-135 from the 128th has developed hydraulic problems resulting in emergency landings at airports around the Midwest.

The tankers are all about 50 years old.

In fact in June 2013, a reporter for Milwaukee Television station WISN TV-12 investigated a rash of KC-135 emergency landings after hydraulic warning.

Upper Peninsula Breaking News called the 128th's public affairs office to verify this important safety problem.

With overcast skies, the three-member crew of this KC-135 declared a hydraulic emergency:

Chief Don Hutchens, Forsyth Township Volunteer Fire Department:

Emergency officials from across Marquette County responded to the plane's call for help – fearing it might crash while landing – which would have been catastrophic.

The KC -135 was among several planes from the 128th Refueling Wing that have been practicing touch and goes on K.I. Sawyer's long runways.

Now the Marquette County Airport, the once vibrant K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base was a Strategic Air Command base – constantly on alert - with bomber crews ready to fly in moments.

This reporter has had the pleasure of riding on two KC-135 Refueling Tankers – as show in this photo when I worked at WLUC TV-6 in Marquette.

We refueled F-16 Jets over Lake Huron.

Then this reporter became one of only a handful of civilians to ride aboard a B-52 Bomber – this while I did features stories for the Mining Journal newspaper.

I was given this official coin of the Sawyer bomber wing and a patch – after as 12-hour flight that included Fourth of July Parades and an airshow in Grand Rapids.

This reporter hopes the officials at Milwaukee's 128th Air Refueling Wing get to the bottom of this hydraulic issues before there is a tragedy – as the large number of emergencies on this flying gas station is scary to all involved.

Military plane makes emergency landing in Indiana

www.wisn.com/news/south-east-wisconsin/milwaukee/Military...

A plane from Milwaukee's 128th Air Refueling Wing of the Wisconsin Air National Guard is grounded and undergoing repairs after an in-flight emergency Tuesday.

For the fourth time in two months a KC-135 from Milwaukee makes an emergency landing, this time in Indiana.

The flight crew lost control of the hydraulic system and made an emergency landing in Indiana.

It's the fourth in-flight emergency in recent weeks involving four KC-135 refueling tankers.

Each of the planes is about 50 years old, which has some wondering if the aging aircraft are as safe as they should be.
