More than 2,800 single parents on income and disability assistance are already getting the supports they need to find employment and build a more secure future through the Single Parent Employment Initiative (SPEI), a program that provides skills training or work experience and wrap-around supports.

Minister of Social Development and Social Innovation Michelle Stilwell met with three of the participants, two single fathers and a single mother, who were among the first to access the program, to discuss their experiences and hopes for the future. Donald Cameron and Heidi Ackermann are just about to graduate from training programs and Donald McCutcheon is halfway through a work experience program.

ENTER ''THE WACKY WABBIT'' AJ841

G-BJST Wacky Wabbit - A decision was made by the T6 Harvard syndicate in August 2014 to repaint G-BJST in a new colour scheme for 2015 as the current paint was looking rather tired. The idea to paint her as a former RAF Desert Air Force (DAF) Mk.II Harvard was suggested by Andy to the group, and it was agreed. However, the question was, who is going to pay for it ? Andy put out the feelers for a sponsor, and that’s when talks began with Richard Pike and Sam Woodgate of RS Paintworks based at Fishburn airfield. (Now at Eshott airfield Northumberland as of 2016) As a start-up enterprise, they looked at Harvard as a flagship project to launchpad their business.

Why the ''Wacky Wabbit'' ? - T6 Harvard Ltd added the logo purely for marketing purposes. Andrew Goodall found the design on the internet on a World War two patch that was for sale on eBay. Andrew decided to use the design and colour in the yellow Harvard with British Desert Camouflage. We knew nothing about this badge other than a cool design and would look nice on the aircraft. By pure chance, Andrew was contacted by Chris Applegarth, whose father was in 5 BFTS in 1945 and had the original design, an unbelievable coincidence !

Between Llandudno Junction and Deganwy, the Wales Coast Path crosses the A55 Expressway near the eastern portal of Conwy Tunnel. The land in this vicinity was created by the “cut and cover” tunneling method, which involves digging a trench and then placing a roof over the top.

The “immersed tube” method was used, for the first time in Britain, for most of the underwater part of the tunnel. Six sections of concrete tunnel tube were cast in a basin excavated near Morfa Conwy. Each section weighed c.30,000 tons and measured 118 metres long, 24 metres wide and 10.5 metres high. The cross-section was large enough for two lanes of traffic to run easily and safely through the tubes. The tunnel was designed by Travers Morgan & Partners, with the assistance of Christiani & Nielsen.

The contractor, a Costain and Tarmac joint venture, used buoyancy devices to float the tubular sections out into the estuary. They were then lowered into their final positions, in a trench across the bed of the estuary. Digging and reinforcing that trench was one of the most challenging aspects of the contract. There was also significant work to create the approach ramps down to the tunnel at each end, and the cut and cover sections at each portal.

The tunnel cost more than £140m to construct. Queen Elizabeth II officially opened it on 25 October 1991. The basin where the tunnel sections had been cast subsequently became Conwy Marina

The following comment courtesy of Clydebrae:

This is a big ship for Preston and a truly world wide trader compared to the majority of vessels which visited the port, designed for, and involved in, the coasting, Baltic and Mediterranean trades.

Despite her exotic name, she was registered in Liverpool, having been built in 1954 for the Larrinaga Steamship Company Ltd. As their name implies, they had a Spanish background, Ramon de Larrinaga having moved to Liverpool in 1862.

With a beam of 59ft 8ins she was close to the limits, and would have been too deep to arrive with full deadwight cargo.

I suspect she arrived with timber - most likely from Eastern Canada - and may well have first discharged at Garston, on the Mersey, to reduce her draught to match the restrictions at Preston.

Larrinaga were well known tramp shipowners but by the 1950's life was becoming difficult, traditional cargoes such as coal for export being in terminal decline. This vessel was the first of a newbuilding programme, delivered in 1954, and she was designed to be attractive to the established liner companies, having tween decks, deep tanks for the carriage of limited quantities of liquids, and a good range of 10 ton derricks and one capable of lifting 25tons

She traded worldwide and one of her claims to fame was to be the first seagoing vessel to berth at Duluth, Lake Superior after the opening of the St Lawrence Seaway. This was on 28th May 1959.

Kinshasa residents wait in line to receive medical and dental care at the Humanitarian Civic Action site Sept. 14, 2010. Approximately 2,000 residents were seen over a four-day period of MEDFLAG 10, a joint medical exercise between the U.S. military and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo aimed at providing humanitarian assistance to the local people.

Crowds gathered, some with pre-registered tickets in hand, others with just a hope of being seen by a healthcare professional in Kinshasa Sept. 9.

“I saw a crowd of people and asked what was going on,” said Ousmane Kalotho Mutuala, a Kinshasa resident. “When they told me it was for medical care, I immediately went and got my friend who can barely see because his eyes are so bad and came back to try and get in.”

The lines started forming hours before the humanitarian civic action site opened its doors for medical and dental care to the residents of Kinshasa. Residents that had tickets were registered in advance, ensuring they would be seen on a certain date. Even though some residents, like Mutuala, did not have tickets, medical providers saw them.

“Unfortunately there is a much bigger demand then what we have assets for,” said Maj. Curt Kroh of Washburn, N.D., a physician assistant with the North Dakota National Guard’s 814th Army Support Medical Company, which is based in Bismarck. “However, we stayed until we ran out of time and material.”

Kroh is taking part in MEDFLAG 10, a joint medical exercise that allows U.S. military medical personnel and their Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) counterparts to work side by side while providing humanitarian assistance to Kinshasa residents.

Approximately 25 FARDC and U.S. medical and dental personnel, and an additional 50 support staff, provided services. Over a four-day period, FARDC and U.S. medical personnel provided assistance to approximately 2,000 Congolese.

Patients were treated for various illnesses ranging from high blood pressure to malaria. The most common problem encountered was residents with eye problems, because they have never been examined, said Kroh. In addition to medical attention, dentists provided care ranging from basic oral hygiene to tooth extraction.

“The bulk of the medical care that was provided in the exam rooms was by FARDC doctors,” said Kroh. “The FARDC doctors are very well involved in the treatment of the local population.”

While all residents could not be seen and all problems could not be treated, residents were entered into the medical system and given referral letters for follow-up care.

The United States Department of Agriculture donated commodities such as The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), are just some of the many sources that make up the more than 44 million pounds of food that flow in and out of the warehouse of the San Antonio Food Bank (SAFB) they package and palletize them for fast distribution from its San Antonio, TX., headquarters, on Monday, October 31, 2011. SAFB is a non-profit organization that serves as a clearinghouse by receiving and storing truckloads of donated food, produce, and other grocery products, they then distributes these items to over 500 service agencies that help people in need.

“We couldn’t do what we do without our partnership with USDA’” said President and CEO Eric Cooper. He continues, “We are privileged in partnering (with the USDA) to feeding kids, through the summer, with the Summer Food Service Program, and throughout the year, with the Child and Adult Care Feeding Program (CACFP). Then in our approach to feeding seniors, we partner with USDA in the Commodities Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), and the Senior Farmer’s Market (Nutrition) Program. And then work to bring all our (needy) parties together with our Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Outreach. You know, once families have access to food we believe it is important to educate them. Through the support of the SNAP-Education Program we are able to educate them during their time of need. With this comprehensive approach we are really able to get the right food, at the right amount, at the right time, to needy families throughout our community – which allows us to feed the fifty-eight thousand we do, each week.”

SAFB serves 16 counties in Southwest Texas and states, “Nearly one out of every four children and one out of every five adults in Southwest Texas lives in poverty and has difficulty meeting basic nutritional needs.” According to SAFB, sixty-five percent of the people requesting emergency food have children. “Additionally, the senior citizens and those living on a fixed income generally have limited funds for a consistent grocery budget.”

San Antonio is the seventh largest city in the nation with surrounding farms and ranches near its rivers and water supplies. When available they provide fresh surplus produce. Other commodities come from the food industry and manufacturers. The major food brand companies that for various reasons have surplus commodities donate it to SAFB.

Texas farmers supply fresh produce to their Fresh Produce Program.

Public donations come in the form of money, food, volunteer time, and advocacy.

Their fleet of trucks pickup and deliver food as needed.

Oil slicks in the sea disable many fairy penguins in our Southern Ocean. They are washed ashore, disabled and cleaned by volunteers. While their natural oils readjust, these very small pullovers prevent them over-preening. Go well little birds.

Congolese citizens sit in a makeshift waiting room to see medical staff of the U.S. military and Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo during a humanitarian and civic assistance outreach program Sept. 14, 2010, in Kinshasa, DRC.

U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. Kassidy Snyder

U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. Kassidy Snyder

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Friedrich Merz, Chairman of the Christian Democratic Union party and Leader of the CDU/CSU opposition faction in the German Bundestag.

“I want to thank you for your support. Germany's assistance is very serious – the second largest in the world after the United States. In total, financial support for our army, along with humanitarian aid, amounts to approximately 37 billion euros. We are deeply grateful for this. We believe that this assistance will not stop, and that Germany will continue supporting Ukraine. We look forward to stronger, more decisive actions of Germany from you personally,” the Head of State said.

The President praised the friendly relations between Ukraine and the Federal Republic of Germany. It was particularly proven by recent negotiations with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Kyiv and the meeting with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Paris.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Friedrich Merz discussed increased funding for military assistance to Ukraine for the coming year. This assistance is vital for defending lives in Ukraine. The country faces daily Russian attacks, and every act of support saves lives. Increased assistance also directly strengthens Ukraine's position in achieving a just and lasting peace.

One of the key topics of the meeting was the Victory Plan. Both sides agreed that Ukraine could benefit from enhanced long-range capabilities and a secured invitation to NATO, noting that achieving a just peace would have a significant impact on global security.

They also discussed Ukraine’s integration into the EU, ensuring unity in Europe, and its role in strengthening Ukraine. The President supported the CDU Leader’s idea of creating a Contact Group involving Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Poland to work towards restoring a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested that Denmark be included in this group.

Special attention was paid to the issue of Ukrainians who fled to Germany because of the full-scale Russian invasion. The Head of State announced that the visit of the Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of National Unity of Ukraine, Oleksiy Chernyshov, to Berlin is already planned.

Friedrich Merz highlighted that Germany is engaged in intensive discussions on military assistance details and the types of weapons to be provided to Ukraine, but there is a fundamental consensus on the necessity of providing assistance to end the war and establish a just peace.

“Our faction’s position is clear: we aim to enable your Armed Forces to strike military bases — not civilian populations or infrastructure, but the precise targets from which the war against your country is being waged. I addressed this in the Bundestag a few weeks ago. By imposing such range restrictions, we are effectively compelling you to fight with one hand tied behind your back,” he emphasized.

Pallets of FEMA and USDA Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) commodities are unloaded at the Houston Food Bank commodity warehouse and stored on shelves until needed on packing lines or delivery to food pantries for those in need, in Houston, TX, on September 22, 2017.

Houston Food Bank Operations Associate Director Marly Maskill provided the following information; in general, the food bank usually receives approximately 10 trucks per day and distributes approximately 230,000 meals per day; in response to Hurricane Harvey, the food bank has been receiving approximately 30 trucks per day and distributing approximately 500,000 meals per day.

Maskill continues, “FY17 we received over 23.7M lbs of USDA Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) commodities. Their products are mostly shelf stable commodity items, but also frozen meat, produce, eggs & cheese. We distribute this product to our agencies directly & in our backpacks & share your holiday boxes. In response to Harvey, the USDA allowed us to use the TEFAP product we already had in inventory to support disaster relief. Any client who is not on disaster SNAP is eligible to receive this product. The USDA has been actively communicating & working with us to make sure our needs have been met. They've also committed to replenishing the product that is distributed for disaster response so our clients who generally receive this product don't have to go without.”
