We traveled about 12 miles out on Spencer Flat Road and then hiked over 8 miles round trip on sand and slick rock to go see this: the Cosmic Ashtray. It's a huge sandstone bowl filled with sand with a large plug of rock in the middle. The bowl is 200 feet wide and 60 feet deep. The dome in the middle is 35 feet tall.

A solid silver ashtray (hall mark 925) hand crafted and bought in Peru. Amazing detail especially the Inca inspired face in the centre.

Happy Crazy Tuesday.

a very cool ashtray, love the colors and the textures :)

nothing but what you see. in front of my window, by night, a spider made its web on my ashtray. things like this make me smile, i don't even know why. maybe, because is life. maybe because it's changing. small things. how i love small things!

We hiked around 9 miles up and down, up and down over and around steep slick rock slopes to get to this huge wind carved bowl in a sandstone ridge. The woman on the left was taking selfies in many different poses when we arrived. After she finally sat down, I began taking photos of the scene. She leapt up and ran out to the edge of the bowl and began posing! She assumed I wanted her in my images! She was attractive, but I didn't hike all the way out to this amazing formation for her, so I put my camera away and began eating lunch. Finally, she left followed by her entourage.

The bowl is about 200 feet across and the rock in the middle is about 35 feet tall. The bowl is filled with orange sand.

Yesterday I was dirty, wanted to be pretty

I know now that I'm forever dirt

To Eartha Kitsch, a fine photographer, a stylish lady, an amazing storyteller, and a Southern-hospitable friend to Flickr orphans everywhere. I hope you have a terrific birthday, with lots of vim!

This is 200 foot wide and 60 foot deep pit in the sandstone filled with orange sand. The sand shifts around with the wind from year to year sometimes nearly covering the brainrock cone. When we arrived there was a group of about 15 very noisy people perched on the other side. A few of them descended the moki steps which you can faintly see below them.

We visited the Cosmic Ashtray, an enormous sandstone bowl filled with coral sand and a big cone of brain rock.

Backstory:

smoking is bad for your health but ashtrays can be items of art

I think it is time for a daylight shot or my followers will think that I only live at night...

This is structure is called Cosmic Astray or Escalante Volcano, but I perfer to call it the Eye of Earth.

I took this shot when I arrived at this remote location after a long and sternous hike. If you are interested in the whole story, check the caption of my nightscape image: flic.kr/p/W6brbo

reasons to keep smoking:

● That lighter comes in handy for birthday candles.

● If not for the smoking you'd be perfect, and nobody likes a perfect person.
