Michael Rawling’s Elemental Series: Miami uses Film and Found Materials at the pictures’ location to create a new types of land- & cityscapes.
Liquid, organic and mineral samples are collected at the site of the photograph - from the very place depicted within the photograph - and bonded with the film over 6-12 months: the resulting image created more deeply representative of the world we experience.

Michael Rawling’s Elemental Series uses traditional film combined with Found Materials at every photograph’s location to create a new way of representing the landscape.

How do you do this??
Tiny amounts of water, windfall organic and mineral samples are collected from the very landscape depicted within each picture - and chemically bonded with the film over ~12 months. The result: a developed film and unedited, printed images that are somewhere between a classic photographs & a totally abstract image, depicting the interaction between fundamental chemical elements present at each place & time, representing a more visceral and literal experience of being present in landscapes in a constant state of natural or unnatural flux.

One of my favorite places to go on walks is along a nature trail in Lake Anne, in Reston, Virginia. There’s an abundance of nature in the area, and along the trail, which provides a brief respite from the bustling urbanization of nearby Reston Town Center. As humans, we tend to give human qualities to things that aren’t human, like animals, cars, architecture, and in this case, trees. This one had a peaceful, humble quality about it, as it appeared to be bowing quietly in a small clearing in the woods, basking in rays of sunlight randomly piercing the forest canopy. I stopped and took notice of this tree during a particularly stressful time in my life, and perhaps it was a subtle reminder to slow down and breathe more often. #tree #trees #art #artwork #drawing #watercolor #nature #natureart #dmvartist #loudouncountyartist #loudounart #artistoninstagram

The resulting raw photograph, sometimes figurative, sometimes totally abstract or somewhere in between, is more throughly representative of our real, visceral experience of the elements and our changing landscape.
