Michael Rawling’s Elemental Series uses Film, and Found Materials at each photograph’s location to create a new type of Landscape artwork.

Tiny amounts of water, organic and mineral samples are collected at the site of the photograph, from the very landscape depicted within the picture - and chemically bonded with the film over 9-12 months. The resulting raw photograph, sometimes figurative, sometimes totally abstract or somewhere in between, is more throughly representative of our real, visceral experience of the elements and our changing landscape.

This kwanzan cherry tree grows behind my friend Allen’s little bookstore, Books and Other Found Things, in Leesburg, Virginia. In addition to selling used books, Allen was interested in selling and supporting the work of local artists and crafters, and he was one of the first people to help me sell and exhibit my Splotch Monster Island work to the public. I even did my first Splotch Monster-making demo during an April First Friday event, about eight years ago under this tree. For this model, I used a striped pattern paper and I liked some parts of the stripes more than others. The parts where the units intersect look like flowers .❤️ 紙はストライプ色がきれいで、こういうふうにアレンジしました。ちょっと変わったかも知れません。(笑)⭐
