My plan to photograph a Dennis Dart passing this daisy scuplture on the Monksmoor estate did not go to plan. First I was bowled by a construction lorry, and my second attempt was thwarted by two vans following each other. I did manage a shot of one of the buses at the bus stop, but at that point the whole composition was buggered.
This is a "First Day of Issue" envelope, also known as a First Day Cover, commemorating the "Old Glory" stamp issued on January 9, 1963, in Washington, D.C. - The stamp on this cover is the 5-cent "Old Glory" stamp, which was part of the Prominent Americans series. The artistic design on the left side of the envelope is known as a "cachet" and was created by Boerger. Alfred "Al" Boerger (1911–2001) was a stamp dealer from Toledo, Ohio, who created and sold "A.B.C." cachets for first day covers. The "A.B.C." stood for "Alfred Boerger Cachets". Boerger hired a designer, Alton Weigel, to draw up designs for his cachets, which were sold through his business and were precursors to the Artopages brand of cachets.
U.S. (#1208) - 1963-66 5¢ 50-Star Flag
Issue Date: January 9, 1963
City: Washington, D.C.
Quantity: 3,066,890,000
Printed By: Bureau of Engraving and Printing
Printing Method: Giori Press
Perforations: 11
Color: Blue and red
U.S. (#1208) was the first stamp to meet the increased 5¢ domestic letter rate. Featuring the American Flag, it is also the only U.S. definitive or commemorative stamp not to have any lettering at all on it, although it does show the denomination that went into effect two days before it was issued. This stamp is one of the few U.S. stamps that doesn’t note the country that issued it, although the image of the flag makes it clear. Earlier in the year, Postmaster General J. Edward Day had noted that “only precedent” suggested that “U.S.,” or “U.S.A.,” or some other sign of nationality should be included.

2. Neil Simon - Marvin Neil Simon (July 4, 1927 – August 26, 2018) was an American playwright, screenwriter and author. He wrote more than 30 plays and nearly the same number of movie screenplays, mostly film adaptations of his plays. He received three Tony Awards and a Golden Globe Award, as well as nominations for four Academy Awards and four Primetime Emmy Awards. He was awarded a Special Tony Award in 1975, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1991, the Kennedy Center Honors in 1995 and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2006. Simon grew up in New York City during the Great Depression. His parents' financial difficulties affected their marriage, giving him a mostly unhappy and unstable childhood. He often took refuge in movie theaters, where he enjoyed watching early comedians like Charlie Chaplin. After graduating from high school and serving a few years in the Army Air Force Reserve, he began writing comedy scripts for radio programs and popular early television shows. Among the latter were Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows (where in 1950 he worked alongside other young writers including Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, Larry Gelbart and Selma Diamond), and The Phil Silvers Show, which ran from 1955 to 1959. His first produced play was Come Blow Your Horn (1961). It took him three years to complete and ran for 678 performances on Broadway. It was followed by two more successes, Barefoot in the Park (1963) and The Odd Couple (1965). He won a Tony Award for the latter. It made him a national celebrity and "the hottest new playwright on Broadway". From the 1960s to the 1980s, he wrote for stage and screen; some of his screenplays were based on his own works for the stage. His style ranged from farce to romantic comedy to more serious dramatic comedy. Overall, he garnered 17 Tony nominations and won three awards. In 1966, he had four successful productions running on Broadway at the same time and, in 1983, he became the only living playwright to have a New York theatre, the Neil Simon Theatre, named in his honor. 4. Michael Crichton - John Michael Crichton (October 23, 1942 – November 4, 2008) was an American author, screenwriter and filmmaker. His books have sold over 200 million copies worldwide, and over a dozen have been adapted into films. His literary works heavily feature technology and are usually within the science fiction, techno-thriller, and medical fiction genres. Crichton's novels often explore human technological advancement and attempted dominance over nature, both with frequently catastrophic results; many of his works are cautionary tales, especially regarding themes of biotechnology. Several of his stories center on themes of genetic modification, hybridization, paleontology and/or zoology. Many feature medical or scientific underpinnings, reflective of his own medical training. Crichton received an MD from Harvard Medical School in 1969 but did not practice medicine, choosing to focus on his writing instead. Initially writing under a pseudonym, he eventually published 25 novels in his lifetime, including: The Andromeda Strain (1969), The Terminal Man (1972), The Great Train Robbery (1975), Congo (1980), Sphere (1987), Jurassic Park (1990), Rising Sun (1992), Disclosure (1994), The Lost World (1995), Airframe (1996), Timeline (1999), Prey (2002), State of Fear (2004), and Next (2006). Four more novels, in various states of completion, were published after his death in 2008. Crichton was also involved in the film and television industry. In 1973, he wrote and directed Westworld, the first film to use 2D computer-generated imagery. He also directed Coma (1978), The First Great Train Robbery (1978), Looker (1981), and Runaway (1984). He was the creator of the television series ER (1994–2009), and several of his novels were adapted into films, most notably the Jurassic Park franchise. 5. Allen Drury - Allen Stuart Drury (September 2, 1918 – September 2, 1998) was an American novelist. During World War II, he was a reporter in the Senate, closely observing Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman, among others. He would convert these experiences into his first novel Advise and Consent, for which he won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1960. Long afterwards, it was still being praised as ‘the definitive Washington tale’. His diaries from this period were published as A Senate Journal 1943–45. Drury lived in Tiburon, California, from 1964 until his death. He completed his 20th novel, Public Men, just two weeks before his death. He died of cardiac arrest on September 2, 1998, his 80th birthday, at St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco, California. Visiting Kungsträdgården metro station was the first stop on our guided city tour of Stockholm. While the station is known for its unique and artistic design, part of Stockholm's "art gallery" metro system, I tried to capture some pictures that could potentially fit into my monochrome project: "Urban Serendipity." Kungsträdgården, opened in 1977, is located near Kungsträdgården Park, close to the Grand Hotel. The station’s design reflects the area’s history, featuring plant motifs, sculptures, and relics from the baroque gardens that once existed nearby. It’s designed to resemble an archaeological dig site, with columns and other elements from the park’s past. As a central station on the blue line, it offers easy access to key attractions like the Royal Palace and Gamla Stan and is very close to the Grand Hotel Stockholm - Stockholm, Sweden.

City Reflections...
Last Wednesday we made our way to Mississauga to get some architectural photos of some of the unique new buildings that are being built. Mississauga council has attracted some very artistic design firms to build the infrastructure giving them incentives to create unique one of a kind structures for the city as it expands and grows. .
I was captured by the reflections in these buildings... I thought this would make for a very interesting image. I did a little creative editing of the perspective in Photoshop to bend the horizon line just a bit . I hope you like it! .
Thank you for visiting for marking my photo as a favorite and for the kind comments,
Please do not copy my image or use it on websites, blogs or other media without my express permission.

"Lightning of the Frost" For those who missed my work - a new photo which I took this winter. I have always been fascinated by the shapes and textures of ice. The surface of this ice, which reminds me all those lightnings I have seen in the sky last year. Nature always brings surprises, paintings that just need to be captured properly... ;) I took this picture with a drone. Textures you see - ice cracks on the surface of the lake.

Excerpt from www.dundasstunitedchurch.ca/catalog.html:
Dundas Street United Church is located in the west end of Woodstock, as city of 34 000 people. Woodstock is located in the heart of South Western Ontario, at the junction of highways 401 and 403, 50 km east of London and 60 km west of Kitchener.
Woodstock is the largest municipality in Oxford County, a county known for its rich farmland, and for its dairy and cash crop farming. As well as being “The Dairy Capital of Canada”, Woodstock also has a large industrial base, much of which is related to the auto manufacturing industry.
The church, built in 1889, is a red brick building artistically designed with a slate roof. The seating capacity of the sanctuary is approximately 300.
The stained-glass windows in the sanctuary were restored in 1985. The sanctuary is graced with a pipe organ, grand piano and a good sound system featuring wireless for the hearing impaired.
The hall on the lower level consists of Sunday School classrooms, three washrooms, nursery, lounge, stage, furnace room and newly renovated kitchen (2005).
In 1993, the Christian Education Building was built, joined onto the existing church building using the same type of brick. This building is two stories, with the upper floor consisting of the minister’s study, secretary’s office, boardroom, church parlour with library, small kitchen fully equipped, furnace room and two washrooms. The lower floor has a multi-functional room that is used for congregational meetings, banquets, luncheons and other activities which may include community-based events. This building is air-conditioned and summer church worship services are held in the multi-functional room.
Our church has an elevator and is wheelchair accessible. The well-lit paved parking lot has designated parking spaces for handicapped parking. There is a security system for the entire building and a central vacuum system.
It is always fun to watch the firework displays and capturing them with photography brings a double joy as you see the time lapse patterns that make each fraction of a second a new artistic design. I might take two hundred shots and keep five but that is ok.
The best part of the show is listening to the oohs and ahhs of people, parents and children.

The artistic design of the interior in the ornamental style of the rococo has a rousing effect on today's viewer. The overpowering is a planned effect: the splendor of the church should convince the believers of the greatness of God. Heaven and the Hereafter are literally brought down to earth, so that the believer can not only guess, but visually see them.
The new St. Martin's church windows were installed in 2009, artistic design of the colourful three-dimensionality: Graham Jones, England, pictorial representation of the biblical narrative: Patrick Reyntiens, England. The church was largely destroyed in the war and then rebuilt in the early 50s. The Reyntiens/Jones windows illustrate biblical stories. The detail and clarity is extraordinary and we spent well over an hour looking at them. If you want to see the work of one of the great exponents of stained glass of the 20th century, then you should look at these windows. This panel tells the story of Jonah and the Whale.

The Juristische Bibliothek (Law Library) in Munich's Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) is a stunning example of neo-Gothic architecture, completed in 1906. This historic library features intricate woodwork, elegant spiral staircases, and ornate iron railings. Its collection is primarily focused on legal literature, supporting administrative and judicial work in Munich, and is open to the public by appointment or guided tours. The library’s design, with its magnificent details and artistic ambiance, makes it a cultural treasure and a popular location for filming and photography.

In the center of the pilgrimage to Kevelaer is the Gnadenkapelle , which houses the grave image of Kevelaer.
The chapel was built in 1654 around a statue. This statue had been created by a man named Hendrick Busman, who had been passing over the place where, during the Thirty Years' War, during the Christmas season of 1641, he had paused to pray at a crossroads. Above him the heavens shall be opened, and he shall have heard and understood the Mother of God. Three times he should have heard the call "At this point you should build me a chapel!". After his wife had a vision of a holy house with a mercy image, Hendrick Busman built a sacrificial enclosure over the imagestock as a "protective enclosure". Later, the Gnadenkapelle was erected. [
The Gnadenkapelle is a hexagonal dome structure, which has a large portal-like window opening on the side of the Gnadenbild. The artistic design of the chapel was begun only in 1888 and completed four years later.
Specks Hof is located in the center of Leipzig and is the oldest preserved shopping arcade. The history of the trade fair and trading house dates back to about 1430. In 1815 the businessman and entrepreneur Maximilian Speck von Sternburg bought the house and gave it his name. During the Second World War, the roof structures of the building complex were badly damaged. Only in the years 1981 and 1982, the historic passage was redeveloped and restored in the years from 1993 to 1995.
The attraction of the passage reopened in 1995 is the three atriums, which were artistically designed by the painters Bruno Griesel, Moritz Götze and Johannes Grützke.
Excerpt from Wikipedia:
Specks Hof is a commercial building with the oldest preserved shopping arcade in Leipzig . The complex near Nikolaikirche is an example of Leipzig's trade fair and trading houses built at the beginning of the 20th century.
Specks Hof extends for 82 meters along the Schuhmachergäßchen between Reichs - and Nikolaistraße in which the building has front lengths of 40 or 47 meters. To the south, it borders the Reichshof , the Hansahaus and the postwar new construction with the Fürstenerker.
Bacon's yard is six storeys high. In the first three upper floors, the principle of the column-and-rail system can be clearly recognized by emphasizing the continuous pilasters . The upper two floors are slightly set behind a balustrade or a narrow roof strip. In each of the three adjacent streets is a bow-arched passage entrance, each of which as well as the two building corners is emphasized by a rounded Risalit . At the front, which is clad with trachyttuff and cast stone, there are plenty of architectural ornaments in stone as well as on the pedestal above the ground floor and above the third floor in copper. The figures are borrowed from the Greek world of the gods and have no relation to the purpose of the building.
The southern part, later developed as part of the front in the Nikolaistraße, deviates in its design from the rest of the building. It is kept simpler and has a pyramid roof.
The ground floor of the building is traversed by barrel-vaulted passages, some of which are still embossed with copper. The corridors are interrupted by three glass-covered atriums, which are beginning in the west, designated A, B and C and have floor areas between 40 and 50 m². Their walls are artistically designed.
In the yard A 33 white terracotta plates by Peter Makolies (1936) are attached. Above the fourth floor is an image frieze by the Leipzig painter Bruno Griesel (1960) with the theme "Psychology of Time". In courtyard B are a design on Meißner tiles by the Leipzig painter Heinz -Jürgen Böhme (1952). Above this rises more than 20,000 colored ceramic plates over several floors of the wall frieze by Moritz Götze (1964) "The Morning, the Noon, the Evening". Lichthof C is decorated with 16 medallions depicting everyday objects, mainly shoes, in an enamel glaze technique by Johannes Grützke (1937-2017). In the stairwells of the atriums A and B are still original lead glass panes after designs by the painter Paul Horst-Schulze (1876-1937) available.
While offices are located on the upper floors, the ground floor is fully occupied by retail establishments, including two catering establishments, many of which can also be accessed via the passages and the courtyards.
Stingray Sculpture - George Town, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands
Info: The Stingray Sculpture is the central piece of a fountain erected in front of the Bayshore Mall located on South Church Street in George Town, Grand Cayman. This 1.5 ton, twelve foot tall sculpture depicts three artistically designed stingrays flying out of the water. The fountain was commissioned by Kirk Freeport Plaza Ltd. of George Town, for the enjoyment of both residents and of course the many thousands of tourists that come to the Cayman islands and often see and enjoy the beautiful creatures in the flesh too.
The statue was designed and constructed by Dale Evers of Dale Evers Studios in Morro Bay, California. Construction took over one and a half years and Mr Evers inspiration for the sculpture came in part from diving at Stingray City among the fascinating marine creatures, off the shores of Grand Cayman. > www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WMV4YM_Stingray_Sculpture_Geo...

__________ 1929 Auburn 8-120 Boattail Speedster__________
The ornamentation, as noted is a cross between or an eclectic mix of what might be called; “neo- Art Nouveau Art Deco classic”………..or in other words, “Appleman’s concoction”.
Art Nouveau An artistic movement borne in Europe around 1890 lasting until around 1910. A artistic style highlighted by curvaceous lines, often inspired by plants and flowers, as well as geometric patterns. It took on many different characteristics in different places, and some of the most famous designers from the era have disparate styles, including Antoni Gaudi in Barcelona, Josef Hoffmann in Vienna and Carlo Bugatti in Italy. And let us not forget internationally recognized artist, Alphonse Mucha, (24 July 1860 – 14 July 1939) a Czech painter, illustrator and graphic artist (one of whose work has been used as the backdrop for this artwork).
____________ The evolution of artistic design _____________
Art Deco Coming of age in the 1920’s - The “Roaring Twenties” representative of a period of social, artistic, cultural, and economic dynamism. “The Lindy Hop” and “The Lost Generation”. The economy was good - times were good. Money and despite the 13th Amendment (Prohibition) booze and dance clubs flowed across America and Europe. An era of bootlegging, gambling and mobsters.
The 20’s also ushered in a fruitful period for the arts, music, and writing. Popular among designers and architects, Art Deco threaded its way into every aspect of design, from women’s fashions, furniture style, architectural elements and yes, even automotive design. Art Deco went in bold new directions, and jazz music became all the rage. In literature, two popular movements or groups of writers arose: The Lost Generation and the Harlem Renaissance.
American literary notables who lived in Paris at the time, including Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Gertrude Stein - expatriate authors who wrote novels and short stories expressing their resentment toward the materialism and individualism that was rampant during the era.
________________ The Bottom Falls Out ________________
October 24th, 1929 - “Black Tuesday,” Nervous investors began selling overpriced shares en masse, the stock market crash that some had feared eventually happened. A record 12.9 million shares were traded that day, known as “Black Tuesday.”
Five days later, on October 29th - “Black Thursday,” some 16 million shares were traded after another wave of panic swept Wall Street. Millions of shares ended up worthless, and those investors who had bought stocks “on margin” (with borrowed money) were wiped out completely.
Seemingly in the blink of an eye, millions of Americans were thrown into financial turmoil. Forced to buy on credit many Americans fell into debt, and the number of foreclosures and repossessions climbed steadily. The global adherence to the gold standard, which joined countries around the world in a fixed currency exchange, helped spread economic woes from the United States throughout the world, especially Europe.
No longer was the average citizen concerned with artistic style or design. They were much more concerned with; where is their next loaf of bread coming from. And more to the point - the automobile industry, many car manufacturers struggled to make ends meet. Many manufacturers had no choice. They were forced to “close their doors”, go out of business and file bankruptcy………or simply walk away and take their losses. Auburn Automobile Company struggled on until 1935 but due to its weakened financial condition finally succumbed to the pressures of E.L. Cord - Cord Automobile Company who took control of Auburn’s assets in what amounted to a “leveraged buyout”.
Afterword: Don’t be misled. The “crash” of 1929 did not wipe out everyone. Many enterprising wealthy businessmen made “millions” off the misfortunes of others. Millionaires became overnight billionaires.
Priced at under $2,000 the 1929 Auburn 8-120 Boattail Speedster was a bargain……… for some. A comparable Stutz cost nearly $5,000. The pictured car brought a healthy $341,000 USD at Hersey, Pennsylvania auction in 2019. RM Soheby’s

The ground floor of the building is characterised by barrel-vaulted passageways, some of which still have embossed copper ceilings. The corridors are interrupted by three glass-roofed atriums, which were artistically designed.
