Lustheim Palace with the Grand Canal at Schleissheim Park, Oberschleissheim near Munich, Bavaria
Some background information:
Schleissheim Palace, which is located in the municipality of Oberschleissheim near Munich in Upper Bavaria, actually comprises three palaces in a grand baroque park. It used to be a summer residence of the Wittelsbach dynasty, the then rulers of Bavaria. Nowadays Schleissheim Palace and Park belong to the most significant and best-preserved baroque grounds throughout Germany.
The history of Schleissheim Palace started in 1598 with a renaissance country house and hermitage founded by William V, Duke of Bavaria. The central gate with its clock tower which leads to the inner courtyard, the so-called Maximilianshof, still dates back to the first building period. Under William's son Maximilian I the buildings were extended between 1617 and 1623, while the rooms were decorated by the Dutch architect Peter Candid.
After heavy destruction in the Second World War the palace with its spacious buildings was reconstructed. Most of the stucco decoration of the chapel has been preserved. Today the Old Schleissheim Palace houses two exhibitions, one on religious culture, the other on the history of Prussia. The Grand Hall in the middle of the main building serves as a foyer for the two museums.
Lustheim Palace was the second chateau to be built in the extensive park landscape of Schleissheim. Its architect was the Italian Enrico Zuccalli who constructed it between 1684 and 1688 as a garden villa in Italian style on behalf of Maximilian II Emanuel, Elector of Bavaria, and his first wife, the Austrian princess Maria Antonia.
Lustheim Palace lies on an island at the eastern end of the park and forms as a point de vue the conclusion of the baroque court garden. It once was the centre point of a semicircle of round buildings. Two pavillons still exist, the northern and the southern one on both sides of the palace. In the southern pavilion Zuccalli erected the Renatus Chapel in 1686, whilst the northern pavillon housed a decorated stable which was built for the favourite horses of Maximilian II Emanuel.
The interior of Lustheim Palace is dominated by the large banqueting hall in the middle of the building. It is flanked laterally by the apartments of the elector and electress. The upstairs rooms were simple for the servants, whilst the basement contained the kitchen and utility rooms.
Since 1968 the palace houses a great collection of Meissen porcelain, only outranged by the collection in the Zwinger in Dresden.
The youngest and also largest of the three palaces by far is New Schleissheim Palace. Zuccalli erected this baroque palace along the lines of French architecture amidst the other two palaces between 1701 and 1704 as the new residence, since the elector expected the imperial crown.
But after Maximilian II Emanuel had lost Bavaria for some years in the War of the Spanish Succession, having to go into exile, the construction work was interrupted. It was the German architect Joseph Effner, who finally enlarged the building to one of the most impressive baroque palaces between 1719 and 1726. However only the main wing was completed, which nevertheless is quite impressive. The other three planned wings didn’t go up due to the building owner’s increasingly desperate financial situation.
New Schleissheim Palace is a wide-bearing construction of more than 300 meters in length. The main building, the corps de logis, is divided by 37 garden-sided window bays. Eleven axes fall on the middle section with the grand staircase, the ballroom and the gallery. This section is structured with pilasters. The main wing is connected by arcades with two pavilions in the south and in the north. The southern pavilion should serve as a guest house, whilst the northern one keeps the pumping station for the trick fountains of the baroque park.
Most of the rooms still show their original late baroque decoration, celebrating Maximilian II Emanuel’s victories against the Turks. The entirely preserved Gobelin tapestries were acquired by the elector from Flemish manufactures, when he was serving as the Governor of the Spanish Netherlands.
Maximilian II Emanuels's son Emperor Charles VII Albert preferred the more private atmosphere of Nymphenburg Palace. That’s why – just like his father – he also didn’t complete the other three planned wings. But Maximilian II Emanuel's grandson Maximilian III Joseph ordered to decorate some rooms in rococo style. In 1763 the German sculptor and woodcarver Ignaz Günther equipped them with allegorical adornments. Under King Ludwig I the famous German architect Leo von Klenze finally completed the great stairway. However Klenze's neoclassical alterations of the façade were not restored with the renovation after the destructions in World War II.
Today the gallery of baroque paintings owned by the Bavarian State Picture Collections is exhibited in several rooms. Among the artists are Flemish Baroque painters such as Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck.
Schleissheim Park is one of the rare preserved baroque gardens in Germany. Its structure with canals and bosquet area was arranged by Zuccalli. Dominique Girard, a student of the French landscape architect André Le Nôtre, constructed the grand parterre and the cascade until 1720. Since then water forms the central element in the garden. The Grand Canal in the garden center and the ditch round of Lustheim island are part of the northern Munich channel system, a system of waterways, which also connected Schleissheim Palace with the complex of Nymphenburg Palace.
The Grand Canal, which leads to Lustheim Palace at the eastern end of the garden, was laid out at the end of the 18th century. Before that time there used to be an alley at this place, which served as a track for the then rather popular "paille-maille" game. By contrast the canal itself served as a waterway for Venetian-style gondolas, which brought the court ladies and aristocrats, who weren't keen on walking, from New Schleissheim to Lustheim Palace and back again. If you look closely, you can see such a gondola lashed up in front of the chateau.
By the way, Schleissheim Palace has been used as a location for several notable motion pictures, for example "The Three Musketeers" featuring Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom, Matthew Macfadyen and Christoph Waltz.
The baroque park and all three palaces are open to the public, whereby the admission to the park is actually free.

An important thing to remember is that even though pixel sizes keep getting smaller and smaller, the technology is advancing, so the smaller pixels are more efficient at collecting light. For instance, the Sony A7rII is back-illuminated which allows more photons to hit the sensor. Semiconductor technology is always advancing, so the brilliant engineers are always improving the signal/noise ratio. Far higher pixel counts, as well as better dynamic ranger, are thus not only possible, but the future!

View your artistic mission into photography as an epic odyssey of heroic poetry! Take it from Homer in Homer's Odyssey: "Tell me, O muse, of that ingenious hero who travelled far and wide after he had sacked the famous town of Troy. Many cities did he visit, and many were the nations with whose manners and customs he was acquainted; moreover he suffered much by sea while trying to save his own life and bring his men safely home; but do what he might he could not save his men, for they perished through their own sheer folly in eating the cattle of the Sun-god Hyperion; so the god prevented them from ever reaching home. Tell me, too, about all these things, O daughter of Jove, from whatsoever source you may know them. " --Samuel Butler Translation of Homer's Odyssey

Artificial Flowers
Bobby Darin
Alone in the world was poor little Anne
As sweet a young child as you'd find
Her parents had gone to their final reward
Leavin' their baby behind
(Did you hear?)
This poor little child was only nine years of age
When mother and dad went away
Still she bravely worked
At the one thing she knew
To earn her few pennies a day
She made artificial flowers, artificial flowers
Flowers for ladies of fashion to wear
She made artificial flowers you know those artificial flowers
Fashions from Annie's despair
With paper and shears with some wire and wax
She made up each tulip and mum
As snowflakes drifted into her tenement room
Her baby little fingers grew numb
From makin' artificial flowers those artificial flowers
Flowers for ladies of high fashion to wear
She made artificial flowers artificial flowers
Made from Annie's despair
They found little Annie all covered in ice
Still clutchin' her poor frozen shears
Amidst all the blossoms she had fashioned by hand
And watered with all her young tears
There must be a heaven where little Annie can play
In heavenly gardens and bowers
And instea-a-ad of a halo she'll wear 'round her head
A garland of genuine flowers
No more artificial flowers
Throw away those artificial flowers
Flowers for ladies of society to wear
Throw away those artificial flowers
Those dumb-dumb flowers
Fashioned from Annie's
Fashioned from A-a-a-annie's des-pa-a-a-air
*(All three flowers together, measure 1 and 1/2 inches wide.)
