those instructions did not work for me... after 7 pages of interestingness there was not a single photo under Creative Commons for derivative works... so I advance searched flickr for "square" and "explore", limited to "Only search within Creative Commons-licensed content" and "Find content to modify, adapt, or build upon" then sorted by most recent... These scans come from my rather large magazine collection. Instead of filling my house with old moldy magazines, I scanned them (in most cases, photographed them) and filled a storage area with moldy magazines. Now they reside on an external harddrive. I thought others might appreciate these tidbits of forgotten history.
Please feel free to leave any comments or thoughts or impressions... Thanks in advance!

"Village that towers above China" by

Comment by Philip McMaster:
People favourably respond to Change
Generally speaking, people don't change for the better when criticized. But they do respond favourably to praise.
Huaxi Cun is not the worst place in China, and it has been following and sometimes leading the objectives and trends of the government and Chinese people - first it was to get rich - and clean up the mess later. We did this in the West on our own schedule, some Chinese are doing it now under the generally hypocritical pressure of the global community.
An aspirational monument - if you choose to see it that way..
When I was invited to Huaxi Cun for the inauguration of the “Village in the Sky”, (www.tudou.com/programs/view/05XpJXkiNwI/ ) I spoke of the new tower as a beacon for all to see, not in terms of opulence and excess, but as a towering 3 element "Symbol of Sustainability" - an aspirational symbol rising above all else - including the cookie-cutter villas, the grubby factories, the money focus and the faux world landmarks - to shock and awe viewers into realizing that all monuments have a message – and this one should inspire people to make the connection between Heaven, Earth and the People (Tian, Di, Ren 天地人) and that to achieve Wu Renbao’s “Heaven on Earth”… the Triple-Bottom-Line balance between Society, Environment and Economy (社会,环境,经济)must become Huaxi’s new ethic.

"Now that Huaxi village is rich, what's next?"
Following my presentation, the new building’s architect Ma Xusheng, in turn praised my interpretation of his building’s design, saying that no one had thought of it before, but that “with your new ‘Society, Environment, Economy ‘meaning attached, our building is even richer”.
At a private dinner with village leaders the evening before, I had shamelessly asked: “Now that Huaxi village is rich, what’s next?” – hoping to encourage them to expound on how they were going to share Huaxi’s wealth and expertise with other communities and to build sustainable enterprises based on a model ecological civilisation… however the response was understandable, as a bit more thinking is required; and considering most people’s focus was still on showing off and celebrating what they have achieved so far, the answer was a simple “Gambei!”

No Paper or No Plastic?
By Jon Dalton
Reluctantly setting aside the lofty and complicated socioeconomic maladies
Michigan’s largest city faces, and even more reluctantly setting aside
possible solutions, there is one issue that everybody living in Detroit
knows about more than any student of sociology. For too long a time now,
Detroiters have had to drive at least ten miles out of their way to get the
groceries they need.
This isn’t to say that there are no places to get groceries in Detroit.
Honey Bee Market, Eastern Market, University Food Center, a downright
enviable amount of private convenient stores and plenty of places that sell
food secondarily such as CVS Pharmacy are all great places to get certain
items and can absolutely provide enough to tide an average not-too-picky
shopper over. For an area as bustling as the Motor City, however, it just
isn’t enough.
Try this: Think of your favorite chain grocery store, the place you can get
everything you need and cheap! Now open another tab (don’t use this one!)
and google that store. Now click on google maps and take a moment to bask
in the awe of the convenience that is the twenty first century and how
quickly you can get almost anything should the mood strike. In the event of
a nuclear war, Global Warming doom, a SARS outbreak or even a zombie attack,
you can rest assured knowing you can fully stock your underground bunker
without breaking the bank. Now go back to the search bar with your favorite
store and type “Detroit” next to it. Notice anything? A standoffish bubble
around a certain city, maybe?
It might be the fault of ineffectual city planners, it might be that your
favorite store didn’t care to help Detroit out, or it could be that the
amount of crime in every inch of the city simply makes doing business here
more trouble than it’s worth. Whatever the reason, the abundance, quality,
convenience and thrift of major chain grocery stores is something Detroit is
going to have to do without. This is just tough luck for those men and women
who work long hours and only have later at night to shop, anyone who prefers
a certain variety and doesn’t have transportation, or for a family on a
budget who like to buy in bulk and keep an eye out for sales. But really,
how many people fitting those descriptions could be in Detroit?
Hypothetically, if just one superstore planted itself firmly in an
accessible location of the city how much might the roughly 30% of Detroiters
who are on food stamps save on grocery costs? How much gas money would they
get to keep? How many lives could be improved in untold ways by someone
simply having one thing they need to help them through the week? Let’s not
even deal with the jobs that would be created or we might start getting
depressed.
Sociologists have noticed the lack of grocery stores in urban areas vs.
suburbs in other cities as well, on the off chance that anyone out there
isn’t tired of hearing this though, analysts say it’s particularly bad in
Detroit. As usual, assigning blame is too easy… and too difficult, and if
anyone isn’t doing all they can to fix the problem, they surely know who
they are. Let’s just make sure that if and when a Wal-Mart, Kroger, Meijer,
etc. decides to join our city, the first thing they see is a welcome mat
and a group of eager shoppers waiting with bells on… and food stamps…

Lea Flanders indulged passions for journalism and world travel
By Rebecca Jones, Special To The Rocky
October 5, 2007
Lea Flanders, who first took up journalism at age 41 and proceeded to write for the Longmont Daily Times-Call for the next 48 years, died on Sept. 17 after a brief battle with cancer. She was 91.
Mrs. Flanders, who retired from writing in 2005, worked as a community news reporter, special sections editor, columnist and photographer. She won many writing awards over the years. She served as president of Colorado Press Women for two years, and she was the first woman to serve as president of the Colorado chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists/Sigma Delta Chi. She is in Who's Who of American Women and Foremost Women of Communications.
"She loved the press in Colorado, and everyone in the media," said her daughter, Francea Phillips, of Longmont. Phillips said one of the highlights of her mother's life was organizing a group of 15 newswomen to attend the United Nations' Women's Conference in Beijing in 1995.
It was journalism that led Mrs. Flanders to discover one of her other great passions: world travel. It was sometime during the late 1950s that the newspaper challenged her to set up and lead a tour of Europe.
"She started traveling then, and she never stopped," her daughter said. "She's been around the world four times."
Phillips said family members are attempting to make a list of all the countries to which her mother traveled in her life. "So far, we're up to three pages. We believe she visited nearly every country."
Just this spring, Mrs. Flanders completed a three-month round-the-world cruise with her grandson, Andrew Phillips.
Mrs. Flanders also brought the world to Longmont. Hundreds of people stayed at her home while visiting Longmont, some for a night, some for a year or more. She sponsored two exchange students from Africa who spent a year with her, and she hosted a Japanese student, a British girl and a Swiss girl.
"She was constantly fostering an international spirit," Phillips said. "She totally believed the world was her hometown."
Born in Hugo, Mrs. Flanders graduated from high school in Colorado Springs and worked her way through college as a cosmetologist. She received a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Colorado in 1941, and later did graduate study at Columbia University in New York.
She married Frank Flanders, a banker, in 1941. Soon after their marriage, her husband enlisted in the military during World War II, and Mrs. Flanders spent the war folding parachutes and working at the Lockheed Corp. in California.
The Flanderses returned to Longmont in 1947 and became an integral part of the community. Among the organizations in which Mrs. Flanders participated were the Red Hat Club, the Sunshine Club, the Longmont Arts Council, the Longmont Theatre Company and the Newcomers Club. "To her deathbed, she was still a member of the Newcomers Club," Phillips said. "She insisted on remaining a member all her years because she said that's where all the exciting people start."
Mrs. Flanders was preceded in death by her husband, in 1998, and by an infant son, David Harris Flanders. In addition to her daughter, she is survived by a son, Fred Flanders, and his wife, Melody, of Westminster; grandchildren Tiffany Merlo and Andrew Phillips, of Longmont, David Flanders, of London, and Rachael Flanders, of Westminster; and two great-grandchildren, Alexander and Benjamin Merlo.
A memorial service was Sept. 25 in Longmont. Contributions may be made to the St. Vrain Historical Society's Hover Home Project or a charity of choice in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry St., Longmont, CO 80501.
From an article on the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, very topical at the end of 1938 even with Neville Chamberlain promising "peace in our time" on return from Munich. Fortunately, by the time the "balloon went up", we had better aircraft than obsolete Gloster Gladiators for the defence of our skies. I wonder how many of these young pilots survived the war? And that dog looks like potential FOD to me!
The prototype Gladiator appeared in 1934 and the first production models were issued to the RAF in 1937. A carrier borne Sea Gladiator was issued to the Royal Navy.
During 1938, the RAF was receiving its firs Hurricanes and Spitfires which started to replace the Gladiator in front line squadrons. Many Gladiators were redeployed to the Middle East. Gladiators also saw active service in France and Norway in 1940. Sea Gladiators were deployed to Malta, performing very well against the Italian Air Force until supplies of Hurricanes became available for Malta. The erroneous belief is that there were initially only three Gladiators to defend Malta, later christened Faith, Hope and Charity, but this was not the case.
The basic format is that there should be a single hash key named 'content' whose value is in turn a hash with a single key named 'items' whose value is an array of the content items in the format shown.
LOVE. STORY
It took 30 years but Anne and Ed Candreva
of Fire Island Pines finally had their dream
wedding. Anne explained.
Ed and I were introduced by mutual
friends during Memorial Day weekend, 1974,
on the boardwalk at Fire Island Pines.
I was from New Jersey and working a summer job at the Blue Whale Restaurant and Bar as a pool lifeguard by day and cock tail waitress by night.
Ed’s family had been living in the Pines
since he was 10. They owned Peter’s Marina
Market, where Ed Iworked for his dad.
Ed would often stop by the pooi for a quick swim while I was working and we’d talk. We had a lot in common, and he was becoming a good friend, I thought.
A few weeks later, Ed and I were both at a
party, when he suddenly asked me to do him
a favor and wear his high school ring.
So anothjer girl would leave him alone , I said ok , but after a while we got so used to being together we had so much in common and were the best of friends , So 6 months later w
We eloped to Elkton, Md., and were married at the stroke of noon. We were 18.
For many years, Ed and I struggled with very little money. Weboth worked hard at the market on Fire Island during the summer, and off-season Ed worked as a carpenter while I managed a drug store.
We purchased a house in Holbrook, raised two beautiful Sons and have 3 Grandchildren We have been active in the Fire Island Pines volunteer Fire Depart ment where Ed is assistant chief. Over the years, we’ve created a fabulous blend of friends and family.
Who all attended our real Disney Fairy Tale wedding
