My wife and I did an art project; The Ameland Challenge. (Ameland being a Dutch island, hosting art expositions each November.) We reacted on each others work. She painted on mdf panels (30x30 cm), I built Lego (32x32 studs).

Tubac is one of oldest surviving historic villages in southern Arizona and has evolved into an artist community.
Currently there is a project where about 50 casts of a sculptured javelina have been individually decorated and scattered around the area. This project is similar to many others is towns across America over the past several decades. Some local icon is multi-produced, individually decorated and dispersed at visible locales. Examples are the cows of Kansas City, buffalo in Cody, Wyoming and gutars in Tupelo, Mississippi (birthplace of Elvis Presley).
For those who are unfamiliar with the javelina, this animal looks like a wild pig but is not. They are a species known as peccary. A peccary is a medium-sized pig-like hoofed mammal of the family Tayassuidae (New World pigs). They are found throughout Central and South America and in the southwestern area of North America.
They have mainly short coarse salt and pepper colored hair, short legs, and a pig-like nose. The hair around the neck/shoulder area is lighter in color giving it the look of a collar. Javelina have long, sharp canine teeth which protrude from the jaws about an inch.
In southern Arizona javelina are generally seen as pests who come in the night in small groups to graze on prickly pear cactus and, if available tender plants, fallen fruit and insects.

This is an art project where I took pictures of people through their front windows at night (with their permission!) lit them from behind and then displayed them beneath a large black box with viewing holes in the top. The idea was to create a peep show effect, forcing people to peer into the holes and feel like voyeurs.

"Around Town Carousels Abound is an outdoor public arts project. The brightly painted, life-sized carousel horse sculptures are placed throughout the city and county. Meridian is the first city in Mississippi to join the national animals on parade phenomenon. Over 50 horses are displayed outside of government building, businesses, private homes and the Mississippi/Alabama Welcome Center. Each horse is uniquely designed and painted by a commissioned artist. The carousel icon represents the historical Dentzel Carousel located in Meridian, and it is the world's only two-row stationary Dentzel menagerie carousel.";

The Wolf Book, designed in 1990

In first grade, our teacher assigned us a project. Each student was assigned an animal, and our task was to research that animal. We compiled our research into a short, ten page book. The animal I chose was the Mongolian wild horse, and the experience was a blast. I absolutely loved the process of researching, drawing pictures and maps, and ending up with a designed object.
A few months later, during the summer of 1990, I decided to make another book about one of my favorite animals, the wolf. I spent several weeks photocopying pages from National Geographic World magazine, redrawing maps and diagrams, filling pages with some very bizarre editorial drawings, and typing paragraphs on an ancient word processor. The finished pages were then comb-bound at my father's office.
While designing my recent book, Forgetting Oildorado, I recalled the process of making The Wolf Book. I travelled to my parents house where the book resided, and flipped through it for the first time in well over a decade. It's fascinating to revisit something that was once so cherished, and to see the striking parallels between something that was designed at the age of 7 and the work that I'm currently producing.
When I made this book, I had no idea that I'd end up a graphic designer. But it seems that from a very early age, I was -- unknowingly -- well on my way.
