Beckoning off to the side (explore another time?) I saw a path to a small waterfall tumbling down a boulder-strewn stream bank, my last look at this truly scenic area; from here, driving the Oscar Wigington Memorial Highway (State Rd S-37-413) in Sumter National Forest, we continued to Whitewater Falls Road (SC-130), crossed over the border from South Carolina into North Carolina (NC-281), and passed Whitewater Falls Lane [35.027789, -83.017671] with its scenic Upper Whitewater Falls Trail Access, on our way to the Rosman Highway (US-64), and back to Brevard

Wigington Overlook – 2021APR13 – SC Highway 413, SC:

The Oscar Wigington Scenic Byway overlook is a highlight, one of the most spectacular overlooks in South Carolina's Upstate.

We stopped as evening set in, accompanied by a light drizzle.

The best of our 848 captures are in a mini-themed album:

It was a trip trying to get a shot of this Golden crown Kinglet (Scientific name: Regulus satrapa). It was constantly under dark areas with fleeting appearances. It's not my dream shot with all that noise from auto ISO at 6400 but for this specie I will make an exception🙏😁

How big is a golden-crowned kinglet?

8 to 11 cm. Its length, at 8 to 11 cm (3.1 to 4.3 in), is probably the shortest of any American passerine. However, its weight, which averages around 5.9 g (0.21 oz), with a range of 4 to 7.8 g (0.14 to 0.28 oz), is marginally more on average than the American bushtit and black-tailed gnatcatcher.

..

..

The kinglet is migratory, and its range extends from northwest Canada and Alaska south to Mexico. Its breeding habitat is spruce-fir forests in the northern and mountainous regions of the United States and Canada.

Hi,

This cat on my street is checking which cat went on the place.

Laurieston Moors Area, we stood here sky watching for birds of prey, there was a Peregrine, the moors looked lovely when the sun shone on them.

There are some rather unusual and spectacular rock formations that rise up out of the thin soil in the Pole Mountain area, which is located in the Medicine Bow National Forest in southeastern Wyoming.

With a change of lodging, we had a bit of time to explore the area. Kathleen Springs was on the way, so we stopped off to check out the trail.

In an area with so many diverse ecosystems, it's always wonderful to encounter new-to-me insects...it seems that every unique area offers species that I've never seen before! This 'lifer' Anchor Stink Bug seems ready for Halloween in its orange and black appearance...my excitement upon spotting this beauty made me intent on getting some shots as it quickly made its way around a Goldenrod at Muddy Creek!

The awesome view from Grizzly Peak above Berkeley California. You can see Berkeley, Oakland, Emeryville and San Francisco. I was able to do some long exposure shots and play with my camera some. I need to come back and see from some different vantage points.

St. Peter's Basilica (Italian San Pietro in Vaticano) is a major basilica in Vatican City, an enclave of Rome. St. Peter's was until recently the largest church ever built (it covers an area of 23,000 m2 and has a capacity of over 60,000), and is one of the holiest sites in Christendom.

Ancient tradition has it that St. Peter's Basilica was built at the place where Peter, the apostle who is considered the first pope, was crucified and buried; his tomb is under the main altar. Other popes are also buried in and below the basilica. Contrary to what one might reasonably assume, St. Peter's is not a cathedral - the pope's cathedral is St. John Lateran.

History

The current location of St. Peter's Basilica is the site of the Circus of Nero in the first century AD. After Emperor Constantine officially recognized Christianity he started construction (in 324) of a great basilica in this exact spot, which had previously been a cemetery for pagans as well as Christians.

In the mid-15th century it was decided that the old basilica should be rebuilt. Pope Nicholas V asked architect Bernardo Rossellino to start adding to the old church. This was abandoned after a short while, but in the late 15th century Pope Sixtus IV had the Sistine Chapel started nearby.

Construction on the current building began under Pope Julius II in 1506 and was completed in 1615 under Pope Paul V. Donato Bramante was to be the first chief architect. Many famous artists worked on the "Fabbrica di San Pietro" (as the complex of building operations were officially called). Michelangelo, who served as main architect for a while, designed the dome, and Bernini designed the great St. Peter's Square.

The redesign of the Delft train station started in 1999. The project's goal was to move the two tracks underground in order to reduce noise pollution in the tiny, quaint city centre. In 2015 the new station building opened and trains ran successfully through the new tunnels. By 2020, they aim to have the old infrastructure (platforms and viaduct) removed.

Deconstruction of the old platforms is underway. I shunted a barrier aside to take this.

some of the buck and rail fences are being replaced with new wire fences- I don't think it is an visual improvement for the area!

We had a great walk through the Weaselhead Natural Area this day. The landscape shots turned out nicely, and we saw a bit of wildlife, but the photos didn't turn out.

I was taking pictures in front of their faces with a 50mm lens.

But how could they not know that?

I decided to call this phenomenon “Zero Awareness Zone.”

The Giant's Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. It is located in County Antrim on the north coast of Northern Ireland, about three miles (4.8 km) northeast of the town of Bushmills.

Around 50 to 60 million years ago, during the Paleocene Epoch, Antrim was subject to intense volcanic activity, when highly fluid molten basalt intruded through chalk beds to form an extensive lava plateau. As the lava cooled, contraction occurred.

Horizontal contraction fractured in a similar way to drying mud, with the cracks propagating down as the mass cooled, leaving pillarlike structures, which are also fractured horizontally into "biscuits". In many cases the horizontal fracture has resulted in a bottom face that is convex while the upper face of the lower segment is concave, producing what are called "ball and socket" joints. The size of the columns is primarily determined by the speed at which lava from a volcanic eruption cools.

The extensive fracture network produced the distinctive columns seen today. The basalts were originally part of a great volcanic plateau called the Thulean Plateau which formed during the Paleocene.

According to legend, the columns are the remains of a causeway built by a giant. The story goes that the Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn MacCool), from the Fenian Cycle of Gaelic mythology, was challenged to a fight by the Scottish giant Benandonner. Fionn accepted the challenge and built the causeway across the North Channel so that the two giants could meet. In one version of the story, Fionn defeats Benandonner. In another, Fionn hides from Benandonner when he realises that his foe is much bigger than he is. Fionn's wife, Oonagh, disguises Fionn as a baby and tucks him in a cradle. When Benandonner sees the size of the 'baby', he reckons that its father, Fionn, must be a giant among giants. He flees back to Scotland in fright, destroying the causeway behind him so that Fionn would be unable to chase him down.

Across the sea, there are identical basalt columns (a part of the same ancient lava flow) at Fingal's Cave on the Scottish isle of Staffa, and it is possible that the story was influenced by this.

In overall Irish mythology, Fionn mac Cumhaill is not a giant but a hero with supernatural abilities, contrary to what this particular legend may suggest. In Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry (1888) it is noted that, over time, "the pagan gods of Ireland [...] grew smaller and smaller in the popular imagination, until they turned into the fairies; the pagan heroes grew bigger and bigger, until they turned into the giants". There are no surviving pre-Christian stories about the Giant's Causeway, but it may have originally been associated with the Fomorians (Fomhóraigh); the Irish name Clochán na bhFomhóraigh or Clochán na bhFomhórach means "stepping stones of the Fomhóraigh". The Fomhóraigh are a race of supernatural beings in Irish mythology who were sometimes described as giants and who may have originally been part of a pre-Christian pantheon
