The Architecture & Design in London & Scotland two-week study tour visited significant historical and contemporary sites in London and environs, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. Important buildings by major architects and designers were seen including those by Sir John Soane, Sir Norman Foster, and Charles Rennie Macintosh. Students visited Macintosh’s Hill House and the Willow Tea Rooms, and the University of Glasgow’s Hunterian Art Gallery, home of a large collection of work from Macintosh’s circle.

My students decided to have a little architecture competition. I don't think I was specifically included in the bounds of the competition, actually, as a potential contestant. I decided to enter anyway.

How did I do?

As teachers, it's our job to set standards and constantly raise the bar —to provide quality examples of what can be done, what ought to be done, and what might be done. We're also expected to provide know-how, so that students who are curious can also learn how this was done and with what tools.

I don't have enough architectural chops or interest to see to it that this building ever stands. But if even one kid sees this, and then learns to draw a building in some fashion other than as a triangle on top of a square, I'll be happy.

In that sense, this is a Gordonian sigil-shoal, all rolled into one image. It's not just designed to change my experience of the world, but to remold the minds of people who see it. It doesn't just fix one small thing in the world; it makes a range of positive outcomes far more likely.

I think visual thinking skills are far more important than we generally give them credit for being, in the Western world. I'm going to have more to say about this eventually, but there's a power in the visual image that cannot be conveyed by other means. And we ignore this way of knowing the world at our peril, especially in how we educate young people.

Whether a marketing campaign or a museum exhibit, a video game or a complex control system, the design we see is the culmination of many concepts and practices brought together from a variety of disciplines. Because no one can be an expert on everything, designers have always had to scramble to find the information and know-how required to make a design work until now. Universal Principles of Design is the first comprehensive, cross-disciplinary encyclopedia of design. Richly illustrated and easy to navigate, it pairs clear explanations of every design concept with visual examples of the concepts applied in practice. From the "80/20 rule to chunking, from baby-face bias to Ockham's razor, and from self-similarity to storytelling, every major design concept is defined and illustrated for readers to expand their knowledge.

This landmark reference will become the standard for designers, engineers, architects, and students who seek to broaden and improve their design expertise.

Abuja, Nigeria is a planned capital city, though only a portion of the plan has been implemented. The commercial/government center has adhered to the plan, but it's flanked by bizarrely western looking suburban sprawl (at least from aerial photographs).

The first to be built on campus in nearly 40 years, the newest residence hall at Texas A&M University at Kingsville is a 630-bed student housing facility that is comprised of three-and four-story buildings that create several courtyards. Built in the campus’ traditional Mission Style, the building includes two and four-bedroom suites with one or two bathrooms, depending on the design, a living room, and a kitchenette. The living and learning environment has study labs, a large lounge and meeting rooms, wireless internet, a full kitchen for student use, laundry facilities and Resident Advisor (RA) apartments.

ArcStart is a three-week long residential program for high school students that offers students the opportunity to explore the built environment firsthand through an introduction to architectural design. Participants will experience the rewarding intensity of an engaging college architecture studio, partake in skill-building workshops that reinforce analytical and conceptual problem solving skills, and visit architecturally significant projects in Ann Arbor and the immediate region. I can't figure out how this guardrail happened exactly. . . . did they just build the stairs and then realized there was only 4' of head clearance?
