ZEN MAGNETS - Neodymium Magnetic Balls (@432) - 2R-Hex Architecture Design (Detail: base section - bottom section)
4 2L hexagons ... arrange like so.
This was created for the Zen Magnets 2R-Hex Architecture contest ... zenmagnets.com/blog/?p=236
The end result is a very portable Zen Corporate Headquarters Building design doubling as a trans-warp universe hopper spaceship ... making it possible for Zen Magnets to be anywhere in the galaxy and beyond.
The challenge on this design was two-fold: limiting subunit designs to 2L-Hex sheet variations and getting something balanced and architecturally stable enough to stand up on its own without the use of a metal sheet.
This was constructed entirely of 2-R-Hex (2-layer Hexagon sheets) folded and combined in various ways.
See set for build details: www.flickr.com/photos/tend2it/sets/72157627353248875/
The combined 4 sheet 2-R-Hex (1 + 3) starts the component build details (Starting from the base section to the top).

Sheffield University straddles a dual-carriageway ring road of the kind that destroyed the coherence of city-centre edges across the UK in the 1960s. To the west of Upper Hanover Street and up Brook Hill is Firth Court, the historic main building of the university, completed the year it received its charter in 1905. A little down the hill is one of the most spectacular modern university buildings in the country - the confident and starkly beautiful Arts Tower, a 78m-high Miesian slab by GMW, completed in 1965.

Labour, City, Form: Towards a Common Architectural Language (Pier Vittorio Aureli, Spring 2012)
The design studio focuses on the relationship between the development of the modern city and the construction of political subjectivity from the Renaissance on. This relationship will be investigated from the point of view of the project of housing as the locus where architecture directly addresses its subject not only in terms of bare life, but also of ethos.
