The salt flats consist of multiple, shallow, stepped, clay-bottom pools that originate from partitioned off seawater. The shallow pools, with added sunshine, heat, and wind, allow for evaporation of the water resulting in an increase in its salinity. Once the saline level of the water reaches a certain amount, it gets pumped with the Archimede's screw to a higher and shallower pool. Historically, windmills produced the energy to drive the pump, now the pumps have electric motors. Over time, the water gradually progresses through multiple pools.

 

The salt is harvested annually, in early fall, before the rainy season starts. In Trapani, they still harvest the salt manually both by skimming the surface and scooping it out with buckets. The very fine salt crystals first skimmed off of the surface of the water in July are most valuable and are called fiore di sale. The salt crystals that are manually scooped from the bottom of the pools, later in the season, are composed of larger, coarser crystals. Those are either sold as coarse salt or can be ground down to a finer composition. Historically, windmills were also used to grind the salt.

 

After it is harvested, the salt is piled alongside the pools to allow for drying. Due to manual harvesting of the salt, as opposed to excavator harvesting, the crystals stay clean and don't need to be further processed or purified. During drying, the salt mounds are covered with terracotta tiles to keep them clean and protect them from rain. The salt is then packaged for sale according to fine and coarse distributions. Any salt that gets dirty is sold as street salt for winter road management.

 

This configuration of a series of shallow evaporation pools, still in use today, was introduced by the Arabs between the C6th and C9th AD, whereas the Phoenicians first produced salt along Sicily's coast either by boiling seawater trapped in the island's many marshes or by waiting for water to evaporate from solely ONE pool. The Museo del Sale in Trapani is a family-owned and managed salt flat which has been producing salt for many generations. The salt pans, there, date from the 1400s.

La mongolfiera è un aeromobile che utilizza aria calda, un gas più leggero dell'aria circostante, per ottenere la forza necessaria per sollevarsi da terra. Per la precisione non si tratta proprio di aria, ma dei gas della combustione del propano. Inizialmente il pallone mediante un ventilatore viene riempito di aria che poi viene sostituita dai prodotti della combustione. La mongolfiera fa parte della categoria degli aerostati, veicoli aerei che utilizzano gas per sollevarsi; è il tipo più comune di pallone aerostatico. Quando in volo vengono trasportati dal vento e non possiedono strumenti direzionali propri. Questo li differenzia dai dirigibili che, pur essendo mantenuti in volo da principi simili, possiedono invece motori ed eliche in grado di influenzare il percorso del mezzo.Come tutti gli aerostati, anche la mongolfiera vola in virtù del fatto che il gas che riempie il pallone è più leggero dell'aria circostante e questo determina una spinta verso l'alto secondo il ben noto principio di Archimede. Tra le manifestazioni più importanti in Italia per le mongolfiere vi è il Ferrara Balloons Festival di Ferrara, gigantesco evento turistico alle porte della città estense in grado di portare al Parco Urbano circa 400.000 persone nel 2009.

Il primissimo ciclo di prove è terminato, Archimede si prepara ad uscire dall'interconnessione provvisoria fra l'AV e l'area di cantiere.

Nato a Siracusa nel 287 a.C. e morto a Siracusa nel 212 a.C

Considerato come uno dei più grandi scienziati e matematici della storia i suoi interessi spaziano dalla geometria all'idrostatica, dall'ottica alla meccanica: fu in grado di calcolare la superficie e il volume della sfera, scoprì e sfruttò i principi di funzionamento delle leve. Una delle realizzazioni di Archimede più ammirate nell'antichità fu il planetario. Le migliori informazioni su questo marchingegno sono fornite da Cicerone, il quale scrive che nell'anno 212 a.C., quando Siracusa fu saccheggiata dalle truppe romane, il console Marco Claudio Marcello portò a Roma un apparecchio costruito da Archimede che riproduceva su una sfera la volta del cielo e un altro che prediceva il moto apparente del sole, della luna e dei pianeti, equivalente quindi a una moderna sfera armillare.

La Mongolfiera è un aeromobile che vola per applicazione del Principio di Archimede: “Un corpo immerso in un fluido riceve una spinta dal basso verso l'alto pari al peso del volume del fluido spostato”. Nel caso della Mongolfiera il fluido è il gas. Una mongolfiera piena di aria calda risulta più leggera di quanto pesa il volume di aria che sposta e quindi viene spinta verso l'alto secondo lo stesso principio.

 

The balloon is an aircraft that flies by application of the Principle of Archimedes: ";A body immersed in a fluid receives a boost from the bottom up equal to the weight of fluid displaced" In the case of the balloon the fluid is the gas. A balloon full of hot air is lighter weight than the volume of air that moves and then is pushed up on the same principle.

In vista della manutenzione delle due E402B (101/142) che RFI aveva a disposizione all'Archimede da 2 settimane si vedono circolare 2 E656 (274/565). Qui ecco che transita a Montelupo con la E656.274 in testa e E656.565 in coda in perfetto orario espletando il NCL Roma Tuscolana/Pisa Centrale.

E656.570 RFI oggi al traino di due vetture Archimede con l'NCL Bologna C.le-Ancona, fotografato a Cattolica.

La E656 294 riposa in stazione a Catania Centrale dopo aver trainato l'IC "Archimede" da Messina, per ripartire l'indomani con le sue 3 carrozze per Messina che si uniranno alla sezione da Palermo e proseguire per Roma.
