In Friesland is skûtsjesilen (sailing with 14 historical flat bottom boats) one of the Top Event for Dutch tourism. Skûtsjesilen is a synonym for sailing competitions with old freight ships. These flat bottom boats were built at the beginning of the last century for the transportation of peat, manure and other loads to the farms. For this purpose the ships had to sail in shallow waters. That’s why these ships had to be built long and flat. Speed and manoeuvrability is characteristic of a skûtsje and therefore is this type of ship especially suitable for sailing competitions. To anticipate on supply and demand quickly and adapt to changing weather conditions was a daily struggle in those days. In difficult times the skippers mostly sailed on the initiation of the local innkeeper to make some extra money. Then, family and furniture were removed from the skûtsje and left on the shore.
N.B.
All races of all 14 skûtsjes can be directly followed Worldwide on the live stream “You Tube” and the app “Track&Trace”.

Both the Crazy Tuesday and the our Daily Challenge themes were for night photography. Well, I waited til the last night for the CT picture, which additionally needed to be done outside, and I didn’t have access to my car so I missed out and can’t put this in the group pool… a lesson learned.. The ODC’s “after dark” could be done inside or out.
… see CT update below
However, I did want to explain this one. I was shooting, indoors, using the Slow Shutter app on my iPhone and noticed my neighbor had backed out of her driveway and was going down the street so I quickly grabbed that shot and then panned left across my Christmas tree’s fiber optic lights. This was the result… serendipity .. am not sure how many seconds I had it set for definitely more than 2-4 but it sure boogies the mind.
Btb, the tail-lights are about a third of the way down on the left side.
… (later) One of the admins, DagBan of the Crazy Tuesday group, just answered my sigh about indoor night photography and said I could post this!! Whoo-hoo! So let’s give it a shot!!

Six months in the making ...
Roughly six months ago I was looking at my lightrac and TPE apps on my phone and decided to scroll through the year to see when the sun would be rising at the arch in Bow Fiddle Rock in Portknockie. I discovered that the first week in May was the ideal time. This was on my mind ever since....staying 30 minutes drive away from Bow Fiddle I knew it could be possible for me to achieve this shot...with a little help from mother nature. The start of May was freezing cold and even had sleet / snow but with more research into the weather and tide times I calculated that on the morning of the 3rd The sun should be rising at 05:15 with a partially cloudy sky and the tide would be making its way in. So this morning I left my house at 3:45 with an ideal shot in mind. I wanted to create a shot with a sun flare in the arch ....
