Another photo on a walk last weekend, the salt pan houses..
Built circa 1760 for the salt boiling industry, as the Maryburgh Salt Works, probably salt pans with housing above. Pair parellel blocks linked by (later) wall which has been heightened and which was originally open at centre. Arrangement is broadly symmetrical. Blocks are 2-storey, rectangular-plan, gabled, with end stacks, rubble-built with squared dressings (south block part harled), each block with wide opening in west gable at low level (timber-lintelled at south, concrete at north); also forestairs; slate roofs; deep skews with moulded skewputts suggest roof covering may originally have been pantiles or thatch.
Although what remains is incomplete, Whatley describes surviving buildings as "certainly the most complete upstanding remains of the (saltboiling) industry on the west coast". In fact, they appear to be most complete to survive in Scotland.
The Prestwick burgh/records of 12th February 1480 uses the term "salt pan hous" which suggests the existence of the industry locally by that time. The burgh records also discussed applications for erecting of salt pans on 25th June 1763 and 7th Sept. 1765 (Information provided by Kyle & Carrick civic society). (Historic Scotland)

This two-acre plot of earth at the corner of El Camino Real ("The King's Highway") and Baldwin Street in San Mateo, California is perhaps the most venerable and historic site in the city. For over 150 years (since 1866) it has been the location of the Episcopal Church of St. Matthew, making it the oldest continually-used location in the city.
The devastating 1906 earthquake ruined the 1866 church and its fabulous bell tower. On May 15, 1910, the congregation buried a new cornerstone, containing all the artifacts from the original stone. Under the spiritual guidance of Reverend Neptune Blood William Gallaway, famed church architect Willis Polk engineered the new edifice. Considered one of the most beautiful houses of worship in California, it recalls the 11th century Stokes Poges Church in London, where Thomas Gray reportedly penned the poem "Elegy in a Country Churchyard."

Ravaged by fire on the evening of 12 November 2022, the Dundee retail premises known as Willison House were latterly the subject of a planning application for conversion to student flats.
The building, at the junction of Barrack Street and Willison Street, was erected around 1934 to the designs of architectural practice Findlay Stewart and Robbie, for the local house furnishing firm John L Robertson Ltd. The appearance of this arresting piece of Art Deco in one of the city's ancient thoroughfares probably raised a few eyebrows at the time.
Robertson's ceased trading in 2011 and the shop—by then looking a little the worse for wear—fell into abandonment.
Within days of the fire, demolition of the building's shell began.
It seems like the Color-Solagon enlarging lenses are almost completely unknown, even among people very familiar with a wide range of enlarging lenses.
Thanks to a couple of helpful people here, as well as the wonderful help of the FOMU - Fotomuseum Antwerpen and its library, I was able to confirm that the Color-Solagon features a 6 elements in 4 groups plasmat design (similar to most of the Componon-S lenses from Schneider Kreuznach), but the only real source I‘ve seen is on the "Color Solagon II 60 mm", which was apparently sold with some of the Varioscop 35/44 enlargers! I wasn‘t able to find a single document on the 70, 80 or 90 mm variants unfortunately, but I‘d guess they were made for a different purpose - either for one of Agfa’s Minilab or some industrial application.
I was able to find some of the Color-Solagon lenses, but unfortunately most of them are in pretty bad shape with either haze, fungus or some mechanical damage, so it‘s impossible to judge the quality in their original state.
The "Color-Solagon DII 90 mm F 4.5" shown here is not mentioned anywhere on the internet as far as I could find at least... I think it might be very similar to the 80 mm variant though.
If you know more about it, or someone who could, I‘d really appreciate any help!

Photographed May 2023 / Canon FP 35mm SLR Film Camera with Canon FD 28mm/3.5 breechblock lens (early chrome nose). The film was Kentmere 400 metered ASA 320 developed in KTF-QP (a hydroquinone+phenidone formula which uses triethanolamine as alkali). The negative was illuminated on a light table and scanned with a Pentax k3 DSLR and Schneider COMPONON-S 80mm/4 enlarging lens on a Pentax bellows init. The image was edited on an iPad mini using the Snap Seed application: full frame scan of entire negative area without trimming.

Log entry
Location: Outpost on Geonosis
Time: Months after the battle of Geonosis
This place is horrid. I have been stuck here for months now.Soon I will be transferred to a new unit, the 253rd. I was stationed here after the succesful invasion during which most of my unit was killed. Our outpost was quickly constructed and is undermanned.Everyone here wants to leave but it looks like I am the only one that will be leaving soon. The planet is nothing but dust, dirt and debris from the recent battle. Hopefully this 253rd legion will be better than here.
Sorry about the really poor log I am not much of a writer.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) currently recognises only one species of giraffe with nine subspecies. During the 1900s, various taxonomies with two or three species were proposed. A 2007 study on the genetics of giraffes using mitochondrial DNA suggested at least six lineages could be recognised as species. A 2011 study using detailed analyses of the morphology of giraffes, and application of the phylogenetic species concept, described eight species of living giraffes. A 2016 study also concluded that living giraffes consist of multiple species. The researchers suggested the existence of four species, which have not exchanged genetic information between each other for 1 to 2 million years.
A 2020 study showed that depending on the method chosen, different taxonomic hypotheses recognizing from two to six species can be considered for the genus Giraffa. That study also found that multi-species coalescent methods can lead to taxonomic over-splitting, as those methods delimit geographic structures rather than species. The three-species hypothesis, which recognises G. camelopardalis, G. giraffa, and G. tippelskirchi, is highly supported by phylogenetic analyses and also corroborated by most population genetic and multi-species coalescent analyses. A 2021 whole genome sequencing study suggests the existence of four distinct species and seven subspecies.
The cladogram below shows the phylogenetic relationship between the four proposed species and seven subspecies based on the genome analysis. Note the eight lineages correspond to eight of the traditional subspecies in the one species hypothesis. The Rothschild giraffe is subsumed into G. camelopardalis camelopardalis.

I heart the French Quarter.
If I had to move to New Orleans for some reason, I could see myself very happy there,
It reminds me of senior year when I started my applications to college
and Tulane was on the list.
Didn't really give the school much thought actually, since it wasn't near the top of my list.
I wonder how that would have been like....
I have had very little success with the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) this year. Much of it is down to me being a little too lazy to stay up until 2 AM before venturing out. Another factor has been the number of days that were overcast when the Northern Lights were forecast. Last night, December 29 and 30th, 2022, I actually did venture out. Despite the prognostications of my phone’s weather application calling for cloud, the night was actually clear with stars visible in abundance. It was also a little windy and cold, but it would probably be my last chance in 2022 to capture the aurora so I ventured out anyway.
On this night, I elected to take the Canon EOS R instead of the Olympus E-M1. So, with a much more limited choice of lenses, I settled on the Laowa Argus FFII 35mm f/0.95. It's an all manual lens, but when mounted to a tripod non-electronic lenses are sometimes a better idea anyway. For one, I won’t forget to disable the OIS since it doesn't exist. Also, this particular lens is very fast with good sharpness even wide open. Stopped down to f/2.0 or f/2.8 and quality is absolutely not an issue while still providing a fairly wide and bright aperture. It seemed a better choice than the slower Canon lenses I own,
There was some auroral activity when I left my house around midnight (the camera’s clock metadata was showing almost an hour earlier than it was--I’ve now fixed this.). I travelled along the Alaska Highway to a point just south of the Whitehorse airport and the Hillcrest subdivision. It gave me a pretty good view of the northern sky while allowing me to include some road lights and human infrastructure, allowing for both context and reference in whatever images I took. Unfortunately, and this seems fairly normal for me, when I go in search of aurora, the time it takes to go from getting my gear together, presetting the camera, warming up the truck, and getting to my destination, things have changed considerably. In this case, the air was filling with ice crystals, almost a kind of fine suspended snow, that was hampering visibility, and the aurora had pretty much disappeared. Still, I set up my big tripod, camera and lens just in time to catch one last burst of light from the sky.
I took three shots in fairly quick succession. The first, significantly overexposing the road lights, really captured the greens in the sky, while the other two underexposed, and significantly underexposed, the sky respectively, but offered much more definition in the artificial lights below. These were to be test images, with more care taken thereafter, but everything faded so I got what I got. The result is far from perfect, but it shows how much potential exists if you’re willing to try. As a bonus, on processing the images I noticed that I may have inadvertently captured a couple meteors near the right side. Now that’s an unexpected wow for me.
Photo taken with the Canon EOS R and Laowa Argus FFII 35mm f/0.95 mounted to a Jobu Designs tripod with Acratech ball-head. Raw conversion and image stacking performed in Adobe Lightroom Classic 12, with geometric correction and additional tweaks performed in DxO PhotoLab 6.1.1.
