The U.S. Embassy in New Zealand successfully organized a second USA Universities Expo in Auckland to recruit promising candidates and advise potential students on admissions requirements, diverse fields of study, applications, campus culture and opportunities for financial aid.

Over twenty institutions were represented at the 2014 Expo including thirteen admissions officers and recruiters from distinguished institutions across America, ten locally-based alumni as well as representatives from EducationUSA, the U.S. Embassy’s Consular Section and Fulbright New Zealand. The event was held Saturday, September 20, at AUT’s Sir Paul Reeves Building and included breakout sessions on topics such as sport scholarships, financial assistance, and student visas throughout the day.

The Expo kicked off with a cultural greeting and welcome reception at the Waipapa Marae on the grounds of the University of Auckland which was graciously hosted by Ngati Whatua. This event allowed U.S. university representatives the opportunity to network and mingle with secondary school administrators and others from New Zealand’s education sector as well as U.S. Consulate General staff.

The following Monday, nine institutions joined EducationUSA to conduct outreach at four secondary schools in the Auckland region. Recruiters relished the opportunity to engage with New Zealand students in their own environments at the Kristin School, ACG Senior School, Avondale College and Auckland International College.

With over 5,000 colleges and universities in the United States to choose from, attending an American university can be a transformative experience and identifying the right fit is an important first step. The Universities Expo helps New Zealand students find out more about the options available to them and meet with recruiters, admissions officers and alumni face to face. The number of New Zealand students studying in America has increased every year for the last four years; by more than 8% last year alone. Our hope is to see that trend continue by raising awareness of opportunities and providing accurate, transparent and timely information to all.

The package, with return address and mailing address! I ended up getting the job and moving to New York. When I got there they said "never mind" and that sucked. I got a job elsewhere though, so it all worked out!

Mobile Application Technology - Effective Application With Proper Methodology. This is one of the best ways to promote a firm.

Promotion of a firm is just one simple use of the internet. At Young Innovators, we try to think of new ways to exploit the internet. This way we can help our clients. The satisfaction of our clients is our priority and it gives us immense satisfaction to see our clients happy. Another way the internet can be used by a company is conduct business deals over the internet. For example, suppose there is a bakery which is very famous locally. Of course it will have its fair share of customers. But there might be some people for whom the bakery will be too far. The bakery will thus miss out on a lot of potential customers. But, if the bakery has its own website in which the customers can also order something which the bakery will then deliver to their homes, then the bakery is gaining all those potential customers. This way the profits of the firm are going up. At Young Innovators, we try to give more innovative ideas to our customers so that their firm can have more profits. We have build our reputation on a solid base of service and intend to continue to do so.

Saturday afternoon and evening I joined John Drei Barnes and his movie crew as they filmed scenes for his feature OV. Much of that time was spent documenting the transformation of actor Curtis Smith into a monster by makeup artist Micah Williams.

This exhibition features ceramics in experimental architectural applications made by students from the Harvard Graduate School of Design during the Fall 2016 course, Material Practice as Research: Digital Design and Fabrication.

Exhibition dates: January 17 - February 10, 2017

Reception: Saturday, February 4th, 5:00pm - 7:00pm

Gallery Hours: 10am - 6pm each day

Course Instructor: Leire Asensio Villoria, Graduate School of Design

Consultant: Kathy King, Director of Education, Ceramics Program - OFA Harvard

Collaborators: Geoffrey Booras, Mark Burns

TA: Niccolò Dambrosio

The translation between the architectural design and the subsequent actualization process is mediated by various tools and techniques. Through the adoption in architectural design practice of computation and information technologies, with their capacity for a relatively seamless transition between design and fabrication, a more integrated workflow across the design and actualization process is made more accessible to designers. In recent years, designers have become increasingly able to move effortlessly between digital modeling, performance simulation, and physical realization. As technology evolves, the rapidly evolving field continually presents architects and designers with new challenges and opportunities for creative exploration as well as a more materially intelligent practice. This course pursued research in architectural deisgn placing technology as a driver in the creative processes and introduces students to the fundamentals of information technologies for architectural design. Topics addressed include associative modeling for fabrication including direct and indirect methods, CNC machine environment, industrial robotics, protyping techniques, building systems, and customization strategies.

In the course, ceramics served as a framework for research, discussion and experimentation on digital design and fabrication technoloigies. While ceramics has one of the longest histories as a material in architecture, it may also still be one of the material families to offer the potential and mutability to generate a range of novel applications by engaging a variety of emerging digital design and fabrication processes. The Craft-based manufacturing and high-volume industrial production traditionally associated with clay-blased ceramics may be rethought through the lens of of digital design and fabrication techniques. The extension of the capacity for the application of ceramics in architectrue through an engagement with digital design and fabrication is explored during semester-long group research projects with the additional guidance of the Harvard Ceramics program and with support from the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturer's Association (ASCER). The emphaisis of the course is placed on developing research methods within areas of design competition, digital fabrication, and related material processes.

View of badly deteriorated columns which had litterally fallen apart into piles of staves. Rebuilding and restoration required regluing and mechanical fasteners (screws) with clamps; application of Abatron liquid wood consolidant followed by wood epox, shaping, sanding, installing blocks in the bottom for added strength, and painting. Finished product looked completely undamaged and saved owner the expense of new custom milled columns.
