Centaurus A, also known as NGC 5128, is a peculiar lenticular galaxy in the constellation Centaurus, which appears to be an elliptical galaxy with a huge superimposed dust lane. It is one of the closest radio galaxies, and its active galactic nucleus has been extensively studied.

Discovery and Identity

NGC 5128 was discovered by James Dunlop on August 4, 1826. John Herschel was next to see it, from South Africa in 1834; he cataloged it as h 3501, which became GC 3525 in his General Catalogue of 1864, and NGC 5128 in J. L. E. Dreyer's New General Catalog. Herschel was first to note this galaxy's peculiarity, in 1847.

Halton Arp included NGC 5128 in his 1966 Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies as one of the best examples of a "disturbed" galaxy with dust absorption.

Amateur Observation

Centaurus A appears approximately 4° north of the naked-eye globular cluster Omega Centauri. At magnitude 7.0, this galaxy is the fifth brightest in the sky, making it ideal for observation, although it is only visible from the southern hemisphere and low northern latitudes. Centaurus A has been spotted with the naked eye by expert observers under very good conditions. The bright central bulge and dark dust lane are visible in finderscopes and large binoculars, and additional structure may be seen in larger telescopes.

NGC 5128 is a "lenticular" galaxy, of intermediate type between elliptical and disk (spiral) galaxies. Its main body has all characteristics of a large elliptical, but a pronounced dust belt is superimposed over the center, forming a disk plane around this galaxy.

The only supernova discovered in Centaurus A so far is SN 1986G, a Type Ia event that reached mag 12.5 in May, 1986.

Properties and Evolution

Centaurus A is located about 11 million light-years away, at the center of one of two subgroups within the Centaurus A/M83 Group. Messier 83 (the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy) is at the center of the other subgroup. These two groups are sometimes identified as one, since the galaxies around Centaurus A and the galaxies around M 83 are physically close to each other, and both subgroups appear to be stationary relative to each other. The Centaurus A/M83 Group is part of the Virgo Supercluster.

NGC 5128's strange morphology is the result of a merger between two smaller galaxies. The bulge of Centaurus A is comprised mainly of evolved red stars. Its dusty disk, however, has been the site of more recent star formation; over 100 star formation regions have been identified in the disk. As observed in other such "starburst" galaxies, a collision is responsible for the intense star formation. Scientists using the Spitzer Space Telescope have confirmed that Centaurus A is an elliptical galaxy going through a collision, devouring a spiral.

In the radio part of the spectrum, Centaurus A exhibits two vast regions of radio emission, running along the polar axis of NGC 5128's disk and extending hundreds of light years in both directions. A relativistic jet from what is believed to be a supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy is responsible for emissions in the X-ray and radio wavelengths. Radio observations of the jet indicate that the inner parts of the jet are moving at about 1/2 the speed of light. X-rays are produced farther out, as the jet collides with surrounding gases, creating highly energetic particles.

Many thanks to all who take the time to view, comment and faved my images. Enjoy the day.

I had the pleasure of seeing this amazingly vivid rainbow appear over Blackfriars Station yesterday afternoon. From my vantage point it was too wide a scene to fit in the viewfinder with the 16-55mm lens on my Fuji X-T2 so I had to let the ultrawide 13mm equivalent lens on my iPhone come to the rescue ...

Our AirBnB host had slipped a page into the guest book saying "My favorite place to stargaze in the desert is a plot of land out in the middle of Wonder Valley. I call it the Star Box. It's far from light pollution and you'll be all alone out there. Venmo $25 for access to the land. I do not take responsibility for nails or glass in tires. Arrive before sunset or you'll never find the place." The tire thing worried us, but we paid up, got the coords, and checked it out in daylight - soft sand road, but seemed fine. It was indeed magical - I hadn't seen a sky this big before - free of obstructions in every direction, ringed by distant mountains all the way around, a totally enveloping experience. I'd expected the temps to drop with nightfall, but a warm wind persisted. We ate pizza and watched the North Star appear, then watched as cosmos lit up. The downside of the location for astro photography is that there were no landmarks, so there's nothing to include (skies with stars and nothing else are boring). But we had fun doing some light painting in the desert while we waited for the full star show. Amazing evening.

This dragonfly appears to be missing half of a wing which may explain why he was reluctant to fly away. It was also very breezy which may be another reason he chose to remain stationary for a long period of time. It's very likely that the dragonfly had a close encounter with a bird that got part of his wing but didn't manage to catch him.

The Rainbow Bridge

A child

Dancing on the path

Above the shore line

Appears not to see the rainbow bridge

Like a miracle

Thrusting out

Across the abyss

To the distant shore

And onwards

To the Sun

Its source

It has appeared so suddenly mysteriously

Out from under the terrible glare

Of the silver -sun's-shimmering

It is blue

Soft - silver

Purple

Revealing

So briefly

The pathway opening to a future

More ephemeral

More magical

Than any rainbow

Ever stationed in the sky.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You did not come again today

As the spring Sun was sinking

Today

No magic

No miracle

Just a golden glow a-shimmering

A Line of light upon the waters

This one I could not ride

Like Merlin's Dragon breath

Into the reality of dreams

This image is a labor of love. Originally begun in 2022 and finally finished this year. It is comprised of images from 2 different telescopes, 2 different cameras, two types of binning, and 9 different exposure lengths. I had no idea how difficult it would be to marry all this data together. Finally, here it is.

Discovered in 1702 by the German astronomer Gottfried Kirch, M5 is one of the oldest globular clusters in the Milky Way galaxy. With an apparent magnitude of 6.7 and a location 25,000 light-years away in the constellation Serpens, M5 appears as a patch of light with a pair of binoculars and is best viewed during May.

A majority of M5’s stars formed more than 12 billion years ago, but there are some unexpected newcomers on the scene, adding some vitality to this aging population.

Stars in globular clusters are believed to form in the same stellar nursery and grow old together. The most massive stars age quickly, exhausting their fuel supply in less than a million years, and end their lives in spectacular supernova explosions. This process should have left the ancient cluster M5 with only old, low-mass stars.

Yet astronomers have spotted many young, blue stars amongst the ancient stars in this cluster. Astronomers think that these laggard youngsters, called blue stragglers, were created either by collisions between stars or other stellar interactions. Such events are easy to imagine in densely populated globular clusters, in which up to a few million stars are tightly packed together. Text from NASA/Goddard

M5 V2 is perhaps slightly better. V2 used a masked stretch, which made the stars smaller but resulted in a clouded overall look. In V3 I decided to go with a more conventional stretch for better clarity.

After 10 days of gloomy weather I expected more of the same on the first day of my weekend, Fri 4.24, however it turned out to be a spectacular day. As luck would have it I had chores to do and wouldn’t be able to get out for any pictures until Saturday. Looking at the weather forecasts it appeared I might be in luck as my weather app was showing another day of clear skies. As it turns out that is exactly what happened. After waking up and finishing up my final chores and did some checking and discovered the south freight out of Fairbanks was running very late. The train was re-crewed at Hurricane, MP 281.4, and had departed at 0830. It was currently 0915 and my goal was to catch the train at MP 206.4 as they emerged from the woods with Denali standing tall in the background. I live in South Anchorage, roughly at MP 105, so I needed to go north 101 miles before the freight traveled the 76 miles south to arrive at the same destination. By the time I left my house it was 0920. It was a calculated risk but I was fairly confident I could beat the train here. I also knew the train had to traverse a few slow orders so that was in my favor. Luck was on my side, but just barely, I arrived at my desired location at 1100 and the train rolled past at 1105. Pretty good timing I say. As this was the only train on the system, I headed for home. Of course that was the same direction the train was heading so I was able to capture a few more shots along the way. This shot shows Denali and Hunter with the train. Earlier I posted a shot with just Denali and the train. I think I like this shot a bit better. At 20’308 tall Denali stands tall and dominates the background.in either view.

Plain Pigeon / Paloma Ceniza (Patagioenas inornata )

Status: Non Common Resident (Residente No Comun)

Near Threatened (Amenazada)

The plain pigeon / Paloma Ceniza (Patagioenas inornata) is a species of bird in the family Columbidae. It is found in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. Its natural habitats are forest, woodland, coastal desert, mangrove and swampy areas. It is threatened by habitat loss.

The plain pigeon is a large-bodied bird (38 cm [15 in]) that superficially resembles the common city pigeon. At a distance it appears pale blue-gray overall. The head, hind-neck, breast, and part of the folded wing are colored with a red-wine wash. When folded, the wing shows a white leading edge; in flight, it forms a conspicuous wing bar. Legs and feet are dark red. The female is slightly smaller and duller than the male. Juveniles are browner overall, with pale wing margins and dark eyes.

Three subspecies of the plain pigeon are recognized: P. i. inornata from Cuba and Hispaniola, P. i. exigua from Jamaica, and P. i. wetmorei from Puerto Rico.

Studies In The Art Of The Slack Key

by Bill Adams

The Waimea Music Exchange store at Parker Center was filled with the beautiful sounds of Hawaiian music this past Saturday morning as a group of students from Cornell University participated in a slack key guitar lesson taught by the Big Island's own Don Kauli'a, whose album "Sweet Wahine" was nominated for a 2008 Grammy Award.

The students are enrolled in Cornell's Earth and Environmental Systems (EES) Field Program. A 5-month course which spans the entire spring semester, students engage in field, class and laboratory studies focused on the various ecosystems of our Hawaiian island chain and of Hawaii's history and culture.

Led by Professor Dr. Alexandra Moore, the EES Field Program is based out of Waimea and hosted by the Hawaii Preparatory Academy. The students' living quarters is the 8-bedroom Waiaka House near the main campus of HPA.

Dr. Moore explained, "The students are immersed in studies geared towards "Kumu Pa'a I Ka 'Aina, which translates to 'Knowledge and understanding that comes from the land.'"

The stated mission of the EES Field Program is "To inspire stewardship of the Earth through first-hand experience with the power, and fragility, of Earth's interconnected systems."

Upon completion of the EES Field Program, students will achieve 18 credit hours from courses such as; Field Study of the Earth System, Biogeochemistry of the Hawaiian Islands, Field Study of Marine Ecosystems, Internship Experience, and an Introduction to Hawaiian History and Culture, which included Saturday's slack key guitar lesson.

The Program stresses the importance of respecting the Hawaiian ancestral lands and to give something back to the community by engaging in a variety of service learning (in class) projects and local volunteer opportunities. Students are also encouraged to explore ways in which they can contribute to the well-being of their adopted community.

Before Saturday's lesson began, the students were able to briefly meet and chat with another famous Big Island slack key guitar master, Sonny Lim, a 2007 Grammy Award winner for his work on the album, "Slack Key Guitar Volume 2".

Participating in Saturday's guitar lessons were a diverse group of five Cornell University students; Hannah Kubica, a junior from Little Falls, New York, Keisuke Irie, a senior from Bergen County, New Jersey, Matt Connelly, a sophomore from Syracuse, New York, Kourtney Reynolds, a senior from San Diego, California and Tyler Huth, a sophomore from Boston, Massachusetts.

More information about Cornell University's EES Field Program can be found on the Internet at www.geo.cornell.edu/hawaii.

The sun appears briefly across the limestone of Feizor. A place with history and atmosphere. It's a wonder this shot happened at all, really. Firstly, getting up for sunrise is still an effort..... The wind was fierce and it had, moments before, blown my camera over, smashed the lens hood and unknown to me, had knocked the camera onto manual focus. So it was luck that this appears to be in focus. A difficult exposure, and the tree was blowing so wildly that it appears to be moving, even in a still! Thanks for the new location Steve!

SN/NC: Crocosmia Lucifer, Iridaceae Family

Crocosmia Lucifer are abundant eye-catching, brillliantly red, tubular flowers appearing in midsummer atop bold, slightly arching, sparsely branched 3-foot-tall stems. Its mid-green leaves are pleated and swordlike. Crocosmia makes excellent cut flowers and attract hummingbirds. Thrives in a warm, south-facing location. Site near a wall where not reliably hardy. Apply a thick layer of mulch in winter. Plants also require well-drained soil. Lift and divide clumps in spring to maintain vigor.

This pair of Canadian Geese appeared to be cautiously scouting for nesting sites by an old unused dock on the lake. What made this unusual was that while I have often seen them in the marsh areas off the lake, I have never seen this species on the main lake at all. Trailblazers, perhaps, tho I doubt it as the marshes provide much more protection from the eagles who regularly scout the lake.

Blooming coltsfoot seen in the forest :)

Looking close... on Friday! - theme: "Flora in March" :)

Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) is a plant in the groundsel tribe in the daisy family Asteraceae, native to Europe and parts of western and central Asia. It is also a common plant in North America and South America where it has been introduced. The flowers, which superficially resemble dandelions, start to bloom in early Spring, before the leaves appear. The leaves of coltsfoot appear after the flowers have set seed and wither and die in the early summer. The plant is often found in waste and disturbed places and along roadsides and paths. In some areas it is considered an invasive species. Coltsfoot has been used in herbal medicine and has been consumed as a food product with some confectionery products. Tussilago farfara leaves have been used in the traditional Austrian medicine internally (as tea or syrup) or externally (directly applied) for treatment of disorders of the respiratory tract, skin, locomotor system, viral infections, flu, colds, fever, rheumatism and gout.

Preferuje gleby gliniaste, miejsca kamieniste, piarżyska, żwirowiska nadrzeczne, osuwiska, skarpy przydrożne, urwiste brzegi rzek i potoków, hałdy węglowe i pogorzeliska.

A Live Oak tree on Silver Palm Drive in Vero Beach extends many of its branches horizontally almost parallel to the ground in defiance of gravity. Sometimes the smaller limbs/branches actually go underground for some distance only to appear again 30-40 feet from the main vertical trunk. On close inspection, one can see as is often the case, a wooden prop to help support the low lying limbs.

The sentence "Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose" was written by Gertrude Stein as part of the 1913 poem "Sacred Emily", which appeared in the 1922 book Geography and Plays.

In that poem, the first "Rose" is the name of a person. Stein later used variations on the sentence in other writings, and the shortened form "A rose is a rose is a rose" is among her most famous quotations, often interpreted as meaning "things are what they are", a statement of the law of identity, "A is A."

Stein once remarked, "Now listen! I'm no fool. I know that in daily life we don't go around saying 'is a ... is a ... is a ...' Yes, I'm no fool; but I think that in that line the rose is red for the first time in English poetry for a hundred years." (Four in America). (Source: Wikipedia).

UNA ROSA ES UNA ROSA ES UNA ROSA... (2024)

No soy tonta. Sé que en la vida diaria no andamos por ahí diciendo 'es una... es una... es una...' Sí, no soy tonta; pero creo que en ese verso la rosa es roja por primera vez en la poesía inglesa en cien años". (Cuatro en América). (Fuente: Wikipedia).

Brace yourselves, this is going to be a long one...

This is Emput (short for Semput, or asthmatic in Malay). Emput is a stray cat that started appearing around my mother in law's apartment block about a year and a half ago. Contrary to all the other cats that linger around the area, we've never seen Emput while he was still a healthy little kitten. Instead, he just came out of nowhere, all sickly and thin. His health is lacking to say the least. He was so thin that when I touched & petted him, I could see that he was barely more than skin & bone. His body and fur was covered in dried scabs & cuts from fights he had with the other neighbourhood cats. How he fared in those fights I can barely think about. In addition, he always breathed in this ragged gasps, his flanks & sides moving up and down erratically. As if he had asthma. That's how he came to be known by me as Emput.

Being a stray, he had no owner & no home to speak of. What he had was an elderly Chinese couple living in the same apartment block who took rudimentary care of him and fed him at least once a day with cat food and boiled fish with rice. What he called home was the entire ground floor of the apartment block. This however, was his favorite spot.

Because of his ill health and because I have always had a soft spot for stray cats, I took a liking to him. I'd always make it a point to stroke & pet him as much as I could whenever I walked by him. I guess I pitied him...when I gave his head & chin a rub, he would roll over and expose his stomach just like house cats do. That's the only time he felt safe & loved like one, I think. In spite of his condition, Emput held on to life for the longest time, like an old hardy soldier. For that, I respected him. I've always had it in mind to do something for him to make him better, like take him to the vet. I made a resolution to myself that I would do so in 2 months time, after Eid. I told him once while I gave him a head rub..."Hold on for 2 more months, okay?". I guess that was too much to ask.

Ever since he appeared, I have always wondered how long he could last. My wondering has ceased...

I went back to my mother in law's house yesterday. Emput was nowhere to be seen. Previously, if I didn't see him anywhere, I would ask my father in law where he was and he'd say "Oh, he was there just now, I saw him"..and then I'd feel at ease. After asking them the same question yesterday, his reply was in the negative. Instead, my father in law told me that there was a new burial mound in the little yard at the back of the apartment block. I should explain...the aforementioned elderly Chinese couple had always took it upon themselves to bury the cats they fed & took care of when they died. They did so by digging up a hole in the yard and later, when the hole was covered, they would put bricks & stones on top so that other scavenging animals can't get to the corpse. Up till recently, I noticed that there were 3 such burial mounds in the yard. Yesterday, I saw there were 4.

In the last couple of weeks, I began to do a strange thing. I began photographing Emput in his daily environment. Whenever I went back to my in law's place, I took one of my cameras along with me, always loaded with film. I photographed Emput as much as I could. Somehow, a part of me already knew that Emput had not long to live, and if no one else took photos of him (like house cats whose pictures were frequently taken by their owners)...then at least I did. If there are no photos of him at all in this whole wide world, then at least there are some in my archives. It's almost like I wanted the photos to be a record, proof that a stray cat called Emput once existed at Block F10, Seksyen 2, Wangsa Maju.

I didn't know it then, but this is the last photo I took of him.

I just wish I had done something for him earlier. Here's a photo of you Emput, published on the this crazy thing called the Innernet where everyone can see you. Turns out, it's the very least I can do for you.

Rest in peace, my friend. May Allah SWT have nicer things in store for you.

The Castril palace (also House of Castril) is a Renaissance style palace located in Sacromonte, a district of the Spanish city of Granada. Nowadays it hosts the Archaeological Museum of Granada.

The house is nailed in the Race of the Darro, in the old Arab district of Ajsaris, seat of 16th century's granadine nobility. The palace is one of the best Renaissance palaces of Granada and belonged to the family of Hernando de Zafra, secretary of Catholic monarchs who participated actively in reconquering it from the Muslim hands during the Reconquista.

At the top of the facade the date of its foundation is recorded: 1539. This work has been attributed to Sebastián de Alcántara, one of the most outstanding disciples of Diego de Siloé. In 1917, the Castril palace was acquired by arabist and orientalist Leopoldo Eguílaz y Yanguas to make it a definitive location of the Archaeological Museum of Granada.

There is also an old legend about the building, dating back to the time when it was inhabited in Arab times, which refers to a mysterious lady in white who appears from time to time, the result of a misunderstanding between the father of a beautiful girl who lived in the building and her supposed lover, which triggered the father's fury and subsequently led to her hanging and walling herself up on the side balcony of the building. On this blind balcony one can read a slogan that reads: "Waiting for heaven's justice", which could refer to "waiting for heaven's justice", probably related to the words that the supposed lover uttered before being hanged.

Appear worryingly scarce locally again this year. At least there might be some for next summer.

This Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) appeared to be sleepwalking across the snow of his enclosure at the Detroit Zoo. I took about 20 pictures of him, and his eyes were closed in all of them. Maybe he was just blocking the intense sunlight reflecting from the snow, or maybe he had walked this route so many times a day, he could do it with eyes closed.

🎄 The Magic of the [WM] Day 22 Mini Dress🎄

(A Holiday Fashion Poem)

"Twas the eve before Christmas, and what should appear,

But a mini dress so enchanting, it brought festive cheer.

The [WM] Day 22 Mini Dress, a delight to behold,

In hues of deep emerald and rich crimson bold.

Its bodice so graceful, with straps that entwine,

A silhouette hugging, both chic and divine.

A skirt trimmed with shimmer, like tinsel aglow,

Spreading the warmth of the holiday snow.

The stockings, mismatched, a merry delight,

One white with red hearts, the other knit bright.

Each tells its own story of holiday glee,

Together they’re perfect, a sight to see!

Your accessories sparkle, with earrings that gleam,

Candy-cane shaped, a sweet Christmas dream.

A choker that twinkles like stars in the night,

And gloves red as holly, completing the sight.

In green fluffy slippers, with bows tied so neat,

You’re ready for parties, where glam and cheer meet.

With a bow in your hair and a smile on your face,

You bring joy to the season with effortless grace.

So slip into this beauty, let your spirit take flight,

Celebrate the holidays in pure WellMade delight!"

An antique Adirondack guide boat appearing through the early morning mist on Blue Mountain Lake in New York’s Adirondack Park. These boats date back to the mid 19th century when city people would pay handsome fees to Adirondack guides who would provide their clients with a wilderness experience and the necessary survival skills of living off the rugged NY State landscape. The ADK guide boats could carry 3 people and enough gear for a full summer in the wilderness. Fast, light, and durable, these boats were an engineering marvel and truly a work of art and craftsmanship. To me, there’s a mystical quality to the early morning hours on the lakes in the Adirondacks, and seeing an antique guide boat materialize out of the mist lent a dreamlike sensation to my morning paddle. I felt out of place, and certainly out of time, sitting there in my plastic kayak, as if I had created a temporary break in the time-space continuum where technologies a century and a half apart collided for a brief instant. I realized that the lake is essentially unchanged since this approaching guide boat was built, so it was I that was the odd man out, a trespasser on a journey through the past.

Today's story and sketch "by me" we are visiting the latest Tiki Oasis, one of many that seem to appear overnight around the Mohave Desert.

I was told they are created by Aliens from the Planet Wikitikki, the same aliens that have been responsible for carving crop circles for hundreds of years.

I was told by our Blog friend Rescue Randy, the most informed and interesting living tissue crash test dummy in the galaxy, also a friend of the Wikitikkians, told Randy they were bored with crop circles, and the fact that not many crops will grow in the Mohave, because of the 140 degree daytime temperatures, and lack of water, they took Randy's suggestion of using their Wikitikki water well technology, and love of their native Wikitikki Palms and tiki's to dig some wells, for the hundreds of the deserts Gypsies, goat herders, Bail jumpers,

disbarred attorneys, off the grid desert dwellers, and retired

mail carriers, and create a few oasis and plant Wikitikki Palms and Tiki's for them to enjoy, which has worked out well for JB and Randy who are taking tourists on very expensive Tiki Tours in JB's Choppers to see the latest Oasis.

Autumn does not appear here in San Diego as it does in much of the norhtern hemisphere. It does, however, make subtle appearances . Some leaves turn colors and drop fro the trees.

In my condo complex berries form on the lantana plants in time for Christmas. This was not the case though for the last two years when there were no berries. This year though I see the little wonders. They are not yet this color but I hope they will be soon. This image is from 2013.
