Appeared at bird feeder during Storm Babet - first for me

More and more the East Berlin "Ampelmännchen" appears also in former West German cities like here Darmstadt.

Ampelmännchen means little traffic light man.

Stairway to Heaven.

Footprints appeared to take you to a lookout in the clouds.

To me, it looked like it could be Heaven's Bench.

I could only wish that heaven had visiting hours.

Dedicated to anyone that may be missing a loved one 💖

Thank-you for all the overwhelming support and many friendships.

Kind regards,

The city appears in the historical record dating back in 1336 by its medieval Greek name Argyrókastro as part of the Byzantine Empire. It first developed in the hill where the Gjirokastër Fortress is located. In this period, Gjirokastër was contested between the Despotate of Epirus and the Albanian clan of Zenebishi under Gjon Zenebishi who made it his capital in 1417. It was taken by the Ottomans in 1418, a year after's Gjon's death and it became the seat of the Sanjak of Albania. Throughout the Ottoman era, Gjirokastër was officially known in Ottoman Turkish as Ergiri and also Ergiri Kasrı. During the Ottoman period conversions to Islam and an influx of Muslim converts from the surrounding countryside made Gjirokastër go from being an overwhelmingly Christian city in the 16th century into one with a large Muslim population by the early 19th century. Gjirokastër also became a major religious centre for Bektashi Sufism.

Taken by the Hellenic Army during the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913, Gjirokastër was eventually incorporated into the newly independent state of Albania in 1913. The local Greek population rebelled and established the short-lived Autonomous Republic of Northern Epirus in 1914 with Gjirokastër as its capital. During the communist period, Gjirokastër was designated a "museum city" due to its architectural heritage.

Gjirokastër is the birthplace of former Albanian communist leader Enver Hoxha.

Several of these goldfinches appeared to be feeding on the flowers of Sweet Alyssum, Lobularia maritima, the flowers seen here. (This species is not common locally and these birds were discovered at this location several days ago.)

These amazing mushrooms appear very late in the year and can be found throughout winter. Freezing does not harm them and they can pick up their growth again once the temperatures are above zero. They are edible, with the cultivated variety known as Enoki. In the wild there are some very similar, but deadly species, though.

My house is built on hallowed ground and land that was reclaimed from the sea. It suits the essence of me and calms my spirit to walk in my garden knowing that it was left for many years, an abandoned place until the house was built and the stony and sandy ground where nothing much grew except ancient plants; wild flowers that blew in on the wind. Then someone planted trees from all four corners of the earth and plants that should not have survived began to flourish as if the roots of these trees breathed new life into the earth. There have been only a few guardians of this magical place and I am honoured to be the current guardian. At first I tried to plant what I liked; tried to enforce my will on this holy place, but in time I realised something … you cannot force a garden to grow; to bend to your will. A garden evolves slowly over time of it's own accord mostly and we, as guardians, should allow it to guide us. In this way I have found peace and happiness here and I embrace the changes of my ever-evolving garden. I seldom buy anything new to plant. I wait for the winds; I wait for the seasons; I witness the changes and I grow and evolve as a person in much the same way as my garden does. It is a joy to anticipate each new season; each new wind; and to see what appears. There is always something unexpected appearing. Life is full of surprises; of serendipitous moments. I wonder sometimes about these old trees. I think whoever planted them was guided and perhaps the garden welcomed the dappled shade on what once was a desert. Certainly I feel myself sometimes directed to introduce a new species. Perhaps I am guided also by a hand that I cannot fathom. We are not meant to understand everything. If we allow ourselves to just be, we may find, without effort, how our path unfolds with relative ease. I have found this to be the case. All those years of struggle and now I can just let go … it really is that easy to be content.

p.s. I was compelled reluctantly to remove a Laburnum tree that I thought might be harmful to my cats. I had always wanted such a tree with it's beautiful yellow flowers … but in it's place a Forsythia grew with a profusion of yellow flowers. I did not plant it! Magic? Yes, I believe so! : 0)

“We leave our footprints in a place to mingle with the echoes of all that went before; our heartbeats; our rhythm; the patterns of our lives.” - AP

I wander in the wilderness

my garden of delights

a jungle by the turquoise sea

a land so flat; the moon at night

shines down with silvery fingers

and touches the ground with magical spells

and come the breaking dawn of morning

all ills are banished and all is well

the dark and mysterious creatures

who loiter in the dusk

emerge in brilliant sunshine

with all-seeing eyes; an elephant tusk

protrudes and scythes the longest grasses

parts the meadow like the ancient sea

leaving behind a trail of crimson

flowers of sorrel and sweet harmony

reigns here as the King of the Jungle

seeks solace in the afternoon siesta

ignores the urban sounds outside

these walls; these trees; a back-firing Fiesta

alerts the songbirds from their idle rest

they flitter and flutter from tree to tree

and as I lie within the striped hammock

I swing and sing low to the sound of the breeze

a mist arises suddenly; springs up from the sea

settles a cloak; an air of mystery

around the shoulders of myself and the limbs

of the ancient trees as I sip my Pimms

I can barely keep my eyes from closing

the warmth of the air so cloying and deep

I find myself falling gently to the humming of bees

as I lapse now into a soundless sleep

I awake to find the blue sky black

lit by a billion diamonds or more

an infinite guide is laid out before me

the wisdom of ancient celestial stars of yore

some say when we see them

they have already died

long ago before our ancestors

what does this imply

do our eyes deceive us

or are we psychic or perhaps

we are more knowledgeable than we realise

all we need falls easily into our laps

but still we often ignore

the instincts that are given

override them; divide them

dilute them; we're driven

to only see clearly to the end of our noses

we fail to stop often to smell the scent of the roses

take stock; stand still

absorb the nature of all living things

for in this garden I discovered

nature brings happiness and happiness brings

peace of mind; plentiful bounty

the sweetest fruits of the earth

the love that will bind us

circumnavigate the world's girth

here I find every day all that I need

the flora; the fauna; all that set seed

and I've no desire to be anywhere else

as much as I desire to be here

in this garden full of Heaven

there is love; there is goodness that I hold dear

from the humblest of creatures

find the beauty in a fly

sing so loud like a blackbird

view the world through a child's eyes.

A couple of views of a young comrorant that was fishing in the rock pools at Maer Rocks Exmouth. It didn't seem worried by me at all.

A large and conspicuous waterbird, the cormorant has an almost primitive appearance with its long neck making it appear reptilian. It is often seen standing with its wings held out to dry. Regarded by some as black, sinister and greedy, cormorants are supreme fishers which can bring them into conflict with anglers and they have been persecuted in the past. The UK holds internationally important wintering numbers.

it appears as if we are going through the bridge (due to the reflections in the water). Also I am in the canoe taking this picture. There are two shadows of the canoe, we are farther to the right, you actually can not see us. There is no bridge underneath us. That to is a reflection in the water. (strange)

Pumpkin Owls appear at the pumpkin festival every year, I think they are very cute and I love them. It's impossible to just walk by without taking a photo. :)

What appears to look like a scene straight out of British Columbia is just Mt Shasta soaring well above the railroad and the conveniently named town of Mt Shasta. This was a shot I knew I wanted with this train, and originally I thought I wasn’t going to get it until I found out the southbound MHKRV I was chasing was only about twenty minutes in front of this grainer. After this I would follow the train until Lakehead before heading home.

HAPPY SLIDERS SUNDAY !!

For the second of two consecutive images of lichen that appear to be rising, I decided to take some of my sliders to the max. The main departures from reality are the highly increased contrast and the bright blue color.

For those curious:

These lichen are growing on the flat top of a low, sunny, cement retaining wall. The wall is about 1 m high and 30cm thick. The lichen grow most densely on the part of the wall-top closest to the street. (bottom of this image). The growth is progressively less dense going from the street side of the wall to where the wall retains soil below a topping of grass. It is my guess that the reason for the diminished growth is because the temperature of the wall decreases from its street side to its soil side. It isn't a direct shade effect. The whole top of the wall gets the same sunlight.

Location: A low retainng wall in front of an old church, Riehen BS Switzerland.

Pancha Island

is an islet that is located at the northeastern tip of Ribadeo, at the mouth of the Eo River. With a limited area, it occupies almost 1 hectare and, although two lighthouses stand on it (one of them painted white and blue, dating from 1860), it is most likely that neither the lighthouse nor the island in general can be accessed due to because it is linked to the coast by a bridge that is closed most of the time. Despite this, it should be noted that the view is much more beautiful from the viewpoint than from the lighthouse.

As soon as we set off along the Faro road (which is signposted as "Estrada do Faro"), an impressive panoramic view of the Ría appears before us, with Figueras and Castropol in the background.

As you walk through Paris and especially in the Montsouris Park, one cannot help but notice the blue busts that appear to be rising from under the surface of the water. This art work is known as ‘Where the Tides Ebb and Flow’ created by Pedro Marzorati, an Argentinian artist.

What is the meaning of the work?

This is a commentary on how the water levels in the earth’s sea bodies continue to rise as a result of climate change. The level of submersion of the various sculptures is an indication of the level of impact that global warming is having in different parts of the world. The sequence in which the sculptures are arranged indicates that as time goes by, the human forms will be completely below the water. The use of blue for the sculptures is deliberate and so is the number of sculptures used. The work shows that poetic activism can be just as effective if not more powerful than verbal advocacy. publicdelivery.org/pedro-marzorati-where-the-tides-ebb-an...

We must act against the destruction of our Planet, the first step is to stop electing ignorant politics who doesn't believe in climate change and who want to see the World burn."

"Gonna suck the juices out of this world

Gonna treat her rough

It's all she deserves

She's so cold to me

Gonna rape this world

With my straight lines

Gonna straighten her out

Because nature is just history

There's a hole in my heart

You're so cruel to me

There's a hole in my heart

From your industry

There's a hole in my heart

It's no use to get involved

You'll never stop the world from turning

I just want to rest in peace

I can't stop the world from burning

Gonna test my bombs wherever I want,

Gonna 'poon the whale

Gonna drain the swamp

It's money to me

Gonna fuck with genes

I am what I am

Much more than a God

Much less than a man of industry

There's a hole in my heart

You're so cruel to me

There's a hole in my heart

From your industry

There's a hole"

A few days ago, the above art work appeared overnight on an outside wall of Reading Prison which has stood empty since it closed at the end of 2013. There was immediate speculation it was the work of the street artist Banksy whose identity has never been confirmed despite the fact his numerous works have appeared at various locations over a long period of years.

The paintings often form a social message and can be controversial. Reading Prison is very much a controversial place – it is owned by the Ministry of Justice who have been trying to dispose of it for the last 7 years. For them one of the problems is the property is designated a grade II listed building which means it cannot be demolished or substantially altered without prior consent from the Local Authority – Reading Borough Council. There have been calls for it to be used as a public amenity such as a theatre or arts facility and a deal to redevelop it has fallen through so in effect there has been little or no progress for 7 years.

Yesterday Banksy confirmed it was his art work although he did not shed any light on who the figure was supposed to be. Much of the local view is that it is a representation of Oscar Wilde, the Victorian actor, writer and poet who was incarcerated there from 1895 to 1897 – probably the prisons main claim to fame.

It is questionable as to whether the painting helps or hinders the current deadlock although it has provided some amusement for local residents in what is otherwise a depressing time!

It appears i have more influence than i thought...

Shortly before sunset. The little cloud almost appears to be tunneling into that big, gray mass.

I got here at 535am and all the lobster boats appeared to be out. There were trails of water on the deck/pier and it appeared that there had been a good bit of recent activity, but i must have missed all the action. Instead i got a quiet, peaceful sunrise

Cracks appear on the surface and, exposed, the fingers of God reach in. Then the light shines and gives meaning to life, and that life rejoices in the knowledge that there is more to this than we first thought. We have meaning and we have purpose.

when this appeared on the pool this afternoon, I assumed it was a 2nd winter bird having a "Bad Hair Day". Do not remember seeing a sinensis race close to before although the book says they are common in UK. normal ones I see are Cormorant - Phalacrocorax carbo. sinensis race are sometimes reffered to as "Continental" & are slightly smaller than carbo

A cousy autumn morning starts with the appearance of mist near the scenes of Suonenjoki. Everything seems to be calm, but loud noises belonging to the empty freight train of Fenniarail echoe around the landscapes as the blue Vectron locomotive appears from the mist while preparing to dive into a nearby tunnel.

Yes, this is my very first pinhole photograph. I am not sure why I am so excited about something that appears to be on such an inferior quality compared to what is possible today but I am anyway. I have started pursuing black and white film again recently and now am trying to see what pinhole photography can offer.

It appears that it will be a decent year for this species along the New England coast as several beaches from New Hampshire to Cape Cod have reported a few birds each.

I've noticed these lovely little fairy houses popping up in random places around our local neighbourhood recently. They are actually hand-painted seashells and are a really sweet and thoughtful touch, especially in these trying days. Happy Window Wednesday!

(Snapped on iPhone SE)

This appeared at the bottom of the wall, where it climbs and sprawls and flowers much earlier than the shrubs, so I wonder whether the prostrate form I lost to the frost might be one of its parents...

Pillows.

They appear to be cute and fluffy but they're true killing machines!

What you see on this picture is a cruel Pillow fight. The loser has to do the washing up tomorrow!

I was photographing the white racemes of the locust tree when i heard a loud buzzing. I looked up to see this ball-o-bees hanging from one of the racemes. A couple of bees broke off to come investigate me, but soon lost interest. They appear to be moving house, and i hope they found a nice new safe space.

Another colorful leader and consist appeared on the Seligman Sub today with an ethanol train from Lawler, IA to Stockton, CA. The train originated at the Homeland Energy Solutions plant and was handed off from the CPKC to the BNSF at Kansas City. BNSF is running it as the U-CLHEES7-30A with 98 loads at 5832' and 13,582 tons. Here the CSXT 3424 and 249, and KCSM 4515 have them climbing out of the sag at Bootlegger and into the curve under the San Francisco Peaks. Looking back over the train, one will see 2 BNSF mid-train DP's providing another 8800hp. The entire scene should be under the cover of snow, but the warm winter has prevented any moisture from staying in place except for at the extreme elevations of northern Arizona.

This coyote appeared to be a youth. He passed through the field where I was birding this morning, its fur is a bit damp from the dew. It gave me the side glance a few times as it passed through the field. Don't worry, pup. Godspeed on your hunt. (But please don't get any cool birds 😜).

Earlier this week I visited the National Zoo in Washington, DC; I had not been in several years. I strongly prefer photographing birds/animals in a natural setting, but I wanted to check out their recently opened "Bird House" and the zoo in general. The best I could tell, all of the birds in the Bird House were local species that a dedicated birder could see here in the area. I only saw a couple species I've not photographed elsewhere. Additionally, outside they have some larger exotic species not native to this area. I'll post a few shots in my Photostream and put the rest in a dedicated album for anyone wanting to see more of what to expect at the zoo.

For the record, the zoo appears to be very well managed and would be a delight for most. They get about 2-million visitors a year. You can read more about the Bird House here: nationalzoo.si.edu/news/bird-house-reopens-smithsonians-n...

A coast live oak appears to cup the Sun within it's long branches like a bowl of hot soup.

It's basically having lunch. The oak tree takes in carbon dioxide and water molecules and makes food with the Sun. The energy from sunlight causes a chemical reaction to break down the molecules of carbon dioxide and water and reorganizes them to make the sugar (glucose) and oxygen gas. The oxygen is released from the same tiny holes through which the carbon dioxide entered.

It was a -3 degree cold morning. In the park, Robin always appears suddenly, sometimes on the ground, sometimes on the walls and tree branches, standing and showing himself.

That's why it's hard not to press the shutter button when I see my favourite only 16 - 22g little bird.

I hope you enjoy the photographs as much as I enjoyed taking them.

Britain’s favourite bird 'European Robin' redbreast - Yes, the robin is, without doubt, one of our favourite garden birds. Robins are good at coping with cold and snow, but far northern Europe can still be a bit too much in winter. A robin's lifespan is just 13 months on average due to high mortality among robins in their first year. Once they've passed that barrier, they stand a much better chance of surviving for quite a while the record currently stands at 13-19 years. Robins are very territorial birds and will viciously attack other robins that on their patch. A dispute starts with males singing at each other, trying to get a higher perch in order to show off their breast most effectively. This usually ends the challenge, with one individual deferring to the other.

Why does a robin puff up?

On cool spring mornings and chilly days, robins puff out their feathers – called rousing – to stay warm. It fluffs air into the bird's down feathers, giving some insulation to help the robin maintain its body temperature.

Do robins puff themselves up?

Male robins will always attack any intruder into their space, occasionally – though fortunately not often – fighting to the death. Both sexes of robins have red breasts and both puff out their chests as a sign of aggression.

Here are some fun facts about Robins, the nations favourite garden bird.

Robins are very territorial and you'll usually only see 2 together when they're mating.

In fact, they're so territorial that they often fight to the death defending their area.

They are very loyal to their food sources. The Robin you see in your garden is most likely the same one each time.

Young Robins do not have red breasts. They are brown and lightly speckled, only growing their red feathers after their first moult.

Its nearly impossible to tell apart the male and female Robin by sight.

They are ground feeding, insectivorous birds; mostly feeding on worms and insects found in freshly turned soil (as well as fruit).

Females often eat the shells of their hatched young for an extra boost of calcium.

Robins (both male and female) have such driven parental instincts that they have been found to feed the chicks of other species.

Cairns appear as alien relics on the barren landscape at the summit of Mount Washington, in the Mount Washington State Park in New Hampshire. These act as trail markers above the tree line. They are placed close together so that it's possible to find the next one along the trail in the often-dense clouds or snow that cover the summit. These examples mark the path of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail just as it approaches the summit of the mountain near Yankee House and radio towers from the west.
