****This frame was chosen on March 28th 2014 to appear on FLICKR EXPLORE (Highest Ranking: #155. This is my Twenty third photograph to be selected, which I am amazed and delighted by as I never view my images as worthy compared to some of the amazing photography out there. EXPLORE is Flickr's way of showcasing the most interesting photos within a given point in time -- usually over a 24 hour period.

Flickr receives about 6,000 uploads every minute -- That's about 8.6 million photos a day! From this huge group of images, the Flickr Interestingness algorithm chooses only 500 images to showcase for each 24-hour period. That's only one image in every 17,000!..... so I am really thrilled to have a frame picked and most grateful to everyone who visited, favourite and commented on the frame*****

Photograph taken in the height of a foggy golden hour around sunrise at 05:42am on Thursday 27th March 2014 in the grounds of Foots Cray Meadows. Here I am standing beside Five Arches Bridge over the River Cray in Bexley, Kent, England.

An early start and aborted destination due to very thick fog, which had me rerouting over to the lake in the hope of capturing the beauty and atmosphere of the morning.

Appearing within the boundless darkness of space in this NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope snapshot, NGC 34 looks more like an otherworldly, bioluminescent creature from the deep oceans than a galaxy. Lying in the constellation Cetus (the Sea Monster), the galaxy’s outer region appears almost translucent, pinpricked with stars and strange wispy tendrils.

The main cause for this galaxy’s odd appearance lies in its past. If we were able to reverse time by a few million years, we would see two beautiful spiral galaxies on a direct collision course. When these galaxies collided into one another, their intricate patterns and spiral arms were permanently disturbed. This image shows the galaxy's bright center, a result of this merging event that has created a burst of new star formation and lit up the surrounding gas. As the galaxies continue to intertwine and become one, NGC 34’s shape will become more like that of a peculiar galaxy, devoid of any distinct shape.

In the vastness of space, collisions between galaxies are quite rare events, but they can be numerous in mega-clusters containing hundreds or even thousands of galaxies.

The Portuguese Railway network appears to be undergoing a renaissance at the moment. Carriages from the 1950s onwards have been dragged out of storage lines, overhauled and put back into service along the Douro Valley, hauled by vintage EE diesel locos. Another line to Valencia has been electrified and some services are hauled by reactivated 2600 electric locos hauling overhauled ex RENFE stock. All of this costs less and can be implemented far faster than buying the latest multiple unit from manufacturers in Europe. Long may it continue!

The highlight of the renaissance though has to be the reactivation of two MLW MX620 locos, one of which is seen here at Covilha on 8th November 2022 with a PTG Charter to Entroncamento.

Aruba, a small island in the Dutch Caribbean off the coast of Venezuela, has a dry climate, sunny beaches and gentle waves. Constant winds produce a cool breeze and tilt trees (like the famous divi-divi) to the southwest. The European influence appears in the architecture, characterized by the Dutch gables painted in tropical pastel tones. This is also evident in the coexistence of the local language, Papiamento, with English, Dutch and Spanish. The country does not have fresh water but it has desalinated water of excellent quality and you can safely drink tap water. The small country is a major producer and exporter of aloe vera (aloe vera) and is strong in the financial and fishing sectors, in addition to logistical services in the oil sector. It is a small island with a lot of sun and wind all the time, which favors the country's main economic activity, tourism. Its area is 179 km2 (69.1 mi2) and is densely populated by approximately 110,000 inhabitants (2020 Census) and has a per capita income of just over US$25,000 p.a. The country's capital is Oranjestad.

The city of Turenum appears for the first time in the Tabula Peutingeriana, a 13th-century copy of an ancient Roman itinerary. The name, also spelled Tirenum, was that of the Greek hero Diomedes. The city was later occupied by the Lombards and the Byzantines. First certain news of an urban settlement in Trani, however, trace back only to the 9th century.

The most flourishing age of Trani was the 11th century, when it became an episcopal see in place of Canosa, destroyed by the Saracens. Its port, well placed for the Crusades, then developed greatly, becoming the most important on the Adriatic Sea. In the year 1063 Trani issued the Ordinamenta et consuetudo maris, which is "the oldest surviving maritime law code of the Latin West". There was also Jewish community in Trani, which was under the protection of the king until it was given to the Archbishop Samarus during the reign of Henry VI at the end of the 12th century. In that period many great families from the main Italian Maritime Republics (Amalfi, Pisa, Genova and Venice) established themselves in Trani. Trani, in turn, maintained a consul in Venice from 12th century. The presence of other consulates in many northern Europe centres, even in England and Netherlands, shows Trani's trading and political importance in the Middle Ages. Emperor Frederick II built a massive castle in Trani. Under his rule, in the early 13th century, the city reached its highest point of wealth and prosperity.

A rather large hole has appeared at Lichfield, known as the Streethay Cutting. This is where HS2 will burrow under the Trent Valley Line, and beyond, the A38 and South Staffordshire Line to Wichnor Junction also, before continuing to Handsacre where HS2 will join the Trent Valley Line. HS2 was originally planned to soar over these obstacles on a viaduct, but local consultation (opposition) resulted in the new alignment being approved. It appears that the large boulders in Ferguson Canyon tend to hold back all the most brilliant-colored sediment deposits whenever there is high water. The water there almost looks golden.

These males appear plentiful only in the early breeding season. For unknown reasons mainly the females appear at our created bird oasis later in the season. At this time of year, however, both sexes compete with our many Woodpecker species up here to carb up from the suet feeders. Most of the smaller birds simply yield to the aggressive Woodpeckers. This one has dropped down to the pool for a drink or bath and conveniently perched on the rim of the fountain.

Bosnia and Herzegovina often known informally as Bosnia, is a country in Southeast Europe, located within the Balkans. Sarajevo is the capital and largest city. Bosnia is not entirely a landlocked country as it may appear on a map – to the south it has a narrow coast on the Adriatic Sea long and surrounds the town of Neum. Many people still associate the country with the break-up of Yugoslavia in the heartbreaking civil war of the 1990's. The scars from that time are all still visible. But today's tourist are likely to remember the country for its friendly, modest and warm people. The country has turned into an exciting and versatile travel destination, with beautiful mountains, numerous medieval castle ruins, seven major rivers, impressive waterfalls. Overall, nearly 50% of Bosnia is forested. A country where Eastern and Western civilizations have met over the centuries. Today integration into the European Union is one of the main political objectives of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The local currency is the Bosnian mark. The euro is also accepted. Islam is the majority faith in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also Orthodox Christianity, and Roman Catholicism are all present. The wild and unspoilt nature makes it an ideal place for both adventurers and nature lovers. Koćuša waterfall is situated in Veljaci village and it's one of the most beautiful nature pearls of this part of Herzegovina.

Koćuša Waterfall impresses firstly because of its length. It is more than fifty meters wide, which with five meters of height slopes, makes an imposing water slide. But numbers can’t describe you the real feel when you stand in front of it. Trebižat River is full of waterfalls. Actually, this river has 9 different names, and it changes them through its course. Before this waterfall the river is called Mlade and after it the river becomes Trebižat. On high temperatures, waterfall Koćuša is an ideal place for a rest and pleasant atmosphere. Beside waterfall, numerous visitors can be thrilled with ambundant wildlife of this untouched nature. Ducks enjoying the fresh water of the waterfall. The beautiful demoiselle is a European damselfly. It is often found along fast-flowing waters where it is most at home. Male demoiselle have a blue color.

"By being seldom seen, I could not stir

But like a comet I was wondered at". ― William Shakespeare; 'King Henry IV Part 1: Third Series'.

“It was a comet. The boy saw the comet and he felt as though his life had meaning. And when it went away, he waited his entire life for it to come back to him. It was more than just a comet because of what it brought to his life: direction, beauty, meaning. There are many who couldn't understand, and sometimes he walked among them. But even in his darkest hours, he knew in his heart that someday it would return to him, and his world would be whole again... And his belief in God and love and art would be re-awakened in his heart. The boy saw the comet and suddenly his life had meaning.” ― Lucas Scott; 'One Tree Hill'.

In my head, in my neck, in my chest, in my waist, in my butt

I still beg

Please help me

When I was a child

I threw with dung as I fought

As a child

I killed all thugs and bored with a bough

In their spiracle

Morning appears on the backwaters of Kerala. It is still and magical. It is calm and mystical. The lily pads shine and the water glimmers as it moves in little waves. We all must find time in our lives to find moments in nature like this! They rejuvenate the soul!

Norfolk Southern appears to have won the contract to operate the MBTA in this fantasy world that you'd scoff at for being not prototypical were you to see it on someone's model railroad! But there truly is a prototype for everything if you look hard enough or wait long enough.

Obviously this is not true because NS seems to barely want to be in the freights business these days let alone passenger! But, despite it's a absurdity this photo is very much real. NS 7564 (GE ES40DC blt. Feb. 2006) is sitting on the 'Conrail westbound' track on top of a string of long term hold coaches outside the MBTA Commuter Rail Maintenance Facility better known as BET (Boston Engine Terminal). The big GE has been sitting around for three weeks after arriving on a rail train as seen in this photo: flic.kr/p/2mjgDqx

With the rail train finally empty the 5 AM work train crew is getting ready to take their pair of MBTA units and double to the 7564 and then go pick up the empty rail train. They will deliver all of this back to Pan Am in Lowell and leave the NS unit with it to hold the air and ultimately head back home finally after taking up space and doing nothing in Boston for weeks.

Leaving the hut before sunrise and reaching the upper plateau, you can see the Hakuba Mountains behind you and clouds rising from the valleys between the maples, creating a sea of clouds.

This is the world of an altitude of 2000m.

The weather in the mountains is changeable, and even on sunny days, clouds often appear in the afternoon and hide the mountains.

**** This frame was chosen on September 28th 2018 to appear on FLICKR EXPLORE (Highest Ranking: #285. This is my 108th photograph to be selected, which for me is both amazing and exciting, as I never view my images as worthy compared to some of the awesome photography out there.

That's only one image in every 17,000!..... so I am really thrilled to have a frame picked and most grateful to every one of the 17.950 Million people who have visited, favourite and commented on this and all of my other photographs here on my FLICKR site. *****

Another shot from the wind swept area above Port Levy on Canterbury's Banks Peninsula. This track appears to still have vehicle use by the lease farmer or hunters maybe, certainly has walkers heading that way but doubt they make the wheel tracks :-).

I met a traveller from an antique land...

...And on the pedestal these words appear:

"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:

Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay

Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare

The lone and level sands stretch far away.

It appears the train crew as well as the kayaker are oblivious to one another as each go about their respective duties. GSMR 1009 rolls along the Tuckasegee River as they near the depot at Bryson City, NC. This train held a surprise for me on the rear. More on that in my next photo.
