1. Larger size - A minute earlier I observed this larger Appalachian Tiger Swallowtail (ATS) in a puddle party with a smaller Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (ETS).
2. Sub-marginal yellow band on ventral forewing is mostly continuous yellow. The yellow dashes almost merge to form a continuous band.
3. Black lines/black edging on ventral hindwing is almost straight, not scalloped. Junctions of yellow and black fields relatively straight. Blue band is brighter and wider.
4. Yellow-orange spots along outer edge of ventral hindwing more rectangular than crescent-shaped.
5. Date/flight period (single-brooded), habitat, known location for the species, fresh condition. See habitat / location below.
6. Hindwing appears elongated.

Appalachian Trail station on Metro North's Harlem Line. Hikers can get a train to/from Grand Central Station in NYC. Trains stop at Appalachian Trail on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays only and is the only train station along the 2,175 mile length of the Appalachian trail. It is 65.9 miles (106 km) from Grand Central Terminal and travel time to Grand Central is approximately one hour, 52 minutes.
From here, rail service continues approximately 17 miles further north, terminating at Wassaic NY.
This line was originally the New York Central's Chatham Branch.
The only thing ruining this moment right now is the echoing of gunshots (hunters) arising from the valley behind me.
The trail in this location crosses the summit of Unaka Mountain. On this day low hanging clouds gave the place a nice atmosphere.
This last summer I found myself quite taken with trying to shoot as many butterflies as I could find. We made several trips to butterfly houses, and we had a great trip to Cades Cove in the Smokys where we found a large number of species in abundance. I shot this beauty on a creek bank in Cherokee, NC., when we stopped for an Ice Cream. I have about 50 shots that came out pretty good, so if you see alot of them in the near future you'll know why.
Perspective
Camera pointed west from Range View Overlook on Mount Marshall. Range View Overlook is a scenic overlook along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park.
Landscape
The layers of bands visible in the photo, from bottom to top, are as follows:
1. Black foreground with trees = Mount Marshall
2. Dark gray mountain ridge just beyond the foreground = Matthews Arm
3 & 4. Next two medium-gray ridges = Massanutten Mountain
5. Light gray layer just before the sky = North Mountain
6. Sky
Massanutten Mountain and North Mountain are ridges of the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians. North Mountain is part of the Allegheny Mountains, and marks the border between Virginia and West Virginia.

The Appalachian Trail as it cuts through Putnam County, NY. It looks like this area was once part of an old mine train railbed.
Soundtrack: The Verve - Appalachian Springs
Does anybody know where we really gonna go
I was wondering if it`s god damned beautiful
you know the thing we cannot trade, forever wrong
(repeat)
solitude, my secret mood, Appalachian springs
on my things
Take a step to the left
Take a step to the right
i saw myself
and it wasn`t quite right
Does anybody know where we really gonna go
i was looking for answers in the sun
And the feelings that a man can`t control
and if the fire burn bright
In the deadly night
………………..
I said that I would never be on their side
Take a step to the left, take a step to the right
and i saw myself(and i give it to…)
and it wasn`t quite right
(repeat)
And i was waiting for ……..
Like a ….. calling, singing in the sun
You said ‘ i remember ‘69′
I said ‘ok’
Solitude, my secret mood, appalachian springs
on my things
Take a step to the left
take a step to the right
i`m gonna keep it together
(repeat)
