45 years ago this week, Bill Anders snapped this first photo of Earth taken by humans.

As Apollo 8 entered lunar orbit and they came around from the farside, this was their view. Through a bold decision by NASA to beat the Russians to the Moon, Bill Anders, Jim Lovell and Frank Borman were the first humans to orbit the Moon. It was such a momentous and emotional event, during a time of chaos in U.S. society, they were moved to recite from "Genesis". Perhaps the greatest Christmas present given to mankind, watching that live on Dec. 24.

Recently data was compiled from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and re-created the view as they would have seen it.

Is this a real space capsule? No, this is a replica of the Apollo 8 command module, which is currently on exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. This model replicates the exact size and shape of the module and its new lunar module docking assembly, as well as the pattern and width of the reflective silver insulating tape. Since most of the actual module's silver tape burned off during re-entry, this replica reproduces the appearance of the module on Christmas Eve 1968.

"...good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas, and God bless all of you -- all of you on the good Earth."

That's how the greeting on Christmas eve ended forty years ago tonight.

That was 1968.

That was the year a black Minister was murdered for the sin of preaching peace and the brother of a fallen president was killed while trying to attain that same lofty office.

The war in Southeast Asia was peaking with the deaths of thousands on the holiday of Tet and Soviet tanks were invading Prague.

That was quite a year...

But this night, forty years ago, everyone stopped...and looked up...

...and listened to the words of three little human beings...

...and for that brief moment we were all one people, the people of Earth.

Thank you Apollo 8 for reminding us just how special the world can be.

Lunar Module Pilot was the official title used for the third pilot position in Block II missions,

regardless of whether the LM spacecraft was present or not.

The Apollo 8 crew stands in the doorway of a recovery helicopter after arriving aboard the carrier U.S.S. Yorktown, recovery vessel for the historic initial manned lunar orbital mission. In left foreground is astronaut Frank Borman, Mission Commander. Behind Borman is astronaut James A. Lovell Jr., Command Module pilot; and on the right is astronaut William A. Anders, Lunar Module pilot. Apollo 8 splashed down at 10:51 a.m. (EST), December 27, 1968, in the central Pacific Ocean, approximately 1,000 miles south-southwest of Hawaii.

To beat the Soviets to the moon, NASA changed Apollo 8's mission from orbiting the earth to orbiting the moon. They launched on December 21st and made this telecast from around the moon on Christmas Eve.

On a photography note, Apollo 8 was the first mission where a photo of the whole earth was able to be taken. The most famous was Earth Rise
